What Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Ending Teases About The Franchise’s Future

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the story of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot, as well as the original series. Read on at your own risk!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboots the 2007 game, bringing back some of the same characters but putting them into a new, more contemporary situation. The game reimagines a few specific people and their roles in world events, like series regular Captain Price. It also suggests that more Modern Warfare sequels are on the way and gives a few hints at where the series might be headed in a post-credits scene and with its Spec Ops mode.

To understand the direction of Modern Warfare 2019’s ending, you need to remember the plot from the original series. Those games saw a Russian ultranationalist named Irman Zharkaev attempting to destabilize world politics in order to trigger a world war between the US and Russia–with the help of an American general. Modern Warfare 2019 doesn’t include those old villains, instead focusing on the crisis taking place in a fictional, Russian-occupied Middle Eastern country called Urzikstan. But there are more Modern Warfare series regulars mentioned toward the end of the game, which suggests we might see some of the original franchise’s plot points get reimagined as well.

What Happens In The End

The post-credits scene of Modern Warfare 2019 sees Captain Price meeting with CIA agent Kate Laswell to discuss the future. Price sees the need for a new military unit that can go to hot spots around the world, without implicating any particular government with its operations. That leads to the creation of Task Force 141, with Price running down which soldiers he’d like to recruit for the group, which will fight terrorists and rogue military leaders like those seen in Modern Warfare.

That puts the new Modern Warfare into a rebooted timeline before the events of the original game–we’re seeing Price set up Task Force 141, whereas in Modern Warfare 2007, the group is already in operation. And it seems that this new game could be setting up a reimagined version of some of the events of the first Modern Warfare, as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The Return Of Al-Asad

No Caption Provided

Start the cooperative Spec Ops mode and you can continue the story of Modern Warfare 2019 with more missions. The opening cutscene sees the return of a villain from the original game: Kaled Al-Asad, a military leader who, at the start of the 2007 game, led a coup in a Middle Eastern country. If you remember the plot of the original game, you know that Al-Asad eventually set off a nuclear weapon in his country. It was also revealed that he was working with Zharkaev, and that the events in Al-Asad’s country set things in motion that eventually led to Russia attacking the US and World War III. It seems Spec Ops is showing us the early days of Al-Asad’s operations, but his presence is a big suggestion that we might see events from the original Modern Warfare in the next game. Zharkaev hasn’t shown up yet in Modern Warfare 2019, but it seems likely he wouldn’t be far behind his former co-conspirator.

Shepherd’s Plans

In Modern Warfare 2, we learn that there’s another villain working in the shadows to create war between the US and Russia: Gen. Shepherd, the commanding officer of Task Force 141. Like Zharkaev and his beliefs about Russia, Shepherd thinks the only way to return America to its former glory is through war. He’s the one responsible for the No Russian mission in that game, in which a terrorist group attacks civilians in a Russian airport. At the end of the mission, the terrorists kill the character you play as; it’s revealed you were a CIA agent, and the US gets blamed for the attack.

Eventually, Captain Price and Soap, the player character, track Shepherd down and kill him, but not before the damage is done and Russia invades the US. Shepherd doesn’t appear in the new Modern Warfare, but he is mentioned briefly at the start of Spec Ops. That means he’s back in the rebooted timeline, along with Al-Asad and, presumably, Zharkaev.

The Future Of The Franchise

So what do all these recurring villains mean? It seems very likely that just as Infinity Ward revisited the character of Price and put him into new situations, it’s also planning to revisit Al-Asad, Shepherd, and Zharkaev in its rebooted timeline. Because it’s set before the formation of Task Force 141, the events of the original Modern Warfare haven’t taken place yet in the rebooted timeline–but a lot of the same players are there. Given how Infinity Ward’s new Modern Warfare is taking a page from current political situations in the world, it seems very likely that future Modern Warfare games will also feature different events from the original trilogy. However, a lot of the ideas from the series that started in 2007, like shaky US and Russia relations, international terrorism, and proxy wars around the world, are still relevant today. We don’t yet know what future Modern Warfare games have in store, but these characters and their role in past games, plus the current events shaping Modern Warfare 2019, give a hint that a conflict between the US and Russia is likely brewing in the future.

Here’s How Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Reboots The Series’ Timeline

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019, as well as the original series. You might want to finish the campaign before reading further.

When it rebooted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward reimagined some of the series’ original characters and put them in a new, more contemporary setting. The game’s story deals with events that are similar to what’s happening in our real world, and while some of the characters are the same, the story of the game is very different.

But the ending of Modern Warfare 2019 includes some hints that characters and events from the original series might be part of future installments. It also reimagines the timeline of the original franchise, placing the reboot before the events of the original game. That doesn’t mean Modern Warfare 2019 is a true prequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, per se–but it seems that plot points and characters from the original games might be appearing in the rebooted series’ future.

The Ending Of Modern Warfare 2019

Much of the information about Modern Warfare 2019’s placement in a new, rebooted franchise timeline comes from the post-credits scene at the end of its campaign. In it, we see series mainstay Captain Price talking with CIA agent Kate Laswell, both of whom are major characters in the reboot. Price discusses setting up a new squad, one that will be able to operate around the world to deal with crises without implication particular governments with its actions. Price has a name for the squad: Task Force 141.

If you’re familiar with the original Modern Warfare, you know that in that game, Task Force 141 is already fully up and running, and operating in the world. You join the squad as John “Soap” MacTavish and run through a training simulator before joining the squad on a mission. This is the biggest indcator that Modern Warfare 2019 takes on the role of something of an origin story: Task Force 141 is only an idea at the end of Modern Warfare 2019 and the events of this new game spur its creation.

Al-Asad’s Coup

The original Modern Warfare kicked off with a coup in a Middle Eastern country, led by Kaled Al-Asad, one of the game’s villains. A big part of that game is about taking Al-Asad down, which results in him launching a nuclear weapon against American and coalition forces fighting to stop him in his country. Al-Asad is not a major player in most of the rebooted Modern Warfare, but he does show up at the end of the game in the cooperative Spec Ops mode. It seems your goal in that mode is to fight him and his terrorist organization.

That means we’re seeing Al-Asad at an earlier point in the progression of the original Modern Warfare’s story, before he gains enough power to take over a country. It’s not clear right now if that means the next game in Infinity Ward’s new Modern Warfare timeline will have similar events to the 2007 game, but it’s definitely possible. We could see the next CoD game focus entirely on Al-Asad, which could easily dovetail into a story with similar events to the original Modern Warfare trilogy–which, you might recall, ended with a world war between the US and Russia. Modern Warfare 2019 also mentions Gen. Shepherd, the American military commander who betrays Task Force 141 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Shepherd mentioned as still working with Price and Laswell in Spec Ops.

Taken together, these hints all suggest that Modern Warfare 2019 is at the start of a new series that could revisit some of the territory of the original–or could completely reimagine it. Still, we know that the latest entry into the Call of Duty franchise is actually something of an origin story for the squad we fought with throughout the original Modern Warfare trilogy. Where the story goes from here, though, is anybody’s guess, although Infinity Ward has definitely included some hints.

New Nvidia Shield TV Being Sold Ahead Of Official Reveal

The next revision of Nvidia’s Shield TV hasn’t been officially revealed yet, as Nvidia is still teasing its reveal for October 28. However, after it already leaked online last week, it seems as if the new Shield TV devices are already in stores and ready for customers–and in some cases, already being sold. Reddit user Bubba_Nosferatu spotted the different models of the new Shield TV at a Best Buy and bought one.

Bubba_Nosferatu posted images of the two devices at their local Best Buy. 2019’s revision of the original Shield TV, labelled “Pro,” has a price tag of $200 USD, while the stick-like Shield TV device is set at $150. Bubba_Nosferatu noted in a second post that the Pro model of the Shield TV is physically identical to the 2017 version. The stick-like Shield TV device, on the other hand, looks more like a vape pen with an HDMI port.

Bubba’s photos also reveal some things we didn’t know, including the features and specs of the Pro model. This first image seems to indicate that the base Shield TV (the stick device) won’t feature two USB 3.0 ports, a Plex media server, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, or “premium Android games,” all of which are exclusive to the Pro model. Unfortunately, Bubba’s photos don’t reveal the actual specs of the base Shield TV, but the second image does give us the exact details for the Shield TV Pro.

  • Nvidia Tegra X1+ Processor
  • 256-Core Nvidia GPU
  • Dolby Atmos – Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 Audio
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 16 GB Storage
  • USB 3.0 Expandability
  • 80.11ac Dual-Band MIMO Wi-Fi
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Bluetooth 5.0 + LE

We expect to see an official announcement from Nvidia on Monday, October 28, but if you’re lucky (and willing to pull a fast one on an unknowing employee), you may be able to head to your local Best Buy or other retailer and pick up the device right now.

Bethesda Clarifies Fallout 76’s Private Server Issues

Bethesda has released a statement in regards to some of the more prominent issues in Fallout 1st–the new subscription-based content update for Fallout 76. Speaking to GameSpot, Bethesda addressed the reported issues individually.

In regards to the disappearing scrap issue, Bethesda said, “A small number of players with a large quantity of scrap are experiencing a display issue causing their Scrapbox to appear empty. At this time, we believe this is a User Interface issue and that players have not lost any scrap. Players should still be able to access the scrap for crafting from workbenches. We are actively working to address this issue, both internally and using the data and characters folks from the community have provided us.”

Players have also expressed concern that their private servers have appeared already looted, but Bethesda clarified that this is most likely not an issue. Instead, private worlds behave like Fallout 76’s public worlds do. “When a Fallout 1st member starts a Private World, a dedicated World is launched on an AWS server,” Bethesda said. “Players who have seen looted containers upon login may be experiencing the expected behavior upon log out and log in. Loot is instanced for each player in containers. As Fallout 76 players know, if you loot a container on one server, and then log out and log back into another server, the container remains in a looted state for a period of time.”

Finally, Bethesda admits that allowing friends to join private worlds without gaining permission from the host player is not ideal and should be changed. “Currently, players on your friends list can join your Private World without an invitation,” Bethesda said. “We understand this is not what players expected for their private worlds and we are looking to provide an option in an upcoming patch that will allow Fallout 1st members to restrict access to their servers more completely, preventing friends from joining without permission.”

For $12.99 / £11.99 a month or $99.99 / £99.99 a year, a Fallout 1st subscription provides you with access to private worlds, a monthly bonus of 1,650 atoms to spend in the Atomic Shop, discounts on certain items in the in-game store, a private Scrapbox, unique emotes, the Ranger Armor outfit, and a survival tent that acts as a fast travel point you can put anywhere on the map.

Bethesda had already announced that some of these additions would be coming to Fallout 76 but gave no prior indication that they would be locked behind a paywall. This has attracted some criticism from players in the Fallout 76 community–though it remains to be seen how this will affect the overall reception that Bethesda has been cultivating for the game with its free post-launch content updates.

One of Fallout 76’s most anticipated expansions, Wastelanders, has also been delayed. Wastelanders is scheduled to add NPCs with dialogue and quest-lines to Fallout 76, which would ideally curate a gameplay experience similar to Fallout 76’s single-player predecessors.

Another Destiny 2 Exotic Quest Kicks Off Next Week

Destiny 2‘s Halloween event, the Festival of the Lost, is on its way with the weekly reset on Tuesday, October 29. But that’s not the only new content hitting the game next week. Season pass holders will also get a new Exotic weapon quest for the machine gun Xenophage, as well as access to a new dungeon as part of the Shadowkeep expansion.

Bungie gave a few new details about the upcoming content bits in its This Week at Bungie blog post. It includes a look at the Exotic machine gun, but very little in the way of information about what the quest will entail or how you can start it. We do know that it’s exclusive to Shadowkeep owners (sorry, Guardians who joined with the free-to-play New Light version of Destiny 2) and that it contains an insect as part of its design. Bungie also teased that you might have some options in how you earn the new gun.

No Caption Provided

“Where will your path take you first? There will be many options for you to consider, depending on how you like to play the most,” Bungie wrote in the post.

Apart from Xenophage, October 29 will also see the addition of Shadowkeep’s new dungeon. If it’s anything like the Shattered Throne dungeon of the Forsaken expansion, it’ll be a challenging three-player activity akin to what we might expect from Destiny 2’s raids. Apparently, access to the new area will require speaking with Eris Morn on Tuesday.

Changes are also coming to the Crucible with a new 6-on-6 mode called Momentum Control, which will be part of the featured playlist. “This is a fast-paced, hair-on-fire experience where the lethality of all weapons has been cranked to 11,” the blog post explains. “You’re incentivized to be aggressive as you defeat other Guardians to earn charged melees, grenades, and Supers.”

Here are all the changes Momentum Transfer will include:

  • Instant Respawn Times
    • Out of the fight? No problem; drop right back in immediately
  • Weapon Damage Increased
    • Higher combat lethality
    • Everything in your arsenal is a contender
  • Ability Regen Requires Effort
    • Defeat enemy players to charge your melee, grenade, and Super
  • No Tracker
    • Sneak around your enemies for some sweet flanks
  • Amped Control
    • Zones capture faster and grant more bonus points per kill
  • Super Charged Supers
    • Increased damage resist in Super means you become the 1,000-pound gorilla
    • Be careful, because Heavy weapons will put you down quickly
  • The Heaviest of Ammo
    • Increased Heavy ammo respawn rates and drop amounts

That’s just about everything detailed on Destiny 2’s content calendar for the first month and change of Shadowkeep, and we’ll have guides for the Festival of the Lost’s Haunted Forest activity, the Xenophage Exotic quest, and the new dungeon shortly after they launch. There are a few more things to expect, however–the Garden of Salvation raid gets its first challenge on November 5, and the next phase of the Vex Offensive seasonal event, Final Assault, on November 19. That’s quite a bit to keep players busy through mid-November.

It’s worth noting that the Festival of the Lost event is free to all players, but the dungeon, Xenophage, and Vex Offensive require the Shadowkeep expansion and its included season pass for the Season of the Undying.

Gears Of War Designer Was Asked To Join Death Stranding But Here’s Why He Said No

Cliff Bleszinski, the creator and designer of Gears of War, nearly had a role in Hideo Kojima’s much-anticipated upcoming game Death Stranding. Bleszinski said on Twitter that Kojima asked him to visit the studio to get scanned into the game, but it didn’t work out.

Bleszinski said on Twitter that he wasn’t able to collaborate with Kojima for Death Stranding due in part to how, at the time, he was going through the collapse of his latest game studio, Boss Key Productions.

“He asked me to come get scanned when I was in Japan but it was as [Boss Key Productions] was nearly over and I was starting my ‘lay low’ phase and opted out. Kinda regret it,” he said.

Bleszinski revealed this after God of War director Cory Barlog lamented the fact that he wasn’t invited to be a part of Death Stranding with a cameo of his own.

All of this news comes immediately after comedian and late night TV host Conan O’Brien revealed that he was scanned into Death Stranding and has a cameo role in the game.

Even without Bleszinski and Barlog, Death Stranding is stuffed with celebrity roles and cameos. Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus plays main character Sam “Porter” Bridges, while Hannibal and Casino Royale actor Mads Mikkelsen plays Cliff. James Bond actress Lea Seydoux plays a character named Fragile, while Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Margaret Qualley portrays Mama. The Bionic Woman actress Lindsay Wagner portrays Bridget in Death Stranding, while veteran voice actor Troy Baker plays Higgs. Tommie Earl Jones (Pandora, The Politician) plays Die-Hardman.

The Death Stranding review embargo lifts on November 1, so keep checking back with GameSpot for more on the title in the days and weeks ahead.

Death Stranding officially launches on November 8 for PS4.

Bethesda Acquires New Studio To Make More Mobile Games

Bethesda, the publisher of Fallout and Elder Scrolls, has acquired a mobile game studio to help bolster its efforts in the space. Bethesda announced that it has acquired the Canadian studio Alpha Dog Games, which developed the action-RPG Wraithborne and the action-strategy game MonstroCity: Rampage.

Bethesda vice president of development Todd Vaughn said in a statement that the publisher was “impressed” by Alpha Dog’s “commitment to quality and depth of experience in mobile.”

“We’re excited to have them join the Bethesda family,” Vaughn added

Alpha Dog will work alongside Bethesda on its “growing mobile game initiative.” The studio will create “new exciting titles” for both iOS and Android.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Founded in 2012, Alpha Dog by veterans Shawn Woods (former art director at Microsoft) and Jeff Cameron (Microsoft, THQ, EA, Ubisoft, 2K, and HBO), Alpha Dog says its games aim to “set the bar high with a heavy focus on social experience.” The studio develops its games using the Unity and Unreal Engine 4 development tools.

Bethesda’s first mobile game was Fallout Shelter, which proved to be a big hit, making many millions of dollars from microtransactions. It’s still supported today with new content and updates. Bethesda then released the digital card game The Elder Scrolls: Legends in 2017, which was followed up by The Elder Scrolls: Blades in 2019.

Bethesda has been ramping up its mobile efforts, even before this new announcement. In 2015, the company opened a new office branch in Montreal that would “expand its development capabilities in console, PC, and mobile gaming.”

In other news, Bethesda just recently announced a new subscription service for Fallout 76 called Fallout 1st. The offering, which goes for $100 per year, grants access to private servers and more. Bethesda recently spoke to GameSpot to clarify some of the private server issues.

Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest Challenges Revealed

Borderlands 3‘s Bloody Harvest event is live and its challenges have been revealed. Bloody Harvest releases alongside a new hotfix.

According to YouTuber Menthex, there are 15 challenges in total. Completing them allows you to unlock unique Halloween-themed rewards. Bloody Harvest is scheduled to end December 5, so you have until then to complete all 15 of its challenges. We’ve outlined all of them below.

Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest Challenges

  • An Eye for Quality Hecktoplasm – Kill 20 Loot Ghosts
  • Chaotic Good Cleric – Kill 500 Ghosts in Mayhem Mode

You can’t jump into Bloody Harvest until you’ve unlocked Sanctuary III, the hub area in Borderlands 3. Once you’ve reached Sanctuary III, talk to Maurice to begin the event. He’ll be the sentient fire-breathing dinosaur creature wandering around. Speaking with Maurice unlocks a quest to hunt down Hecktoplasm. Once you’ve acquired a sufficient amount, you’ll unlock a new area, Heck, where you can battle against the dead spirits of enemies you’ve long since killed. There’s a new boss in the area too, Captain Haunt.

At a glance, it looks like you’ll actually complete most of the Bloody Harvest challenges by completing the quests you get from Maurice. You’ll have to kill haunted enemies anyway to earn Hecktoplasm, and your journey to Heck will see you go up against even more haunted creatures and earn Bloody Harvest loot–such as a new legendary shotgun. The only ones you likely have to keep conscious track of while playing are killing Captain Haunt with a Bloody Harvest gun, solve the Pumpkin Puzzle, and kill 100 haunted enemies with Cryo damage in the Heck Hole.

New Code Vein Update Out Now, Here Are The Patch Notes

Bandai Namco has revealed a new Code Vein update, which is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The version 1.10 update introduces Halloween-themed content, difficulty reduction options, various bug fixes, and more.

Just in time the spooky season, Code Vein will receive some additions to its character creator, including Halloween-themed color palettes and face paints, as well as new accessories and hair functionality. The update will also change exploration and battle systems, giving you the option to lock the direction of the mini-map and turn off damage screen effects when near death.

Code Vein’s version 1.10 update also allows you to reduce the difficulty of New Game Plus. Elsewhere, the update addresses various bug issues, such as application errors and enemy movement.

In our Code Vein review, we said, “Code Vein adopts the Souls-like formula in its structure, presenting a familiar cycle of progression and basic combat similarities, and there are some interesting ideas here, too, built around the use of various Blood Codes and their distinct Gifts. You can see the fragments of a fantastic game hidden within these systems and its meaty combat feedback, but the mundanity of its enemies and the effect they have on nullifying the combat’s enjoyment prevent Code Vein from ever realizing its potential.”
