PlayStation Launches Online Store For PS4 Consoles, Accessories, And More

PS4 owners are used to buying digital games directly from PlayStation, but now Sony wants you to come to PlayStation for all your PS4 needs. Today, the company launched its own online store where you’ll be able to buy PS4 consoles, accessories, and more. So far, it’s exclusive to fans in the United States.

The PlayStation Store will sell PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim consoles, DualShock 4 controllers, PlayStation VR headsets and accessories, and console bundles, in addition to physical games and PlayStation Plus subscriptions. The collection of games available will be expanded over time, but you can currently pick up some of PS4’s best games including:

  • Astro Bot: Rescue Mission
  • Blood & Truth
  • Bloodborne
  • Days Gone
  • God of War 3 Remastered
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition
  • MLB The Show 19
  • Quantic Dream Collection
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

If you’re a PlayStation Plus member, you’ll be eligible for free one-day express shipping, which is a nice perk.

There’s also a limited-time promotion available now through October 31: You can get a PS4 Slim and 12-month PS Plus subscription for $340 and a PS4 Pro bundled with PS Plus for $430. But before you take advantage of either offer, check out our roundup of the best PS4 deals this month, as the same PS4 Pro with PS Plus bundle is available for $380 at Newegg right now. You can also get a PS4 Slim for $240 at Google Express–even if you picked up a full-price PS Plus subscription on top of that, it’d still be cheaper than this bundle at the PlayStation Store.

The timing is certainly conspicuous, coming on the heels of its release date announcement for The Last of Us Part 2, which will launch exclusively on PS4 in February. Anticipation is also building for the next-generation PlayStation console, which Sony will now be able to sell directly from the PlayStation online store. Since the Xbox Store has long sold consoles, accessories, and other Xbox gear directly to gamers, it was only a matter of time before PlayStation moved in this direction as well.

Destiny 2 Pre-Loading Now On Steam, Even For Free Players

Destiny 2‘s break with Activision also means a break with its Battle.net launcher, so the game is finally coming to Steam. The release will accompany the launch of the Shadowkeep expansion on October 1, but in the meantime you can get your dropship ready by pre-loading the game now on PC.

Bungie announced the pre-loading on Twitter and said to stay tuned for more info on exact launch info. The game’s community manager added that you need to do a fresh install even if you already have the game on Battle.net, so you should make a new directory and don’t copy over any of the files.

Destiny 2 will also be free-to-play with its New Light version, so you can download the game on Steam for free even if you’re brand new to it. You can even pre-load the F2P version. If you already own additional content, that will migrate over too. Transferring to Steam requires a few extra steps, so read up on our tips for getting ready for Shadowkeep’s release for more on what you should be doing over the next week to prepare.

Shadowkeep is the latest big expansion to Destiny 2 since Forsaken, and includes a new loot crafting system, some new story threads to follow, and a ton of new features.

Is There Finally A Game That Feels Like Doctor Who?

Doctor Who is a mainstream phenomenon in the UK and a cult hit around the world. It’s enjoyed by millions of people every year when it airs on our TV screens and is one of the BBC’s biggest franchises. Yet, despite its sizeable audience, no Doctor Who game has ever really made a mark.

That’s not for the lack of trying: Sumo Digital’s Doctor Who: The Adventure Games was a valiant effort but was released and quietly canceled without barely a murmur. Supermassive’s attempt, The Eternity Clock trilogy, was canceled after just one installment. Worlds in Time, an MMORPG, was shut down just two years after its launch. There’s a pattern emerging, isn’t there?

All this means I went into a preview build of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time feeling a little apprehensive, desperately wanting a great game that did justice to the show I love so dearly, but not really thinking it would do so. And I’m pleased to report that, while it is flawed, Edge of Time is finally a Doctor Who game that, well, feels like Doctor Who.

It’s a VR title in which you play a friend of The Doctor–who, incidentally, features the likeness and voice of Jodie Whittaker. The style of play changes dramatically from level to level: one mission I played was a horror-themed trudge through an alien forest planet filled with creepy glowy-eyed creatures, while the next section was pure puzzle game based around lasers and light refraction. Later levels, I was told, include a more action/shooter-focused segment in which you control a Dalek shell and a separate encounter with the Weeping Angels, though I didn’t get to play these.

The highlight, however, was piloting the TARDIS. It may have, in reality, been a simple memory puzzle to get the engines whirring away, but there was something very special about stepping inside the Doctor’s iconic ship and pressing its buttons and twisting its knobs (whatever it is they do). It was a moment that reminded me of the power of VR–that if you can suspend your disbelief, you really can get lost in other worlds.

That’s not to say The Edge of Time is perfect–visually, as with many VR games, it leaves much to be desired. And as fun to wield the Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver is, it doesn’t allow as much interaction with the game world as I’d like. It can unlock some predesignated doors, for example, but not every door like it would in the show.

In a strange way, however, these issues give Edge of Time a low-budget feel that helps it match the quirky and endearing approach Doctor Who made its name on. Yes, there’s a visual glitch here and there, but the series was once famed for its continuity errors and flimsy sets–it’s part of the charm. What’s more British than trying to be dramatic and just falling short?

Doctor Who: The Edge of Time is “coming soon” for PSVR, Oculus, and HTC Vive.

Mario Kart Tour Is Out Now But You Can’t Play It

Nintendo’s next major mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, is officially available right now–but there is a catch. While the game can be downloaded on iOS and Google Play, it’s not playable just yet.

The game is currently undergoing maintenance ahead of its official launch. The game should, it seems, become playable in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 25.

Mario Kart Tour is the first official Mario Kart game for mobile devices. It is among Nintendo’s most recognisable and popular franchises, and therefore it stands to be a huge hit given its mass appeal.

The game is “free-to-start,” but players can spend more money on microtransactions to unlock various extras. The game features a number of real-world locations for courses, in addition to a variety of courses from throughout the series’ history; we’ve gotten glimpses at Rainbow Road and Choco Island from the SNES game, as well as Dino Dino Jungle from Double Dash. The game also features 30 racers, who you’ll be able to unlock via a gacha mechanic.

Mario Kart Tour is free to download and features microtransactions. To play the game, you’ll need to have a Nintendo Account. You can create one of those for free on Nintendo’s website. For more details on Mario Kart Tour and its first event, check out the video above.

Top 10 Best-Selling PS4 Games And Exclusives Of All Time (US Only)

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is the best-selling console this generation with more than 100 million units shipped, but what are the platform’s best-selling games?

NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella released a list of the top 10 best-selling PS4 games and exclusives, and, just like on Xbox One, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V is No. 1 on the “all games” chart for dollar sales (physical and digital) through August 2019 in the USA.

Rockstar’s newest game, Red Dead Redemption II, is No. 2 on the list, with Call of Duty titles making up the rest of the top five. In total, Call of Duty games represented four of the top 10 titles.

Sony’s own Spider-Man game was No. 6, which is an impressive result given it is ahead of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (though that game did perform worse than expected). Another Sony-made game, God of War, landed at No. 8. By comparison, no first-party Microsoft games made the Top 10 list for Xbox One.

Moving to exclusives, Spider-Man was the top-seller, with God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Bloodborne rounding out the Top 5. You can see the full Top 10 list below.

In other news, Sony held its latest State of Play event today where it showed off a stunning new trailer for The Last of Us: Part II and confirmed a release date for February 2020.

Top 10 Best-Selling Xbox One Games And Exclusives Of All Time (US Only)

The Xbox One launched in 2013, and it’s coming up on a new phase of its life with Microsoft’s next-generation console, Project Scarlett, scheduled for release in Holiday 2020. Looking back on the Xbox One generation, we know now what the console’s best-selling games are, including exclusives.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella shared the Top 10 lists for All Games and Exclusives today in celebration of the Inside Xbox stream. The lists contain few, if any, surprises.

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V is the overall best-selling game for Xbox One through August 2019, with Call of Duty titles and another Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption II, rounding out the Top 5. In fact, Call of Duty games account for five of the top 10 best sellers. Also of note is that every title in the top 10 is a sequel of some kind and that no Microsoft-published exclusive is on the chart.

In terms of Xbox One exclusives, which includes PC, Halo topped the charts. Halo 5: Guardians is No. 1, with Halo: The Master Chief Collection sitting at No. 2. Sea of Thieves (No. 7) is the only new IP on the chart. Sunset Overdrive, which was released in 2014, did not make the chart.

You can have a peek at the charts below. Note, again, that these charts are US only and represent sales of physical and digital (in some cases) based on dollar sales instead of unit sales.

Microsoft’s latest exclusive, Gears 5, launched in September. It launched like a rocket, quickly becoming Microsoft’s biggest launch week for a first-party game in the Xbox One generation.

Looking to 2020, Project Scarlett’s release is scheduled for Holiday 2020 with Halo: Infinite as a launch title. The new system doesn’t replace Xbox One entirely, as Microsoft will continue to support that system. Additionally, Xbox One games (as well as Xbox 360 and OG Xbox games) will work on Project Scarlett through an ambitious backwards compatibility program.

NHL 20 Cover Star Under Investigation For Disorderly Conduct

NHL 20‘s cover star, Auston Matthews, is facing a police investigation for disorderly conduct. ESPN reports that Matthews, the 22-year-old center for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been charged with disruptive behavior or fighting in an incident that took place in Scottsdale, Arizona back in May.

ESPN’s report has all the details:

“According to multiple reports that cited the police report, a woman was sitting inside her car outside the condo building where Matthews lives when she was disturbed by the sound of someone trying to jump in her door. She allegedly got out of her car and confronted Matthews, who she said was intoxicated. According to multiple reports, as Matthews walked away, he ‘pulled his pants down, bent over and grabbed his butt cheeks,’ though he kept on his underwear.”

Matthews is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial conference this Wednesday, September 25.

The Maple Leafs released a statement on Matthews, which said the organization is “aware of the complaint.” Matthews is reportedly cooperating fully with authorities, but Matthews and the Leafs declined to share any more details “out of respect for the process involved.”

Matthews is one of the NHL’s best players, which is why EA put him on the cover of its latest NHL game. Just this year, Matthews–the No. 1 draft pick in 2016–inked a massive $58 million contract with the Leafs.

This is just the latest round of controversy to surround an NHL video game cover star. EA removed Patrick Kane from the cover of NHL 16 amid a police investigation into him for sexual assault. The local District Attorney’s office decided to not pursue criminal charges against Kane.

GameSpot has contacted EA Sports in an attempt to get more details on the company’s response to the investigation into Matthews. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

The Leafs begin their 2019 season on October 2 in a match-up against the Ottawa Senators.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare’s 100-Player Modes Should Be Available At Launch

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is already confirmed to feature the franchise’s biggest multiplayer mode ever with its 64-player Ground War. As suspected, the military shooter may offer multiplayer modes that are even bigger in scale.

In a press release, Activision said the previously discussed 100-player modes may be available at launch. “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer is expected to support up to 100 players in select multiplayer experiences upon launch on October 25,” Activision said.

The wording here is important. The release specifically mentions “select multiplayer experiences” plural, which suggests there may be more than one 100-player mode. Additionally, the line mentions that these modes, whatever they are, are “expected”–but not confirmed–to be available upon release.

In August, Infinity Ward’s Joel Emslie told GameSpot that Modern Warfare is capable of supporting more than 100 players, though he didn’t have any more information to share at the time. It remains to be seen if the 100-player mode(s) will be battle royale or something else entirely.

2018’s Call of Duty game, Black Ops 4, features a battle royale mode called Blackout. Just this week, the mode introduced huge tanks to crank up the action.

Modern Warfare, which is a reboot of the 2007 game of the same name, launches on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In a big change for the series, post-release DLC maps are free. Not only that, but the game supports cross-play and cross-saves. Just recently, it was also confirmed that PS4 players will have exclusive access to the Survival mode in Spec Ops.

The game launches with a huge amount of hype behind it, as the Modern Warfare beta was the franchise’s biggest ever in terms of total number of players and hours spent in the game.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta Set A New Franchise Record

The recently concluded Call of Duty: Modern Warfare beta test has set multiple new franchise records for a Call of Duty beta. According to Activision, it was the “largest [beta] in Call of Duty history.”

Some of its achievements included:

  • Highest total number of users
  • Highest number of hours played
  • Highest peak concurrent number for PS4, Xbox One, and PC combined

Activision said “millions” of people played the beta. The pre-release test was held over multiple weekends in September, beginning on PS4 before coming to Xbox One and PC. Those who pre-ordered the game were invited in first, before Activision opened the beta to everyone.

The second weekend’s beta test was a big one, as it introduced the 64-player Ground War mode and cross-play support that allowed people on different platforms to play together. Additionally, it was discovered that Modern Warfare supports cross-saves between competing systems, so you can play on PS4 and move to Xbox One (or PC) and keep your progression and levels intact.

Infinity Ward boss Patrick Kelly said in a statement that Modern Warfare beta gave the studio “important data and feedback” to help improve the game at launch on October 25.

Activision’s statement went on to reiterate that Modern Warfare’s multiplayer may introduce a mode or multiple modes that support up to 100 players, though whether or not this will be a battle royale mode remains to be seen.

Modern Warfare was co-developed by Beenox, High Moon Studios, and Raven Software. Additionally, it appears Call of Duty: WWII developer Sledgehammer’s new Melbourne, Australia studio contributed to the engineering work that made Modern Warfare’s Ground War mode possible.
