Destiny 2’s Season Of The Dawn Gets A New Time Travel-Filled Trailer

Destiny 2‘s Season of the Undying ends in a week, which means its next batch of content, the Season of the Dawn, is nearly upon us. We’ve heard very little about what to expect from the new season–until now, that is. Bungie just dropped a new trailer that shows off what to expect with the next weekly reset, and finally gives some clarity to what the cryptic phrase “fix the timeline” means.

Bungie shared the trailer on Twitter, which shifts Destiny 2’s focus away from the moon, the major location of the Shadowkeep expansion and the Season of the Undying, to Mercury. According to the trailer, the events of the Season of the Undying have messed up the timeline, thanks to the meddling of the time-traveling enemy robots, the Vex. That’s left an opening for the Cabal to try to use time travel to change the events of the Red War, Destiny 2’s vanilla story campaign.

As the trailer shows, you’ll be interacting a lot with Osiris, a legendary exiled Guardian who was the focus of the Curse of Osiris expansion back in Destiny 2’s first year. Osiris has been hanging out on Mercury, fighting the Vex and preventing them from using their time travel powers to change the timeline. He now has a machine called the Sundial, which apparently is also related to time travel, and will be the focus of a new six-player activity. Though we didn’t get many details in the trailer, it looks like you’ll be defending against waves of enemies, not unlike the Vex Offensive activity from the Season of the Undying. The Sundial activity will be available to season pass holders but not free players, according to the Season of the Dawn rundown on Bungie’s website.

The story of the season also has a big lore hook: Saint-14. Another legendary Guardian, Saint-14 was the original Titan Vanguard leader, who held the role before the current Vanguard, Zavala. He famously took on the Vex and was killed, and over the years, we’ve gathered a few artifacts related to him that have told his story, like the Helm of Saint-14 Exotic helmet and the Perfect Paradox shotgun.

The legendary Guardian Saint-14 fell to the Vex, but it sounds like you’ll be saving him–with the help of time travel.Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6

Not only are we defending the timeline against the Cabal, it also looks like we’ll be traveling through time and making some changes of our own. Chief among them: We’ll be trying to save Saint-14 once and for all.

The trailer also hints at a bunch of other new stuff in the season, including new Exotic weapon quests and the return of the Rusted Lands Crucible map from Destiny 1. From the sounds of things in the trailer, it’ll be the location of a new Elimination game mode.

There are a few additional details about the season on Bungie’s website as well, including this explanation of what sounds like the main story thrust of the season: “Help Osiris fix the timeline by restoring Obelisks on four destinations.”

Bungie’s rundown of the Season of the Dawn mentions helping Osiris fix the timeline by repairing obelisks located at four different locations. This image seems to show one on the Tangled Shore.

The Season of the Dawn rundown shows off the new season pass rewards, which includes Symmetry, a new Exotic scout rifle that season pass holders will unlock immediately at the start of the season, and free players will earn at rank 35. Bungie also showed off the new armor you’ll be earning throughout the season, and teased the next seasonal artifact, the Lantern of Osiris. If last season was any indication, it’ll likely unlock a bunch of season-specific mods, while also boosting your overall Power level above the hard Power cap of 960.

Bungie announced last week it’s planning a live stream with more information about the Season of the Dawn ahead of its launch. That’s set to take place at 10 AM PT on Wednesday, December 4, so stay tuned for more info about what to expect from the season later this week.
