New Borderlands 3 Launch Trailer Is Ready For Mayhem

Borderlands 3 shoots onto PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 13, and ahead of its release, the looter-shooter got a new rocking trailer showing the Vault Hunters jamming out to some Queen.

The new trailer shows the four Vault Hunters–Amara the Siren, FL4K the Beastmaster, Moze the Gunner, and Zane the Operative–wreaking havoc and causing mayhem as they attempt to thwart Troy and Tyreen Calypso’s evil plans. It’s a dazzling display of lights and explosions and chaos, all soundtracked to Queen’s “Seven Seas of Rhye” from the band’s 1973 debut album Queen and the 1974 follow-up Queen II.

The critics have spoken and we’ve compiled a roundup of Borderlands 3 reviews from various publications. In our Borderlands 3 review we said, “The game’s character-driven narrative acts as a satisfying finale for the loot-shooter franchise, and the new mechanics and features–especially the reworked skill trees and weapon manufacturer effects–give you plenty of agency in how you want to play through it. If you’ve never been a fan of the franchise, it’s unlikely Borderlands 3 does enough things differently to change your mind, as the game best excels at continuing what the series has always done: deliver a humorous tall tale of misfits looting and shooting their way to heroism.”

Borderlands 3 may be just on the horizon, but developer Gearbox already has plans for the game’s first wave of post-release content. These include a Halloween-themed limited-time event called Bloody Harvest, a much larger update called Maliwan Takedown, and the first of its major DLC expansions all launching before the end of 2019, with more content likely to come in 2020.

New Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC Trailer Hints At New Boss Encounters

Ahead of this year’s Tokyo Game Show, scheduled to run from September 12-15 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, Square Enix showed off a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts III‘s upcoming DLC. Re Mind, the action-RPG’s first piece of post-launch content, is slated to arrive this winter on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Square Enix says Re Mind is a free update for Kingdom Hearts III that sees Sora take on the evil Organization XIII. With a new battle form and friends at his side, Sora will encounter new enemies and bosses as he travels to a familiar realm. In addition to playable characters like Aqua, Roxas, and Riku, you’ll also get access to additional Keyblades when Re Mind launches later in the year. No specific release date has been provided.

In our Kingdom Hearts III review, GameSpot editor Tamoor Hussain said, “What sticks with me is the exciting battle against elemental titans with Hercules, taking Rapunzel out into the unfamiliar wide world for the first time, snapping selfies with Winnie the Pooh, and going toe to toe with Davy Jones. In 2002, as Sora, I left Destiny Islands to travel across the universe and make new friends. In 2019 I brought old ones home, and I had so much fun doing it.”

Free New Content Coming To Remnant: From The Ashes

Free new content updates are on their way to Remnant: From the Ashes. The flawed but fun third-person action-adventure sees a new mode and dungeon arrive later this month, whether you’re fighting alone or with friends in tow.

Adventure Mode releases on September 12. This is a new game mode that allows players to re-roll individual worlds and play altered versions of previous campaign missions. You’ll be able to embark on an adventure through the dynamically generated worlds of Earth, Rhom, and Yaesha, beginning at a single bonfire-esque World Stone and ending once you’ve defeated the world’s final boss. Enemy spawns, points of interest, dungeon locations, and more may be different from the main campaign to throw a spanner into the works. All you have to do is select Adventure Mode from World Settings to begin. This won’t affect your current campaign progress either, and any items or traits gained along the way are free to keep.

Another free update is out on September 19, introducing a new dungeon called Leto’s Lab. You’ll have to fight your way through Research Station Alpha, exploring the lab of head researcher Leto Apostolakis. He theorized that the mysterious red crystals spread throughout Remnant could be used to bridge space-time for near-instantaneous travel, eventually unlocking the World Stone on Ward 16 and allowing mankind to travel to other worlds. Leto’s experiments quickly diverged, however, and the lab was forced to evacuate when one of his dubious experiments went awry.

Leto’s Lab will dynamically spawn on Earth after its release. This new dungeon differs from the others in Remnant by revealing more backstory about the world while mixing in light puzzles with its usual combat.

You can check out GameSpot’s Remnant: From the Ashes review. “For the most part, the experiment is a success, resulting in deeply satisfying combat against creative and challenging enemies,” said Alessandro Barbosa. “Remnant struggles to effectively transfer that success over to an engaging loot system and an interesting story to wrap it all up, but when you’re blasting away foes with weapons crafted from the remains of your latest boss kill, it’s hard not to do so with a wide smile on your face.”

Pokemon Sword And Shield May Have Autosave For The First Time

Nintendo gave us another look at Pokemon Sword and Shield during its latest Direct presentation. While the segment focused primarily on trainer customization and camping, it seems Nintendo may have also inadvertently revealed the games will feature autosaves.

During the Pokemon portion of the latest Nintendo Direct, eagle-eyed fans spotted the words “now saving” in the upper right corner of the screen when the player character enters a fashion boutique (via Eurogamer), which seems to suggest the games will automatically save at various points while you’re playing. The moment in question occurs at around the 45-second mark in the video below.

If Sword and Shield do indeed utilize autosaves, they will be the first mainline games in the series to have the feature. However, it’s still unclear if the titles will only feature one save slot, as all past mainline Pokemon games have, or if there will be separate slots for the autosaves, as in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Whatever the case, we do know that autosaves won’t be replacing manually saving in Sword and Shield; at around the 1:20 mark in the same video, you can see a dedicated Save option when the menu screen is pulled up.

Similarly, the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons is also the first installment in its series to make use of autosaves. In fact, Switch’s autosave function is the reason Mr. Resetti will be out of a job in New Horizons. In the past, the irritable mole would pop up and lecture a player if they quit the game without saving, but thanks to autosaves, his role is now redundant. However, game director Aya Kyogoku teases that Mr. Resetti is looking for a new job and may yet appear in the upcoming title.

Pokemon Sword and Shield launch for Switch on November 15, just a few days after Nintendo releases a special Pokemon edition Nintendo Switch Lite. You can check out all the new Gen 8 Pokemon revealed so far for Sword and Shield in our gallery. For more on the titles, be sure to check out our Pokemon Sword and Shield pre-order guide.

Dying Light 2’s World Is Four Times Bigger Than Previous Game

Dying Light took place in the fictional Middle-Eastern city of Harran. The sun-soaked streets and dilapidated buildings made up a sprawling playground that was split into two distinct zones. Since using parkour to get around by climbing, jumping–and generally doing anything to avoid the zombie hordes–was the only form of traversal, the city felt a lot bigger than it actually was.

In Dying Light 2, the sequel’s fictional European metropolis is four times larger than all of the maps in its predecessor combined–including The Following DLC’s expansive farmland. “We are witnessing a lot of changes in the technology side,” said Pawel Rohleder, chief technology officer at developer Techland, in an interview on the Nvidia GeForce YouTube channel. “The game world will be four times bigger than the whole game before,” he continued. “Streaming technology allows us to make really huge worlds.”

On top of the sheer breadth of the map, Dying Light 2 will also be implementing ray tracing tech, too. “This is like the holy grail in computer graphics and photorealism,” Rohleder explained. Beyond this, Dying Light 2 places a large emphasis on story and the choices you make. Writer and designer Chris Avellon–who’s known for his work on the likes of Fallout 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Prey–is collaborating with Techland as a narrative designer. “This is one of the biggest challenges for us; every choice that you make may impact the world. For example, we have to have different versions of the map, and the map is huge so the challenge is even bigger,” Rohleder said. “The world combinations are a really huge number of possibilities.”

Techland recently released a 26-minute gameplay video showcasing how Dying Light 2’s map can change depending on the choices you make. After the player opts to turn on some water pumps, an underground city emerges from beneath the waves, giving you a new area to explore that also changes the direction of the narrative.

Dying Light 2 is due out Spring 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

80 Minutes Of Death Stranding Will Be Shown At TGS 2019

The Tokyo Games Show kicks off this week, running from September 12 to 15 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia has already outlined its plans for the show, showcasing numerous first- and third-party games across its show floor booth, a nearby mega-theatre, and a series of live-streamed stage events. Similarly to E3, Sony won’t be hosting a press conference at TGS. And while the much-anticipated Ghost of Tsushima will be at the show, there won’t be any new footage.

The same can’t be said of Death Stranding, however. Developer Kojima Productions will host two extensive gameplay presentations at TGS for its next game. The first is set to take place on September 12 and will be roughly 50 minutes long, introducing the overall gameplay flow of Death Stranding. The second occurs the following day and will run for 30 minutes. There’s also a third presentation on September 15 featuring the game’s Japanese voice actors, but very little gameplay is likely to be shown and this is intended as more of a fan appreciation day. Game director Hideo Kojima will be present at all three.

There’s no word on whether any of this footage will see the light of day and make it onto the internet. Death Stranding is slated to appear on Sony’s live stage show, so we’re likely to see a truncated version of what’s shown during these lengthy gameplay presentations at TGS’ mega-theatre. Either way, we might find out a little bit more about what exactly Death Stranding is. Or maybe not? “Even now, I don’t understand the game,” Kojima said in a recent interview with the Financial Times. “Its world view, gameplay, they are all new. My mission is to create a genre that does not currently exist, and which takes everyone by surprise. There is, naturally, a risk in that.”

What we do know is that Death Stranding will have a very easy mode for movie fans, and that it’s set to release on November 8 for PlayStation 4.

P.T. Still Finds New Ways To Scare Us, Years After Being Delisted

P.T. achieved legendary status in 2015 after Konami cancelled Silent Hills and subsequently delisted the experimental demo from the PlayStation Store. It was already incredibly popular–as evidenced by over a million downloads–and is widely regarded as one of the best horror games ever made. Throw in the involvement of Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus; the fact it’s still unavailable to download; and the incredible notion that people are still finding secrets within it, and P.T.’s legacy is easy to understand.

After all these years it’s also still finding ways to terrify us. Modder Lance McDonald, who’s responsible for a number of cool hacks in games like Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Sekiro over on his YouTube channel, has now turned his considerable expertise to P.T., gleaning some horrifying new information about what was lurking just outside of view. By hacking and managing to unlock the camera, McDonald was able to move the player character forward while keeping the camera still, revealing that evil ghost Lisa is creeping behind you at nearly all times.

“I’ve been slowly working on looking for useful bits of code in P.T. for months, usually just messing around for a few hours a week and having no luck at all,” McDonald told VG247. “I finally found all the code that handles the ‘zoom in’ when the player clicks the R3 button. I removed all the code that adjusts the camera and replaced it with my own, and then patched the game so that it thinks you’re always holding R3, so it constantly injects my custom camera axis.”

His discovery is haunting, but there’s even more P.T. content on the way. “I only tweeted what I did because I’m confident I have enough other awesome stuff to save for a full video,” McDonald said. The prospect of seeing between more of P.T.’s seams is an exciting one and should lead to some intriguing footage. Kojima’s Silent Hills teaser may be gone from the PlayStation Store forever, but it’s still finding ways to infiltrate our nightmares all these years later.

New Resident Evil Game, Project Resistance, Gets First Trailer

Capcom has officially revealed a new Resident Evil game called “Project Resistance.” Its existence has been known for some time now, with leaks indicating that it would be a multiplayer experience of some sort. The official trailer, released as part of the Tokyo Game Show, confirms this to be true.

Four characters are shown fighting their way through an office building-like setting, using guns and melee weapons to take out zombies and work their way through a series of sticky situations. Interestingly, another figure is shown to be orchestrating everything from the comfort of what looks to be an Umbrella lab; the shadowy organization no doubt has a big part to play in events, as is usually the case with Resident Evil games.

Alongside the classic shambling undead, Project Resistance will be pulling from the Resident Evil franchise’s more iconic enemies. The trailer ends with the Tyrant appearing and the mysterious figure pulling strings behind the scenes assuming control, hinting that a player will be able to take control of enemies in the game. All of this gives it a definite Left 4 Dead feeling.

Project Resistance looks to be a four-versus-one asynchronous online multiplayer game. It’s developed on the same engine powering the Resident Evil 2 remake. As of yet, there hasn’t been any details on when the game will be released and, given the title, it may be some time before the final version is launched.

From September 12 through September 19, Xbox One and PS4 owners in Japan that are interested in the game can sign up for a chance to be invited into a closed beta for Project Resistance. The beta will take place from October 4 to October 7. Details on a beta outside of Japan have not been revealed yet.

Those at Tokyo Game Show, meanwhile, can get their hands-on with the title but need to have registered in advance to do so. Project Resistance will have a booth at TGS where attendees can watch members of the development team show off gameplay for the first time. Capcom has not indicated whether this footage will be released for those not in attendance to see.

The last Resident Evil game to be released was the remake of Resident Evil 2, which GameSpot awarded a 9/10. “Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it’s also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series’ finest entries,” said Alessandro Fillari. “But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story’s conclusion. Though Resident Evil 2 has its roots firmly in the past, it reworks the familiar horrors into something that feels brand new and all its own.” You can read the full Resident Evil 2 Remake review for a more thorough analysis of the game.
