Where Is Xur?

You’ll find Xur on Titan this week. Land at the Rig and head northeast toward the edge of the area. Xur is hiding in a low building near the edge of the platform; it’ll be on your left as you approach.

What Exotics Is Xur Selling?

For a weapon this week, Xur brings Hard Light, one of the most fun Exotics in Destiny 2. It’s an auto-rifle that fires powerful elemental ricochet rounds that don’t lose their effectiveness at range, and do even more damage once they bounce. Plus, you can change Hard Light’s elemental damage type at any time, making it extremely versatile.

Xur’s armor haul includes Wings of Sacred Dawn for Warlocks, a chest armor piece that can suspend you in midair when you aim down the sights; the effect lasts even longer as you land hits. Hunters can grab Gemini Jester leg armor, which disorients enemies near you when you dodge, removing their radar. Finally, Titans can grab the Helm of Saint-14 helmet, which gives overshields to allies who walk through your Ward of Dawn bubble shield. Enemies who pass through the shield are blinded, as are enemies who get too close to your Sentinel Shield while you’re guarding.

  • Hard Light — 29 Legendary Shards
  • Gemini Jester (Hunter leg armor) — 23 Legendary Shards
  • Helm of Saint-14 (Titan helmet) — 23 Legendary Shards
  • Wings of Sacred Dawn (Warlock chest armor) — 23 Legendary Shards

Beyond this, you can get a Fated Engram, which you can only buy one of per week but will decrypt into an Exotic you don’t already own. That costs a whopping 97 Legendary Shards. You can also pick up an Invitation of the Nine for nine Legendary Shards, giving you some special objectives to complete, or the Five of Swords challenge card to adjust Nightfall Strike modifiers.

Xur will stick around until the weekly reset on Tuesday, July 16, so make sure to visit him before then if you’re interested.

There’s a lot of other things to do in Destiny 2 in the meantime. FFXIV Shadowbringers’ AI Teammates Are More Important Than You Think

At first, I was one of many who were skeptical of clearing new dungeons in Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers with an AI-controlled party. Dungeons (or instances) are often nuanced with specific mechanics, putting pressure on you to burn down bosses before things get out of hand. And there’s a certain comfort in taking on the challenge with a group of actual players who know what they’re doing, likely to carry or guide you if you’re having trouble.

But for my first-time dungeon runs in Shadowbringers, I’ve gladly given that up in favor of fighting alongside FFXIV’s cast–it’s hard to overstate the impact of experiencing the most pivotal battles with the characters who’ve shared your harrowing journey.

Dungeons have always been a strong suit of FFXIV as they offer substantial gameplay scenarios that tie directly into the overall story. While you always needed a party of real players, it was never prohibitively difficult thanks to a functional matchmaking system to fill the proper Tank, Healer, and DPS roles. But now we have the Trust system for main quest’s dungeons in Shadowbringers.

No longer do DPS players, such as myself, have to wait in potentially long queues to progress the main story. Despite a largely positive experience with random players, I’m not burdened with the fear of not carrying my weight (shout out to multiplayer anxiety). And I’m free to go at my own pace since I dictate when the party moves. That’s all well and good, especially for getting familiar with dungeon mechanics, but those reasons aren’t necessarily what make the Trust system so important.

Throughout FFXIV, it always felt a little odd that your long-time allies, Scions of the Seventh Dawn, would often conveniently show up in cutscenes once the dust settled, or they’d be fighting their own side-battle that you’d rarely get to see play out. But now, we see them participate in the consequential battles, and they are active in your success.

We wanted to make sure that we’re depicting them on this journey together and with you, so that players would fall even more in love with the characters and see them in that kind of light…make them more alive in this game we play. – Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of FFXIV

Take the first dungeon, Holminster Switch, for example (see the video above); it’s your first taste of the high stakes of Shadowbringers’ story, with creatures of Light consuming the people and wildlife, and setting villages ablaze. This is also a resolution for a smaller, yet tragic arc for the major character Alisaie and a close friend of hers. When you bring Alisaie and her twin brother Alphinaud along as teammates, small bits of dialogue between them give insight into the struggles she’s faced with. Alphinaud has been such an important character since A Realm Reborn, and finally he’s actively picking up the team with his scholarly healing abilities. Similarly, we get to see the enigmatic Crystal Exarch walk the walk and take part in the fight he’s helping lead, adapting to whichever role you need filled.

Holminster Switch also exudes a sense of urgency through well-scripted sequences and a powerful theme song that sets a bold tone for the dire situation. So, to overcome it with the ones who are integral to the events at hand, rather than players you probably won’t see again or that don’t exactly have a place in your personal journey, builds a stronger connection to the cast and narrative stakes. After all, it was one of the major reasons for creating the Trust system.

“…I’m fine. We should keep moving.”Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida himself shares the sentiment, and told me in an interview, “We had this goal of [telling a story about] trying to save the world from immediate doom, but you never really felt that sense of battling together with the members of the Scions. We wanted to make sure that we’re depicting them on this journey together and with you, so that players would fall even more in love with the characters and see them in that kind of light…make them more alive in this game we play.”

Yoshida-san continued, “We’ve manually programmed this AI so that it will bring out the personalities of these different characters, and we have spent a lot of development resources in order to bring out these characteristics.”

He also spoke to the balancing act of making sure it doesn’t overshadow the multiplayer aspect that’s crucial to FFXIV; it’s still an MMORPG. And in my experience, the trade-offs are easily recognizable. The Trust system only applies to the main story questline dungeons and is specifically designed to be less efficient than a competent party that uses optimal attack rotations and tactics. You’ll also wipe and reset to your last checkpoint if you yourself get knocked out in battle. Overall, it’ll take up more time to clear dungeons through Trust. One benefit first-timers get, however, is that AI-controlled teammates already understand how boss battle work–they’ll telegraph and brace for enemy attacks accordingly and set themselves up for phase transitions properly so the party doesn’t wipe from misunderstanding mechanics.

Finally, you can share some of those pivotal, hard-fought battles with the characters who matter most in the Shadowbringers expansion.

Accommodating different types of players is an important goal for Yoshida-san, who said, “With any aspect of it, all of our players seem to enjoy different elements of the game.” And for those who rather enjoy going solo, he stated, “It’s not necessarily a bad thing to want to play in an MMORPG by yourself and so, I feel that it might be nice to have a system that allows for that.”

Although I’m not finished with the main questline for Shadowbringers quite yet, I do understand that the Trust system changes after the last quest is complete. The AI characters are brought back down to level 71 and must be leveled up by taking them back into early dungeons to gain EXP–they do not sync to the proper level in the post-game. It admittedly sounds like a strange choice, and I’m not sure it’ll be appealing to grind dungeons to level them back up. For me, I’m content with its existence as a means to support stronger storytelling.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

Speaking more broadly, it’s easy to think of the Trust system as the development team sowing the seeds for preserving the rich narrative aspect of FFXIV. In its most recent count, Square Enix reports that over 16 million players are registered with the game. But far into the future, when a player-base naturally wanes, those instanced dungeons tied to crucial story quests would become a nuisance to run if it solely relied on matchmaking or forming parties. Retrofitting previous content with the Trust system wouldn’t be without its constraints, though.

Yoshida-san spoke to how ambitious of an undertaking it would be, saying, “We mentioned that it will cost a lot of development resources, in order to program the AI. If we were asked, ‘Will we be applying this to previous content, like areas in A Realm Reborn?’ it’s going to be a very difficult decision because again, it takes massive development resources. We will need to make a decision if we want to continue applying this system to contents that are coming in the future.”

The world and narrative of FFXIV has spanned nine years at this point, accounting for the original launch which is the vital foundation for all that’s happened in the game. Finally, you can share some of those pivotal, hard-fought battles with the characters who matter most in the Shadowbringers expansion. Admittedly, this perspective on the Trust system’s importance hinges on how invested you are in FFXIV’s story. But I, and many others, see that FFXIV has transcended its MMO sensibilities to become one of the great tales told in the storied franchise.

Epic Issues Warning To Fortnite iOS Players

Fortnite developer Epic Games has warned fans who play the game on iPhone and iPad against installing the latest iOS update. Writing on Twitter, the developer cited “stability concerns.”

The company stated: “We’re aware of stability concerns on the iOS 13 beta for Fortnite Mobile. We recommend that players do not use the iOS 13 beta at this time.”

iOS 13 is currently in open beta before its public release later this year. It includes a new visual style and a much-requested dark mode, as well as new camera features and additional privacy measures. Apple is also preparing to launch its Apple TV+ streaming platform and Apple Arcade games subscription.

Fortnite, meanwhile, received its latest content update just recently. Update 9.30’s content update 3 added a new throwable named the Air Strike, which rains down missiles on your opponents. For more, check out the patch notes for Fortnite’s 9.30 update.

Switch Lite — When And Why Nintendo Refreshes Portable Hardware

Nintendo has announced the Switch Lite, a smaller and lighter model that lacks the TV docking mode. That makes this version of the Switch a dedicated handheld, similar to Nintendo’s long legacy with the Game Boy, DS, and 3DS. Hardware revisions have become a regular practice for Nintendo’s handheld systems, for a variety of reasons. To glean why, and what this might mean for the future of the Nintendo Switch, we can take a look back at Nintendo’s history of hardware revisions.

From Game Boy to 2DS Lite

The Game Boy, Nintendo’s first dedicated handheld hardware (setting aside the Game & Watch), was followed by both the Game Boy Pocket and the Game Boy Color. The first was a revision to the form factor, while the second added color functionality lacking from the original and was backwards compatible with existing Game Boy games. The Game Boy Advance similarly was followed by the Game Boy Advance SP, which added a much-needed backlight, and the ultra-tiny Game Boy Micro.

The clunky first iteration of the Nintendo DS was then followed by the much more popular DS Lite. Nintendo followed that with the DSi, targeted at the emerging online marketplace, and finally the DSi XL with larger screens.

Nintendo’s latest handheld system, the 3DS, has had the most hardware revisions of any system–in part because it split into a separate “2DS” line with its own iterations. The original 3DS was followed by the 2DS and a big-screen XL model. Confusingly, though, the system iterations also started branding themselves as “New.” This left three more revisions: the New Nintendo 3DS, the New Nintendo 3DS XL and the New 2DS XL. The New 2DS is the latest iteration, though it notably ditches the flat system design of the original 2DS in favor of the clam-shell design of the other 3DS models.

Better, Stronger, Faster

The rationales behind these various hardware revisions were numerous. Some, like the Game Boy Pocket and 3DS XL, were revisions to the overall form factor without many notable changes to functionality. Others were clearly designed to reach some degree of feedback or market demand, like the GBA SP’s backlit screen or the DSi’s online marketplace. And some, like the original 2DS, are built more heartily and budget-priced to appeal to families who may have younger players.

One common factor remains the same throughout all of the revisions, though. By introducing a steady stream of revised hardware, Nintendo has been able to maintain or even increase sales while older models are starting to reach their saturation point. Whether by attracting repeat customers who want to trade up for new features, or expanding the market to new players, hardware revisions have consistently been a sales driver for Nintendo.

Peaks and Valleys

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad responded to the Nintendo Switch Lite news on Twitter by publishing a pair of sales charts for DS and 3DS models. The first shows the original DS model peaking in its second year, and almost immediately becoming fully overtaken by the much more successful DS Lite. The Lite ruled the DS roost for three straight years, before becoming overtaken by the DSi. The DSi XL, by comparison, mostly kept pace with its non-XL version. In each case, we can see how the models begin to dip just as another lines up to replace it in the market, keeping the top-line sales of all units combined relatively consistent over a long period of time.

The 3DS shows a similar trajectory. Though the original model of 3DS was much more successful than the original DS, the 3DS XL helped supplement it just as it began to drop. In fact, thanks to a wider array of different models–six instead of four–the top-line sales on 3DS models remains even more consistent, though not reaching the high highs of the DS models.

Switch Lite And Beyond

The Nintendo Switch Lite is an unusual hardware revision, largely because it abandons a central part of the system’s identity. The ability to “switch” between TV-docked and handheld modes was the main pitch for this console, to the point that it’s even named after it. This makes the revision most closely analogous to the 2DS, which stripped out the 3D functionality of the 3DS. Also, the 2DS did not replace the former models like some hardware revisions, but began its own line. Nintendo hasn’t given any indication that the Switch Lite signals a change to a portable-only future for the console, and a high-end model is still rumored to be on the way.

It may also be similar to the 2DS in that it’s smaller and looks more solid. A hands-on report claimed the controllers are less “creaky” since they can’t detach. All this would seemingly make it a good fit for younger players. This is especially relevant as Pokemon Sword and Shield approaches, and it’s no coincidence that Nintendo is putting out a special Switch Lite model to match.

However, while Nintendo never admitted as such, the stripping out of 3D from the 2DS appeared like a tacit acknowledgement that its gamble on 3D hadn’t panned out. The feature was widely regarded as inconsistent and Nintendo may have had research data that showed it going underused. It’s difficult to say if the Switch Lite is a response to market trends. In a financial presentation from March 2018, Nintendo reported almost 30% of users playing primarily in handheld mode, as compared to less than 20% playing primarily in docked mode.

Time To First Hardware Revision (Earliest Territory)

  • Game Boy to Game Boy Pocket: 104 months
  • Nintendo DS to DS Lite: 16 months
  • Nintendo 3DS to 3DS XL: 17 months
  • Nintendo Switch to Switch Lite: 30 months

In terms of timing, the Nintendo Switch is now two years old. That puts this hardware revision slightly later in the Switch lifespan than the DS Lite and 3DS XL’s first revisions. Switch sales were slightly down in the most recent fiscal quarter reporting, so like its predecessors, the Switch Lite appears primed to pick up the slack. If Nintendo continues its trends from prior generations, though, we’re likely to see more revisions, possibly including one as early as next year, and then a steady stream of others following for nearly a decade. The original Nintendo Switch is reportedly getting a subtle update to some internal components as well.

If the Switch Lite signals a 3DS/2DS split, the company could alternate between revisions to the portable-only “Lite” line and the main console hybrid line. Either way, don’t expect this to be the last Nintendo Switch.
