Thief Steals $40,000 Of Goods From Valve

Following a series of break-ins at Valve’s headquarters in Washington, the suspect who stole over $40,000 from the game developer has been summoned to appear in court.

Police say Shawn Shaputis, 32, broke into Valve “four or five times” and stole more than $40,000 in games and equipment. Charges against Shaputis were filed last month, but the break-ins date back to June 2018. Local news station KIRO 7 reported that Shaputis is the same man who led police on a high-speed chase in a FedEx truck in July 2018. Shaputis already had six warrants out for his arrest prior to his court summons for the Valve burglary.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that Shaputis has been spotted on GameStop surveillance cameras selling stolen merchandise to the brick-and-mortar store.

Shaputis is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. Another warrant for his arrest will be issued if he fails to appear.

Destiny 2 Update Reduces Heavy Ammo In Crucible, Fixes A Big Bug

Week 2 of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep and Season of the Undying has begun, bringing the first weekly reset of the season. This coincides with the release of both a new hotfix patch, version 2.6.0.3, and a server-side update. The former fixes a serious lingering issue concerning the seasonal artifact, while the latter makes a surprisingly swift change to Heavy ammo in Crucible. Here’s what’s changed.

Hotfix 2.6.0.3 is a simple one, with a lone item on its list of patch notes. Bungie has fixed the issue it warned players about last week: that claiming the Gate Lord’s Eye artifact while in an activity where your equipment is locked could prevent you from obtaining it. Given that’s an item you want to obtain as soon as possible to begin leveling it up, that was a real problem. The new patch notes say the issue has been resolved.

As for the server-side update, Bungie has made changes to balance in several Crucible playlists. In a message on its forums, community manager Cozmo acknowledged complaints regarding the large amount of Heavy ammo available in Crucible following changes implemented alongside Shadowkeep. In certain modes, this involved allowing an entire team to claim Heavy ammo within a limited window of time, rather than only a single player, as was previously the case.

That isn’t changing with the new update. Instead, Bungie is reducing the rate at which Heavy ammo spawns into the map. Here’s how it now works in these game modes:

Control

  • New: first spawn at 45 seconds and then every 120 seconds
  • Old: first spawn at 45 seconds and then every 60 seconds

Clash/Supremacy

  • New: first spawn at 60 seconds and then every 120 seconds
  • Old: first spawn 15 seconds and then every 60 seconds

Cozmo said that Heavy ammo changes are coming later this month to the 3v3 Survival mode; Bungie is unable to implement them now due to the lack of server-side settings for it. The amount of ammo that’s granted will also be reduced to match Elimination and 6v6 modes. Here’s how that will look after the update:

3v3 Survival

  • New: first spawn at 60 seconds and then 60 seconds later (as the tiebreaker objective spawns)
  • Old: first spawn at 30 seconds and then every 60 seconds

Regarding Survival, Cozmo added, “We saw a lot of feedback about making Heavy one round or being removed but wanted to make sure there was still an incentive for players to maintain map control and not camp at the edge of the map once they have a life advantage. We will continue to monitor feedback on these changes.”

Pokemon Masters Update Gives Out Free Gems For A Limited Time

DeNA has rolled out a new update for Pokemon Masters. Patch 1.2.1 is out now and finally resolves some issues that have been affecting the game the past few weeks. To make up for this delay, the developer is also giving out free Gems to all players for a limited time.

“As compensation for recent issues in Pokemon Masters, 1,000 Gems have been sent to all players,” the official Pokemon Masters Twitter account announced. To claim your Gems, you’ll need to log into the game before November 7 at 7:59 AM PT / 10:59 AM ET.

The issue in question involved a discrepancy in Power values. Specifically, the Power value of certain moves used during battle would be lower than they were supposed to be, affecting the game’s balance. With this update, the correct Power value will be taken into account in battles.

Pokemon Masters launched on iOS and Android devices on August 28, and the game is off to a strong start. According to mobile analytics company Sensor Tower, Masters made more than $26 million during its first week of availability. The only other Pokemon mobile game to earn more within that time frame was Pokemon Go, although that game had the disadvantage of launching in fewer territories.

Pokemon Masters is set in an island region called Pasio, where famous trainers have gathered for the Pokemon Masters League competition. If you’re just getting started in the game, be sure check out our roundup of everything you need to know about Pokemon Masters. We’ve also broken down what Scout Points are and how to get them, as well as how to evolve and Mega Evolve Pokemon in the game.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Special Ops Mode Returns

For Call of Duty fans familiar with the Special Ops mode from Modern Warfare’s past, Activision has confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will receive a brand-new, reimagined Special Ops mode of its own.

Confirmed to launch on October 25–the same day the Modern Warfare reboot lands on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One–Special Ops features cooperative missions for up to four players that pick up where Modern Warfare’s story ends. In this mode, you’re tasked with “sever[ing] a global terror organization’s access to weapons, funds, intelligence, and hardware,” according to an Activision blog post. Activision also shared a reveal trailer, which you can watch above.

This iteration of Special Ops has been expanded into “a collection of interconnected Operations against a new and encroaching threat” that will see you advance Modern Warfare’s overarching story by executing multi-phased objectives. Special Ops will include two confirmed modes of play: Missions and Operations.

Missions can be played in single- or multiplayer and are “more curated experiences” that will test your skills with specific weapons, killstreaks, and other tools. Completing missions will net you either a one-, two-, or three-star rating, which will yield varying rewards. There is also an “Infinity Ward time” posted for you to compete against.

Operations serve as the meat of Special Ops, where the “largest and most involved multi-stage experiences” take place. With four multi-stage Operations shipping at launch, each one concludes with the removal or destruction of a key aspect of the Al-Qatala army. Activision says the enemy will react to your decision in real-time.

New Missions and Operations will debut simultaneously across all platforms and will release “throughout the post-launch seasons.” You can check out some Special Ops screens below.

There is plenty of cross-progression between online multiplayer and Special Ops, with your Operative and killstreaks carrying over between both modes. This includes your customized primary and secondary weapons, as well as any other unlockable items and equipment you may have attached the last time you played.

There is also Special Ops Survival, which is exclusive to PS4 until October 2020 and puts you and up to three other players against waves of “increasingly difficult and determined combatants in a variety of experiences.” This mode is unrelated to Special Ops Missions and Operations and serves as an additional, wave-based experience for PS4 players.

Fortnite: Where To Collect Visitor Recording On Floating Island And Retail Row (Season 10 Overtime Challenge)

We’re in the final stretch of Fortnite Season 10. This season of Epic’s popular battle royale shooter is scheduled to end this weekend with a big event, but before then, the developer has one last set of Overtime challenges for players to complete.

This batch is called Out of Time, and most of its challenges are fairly straightforward, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble completing them. However, interspersed among the challenges are a couple of tasks to track down recordings by The Visitor–the time-traveling antagonist from Season 4 who returned to the game and is building another rocket, which will undoubtedly figure into this weekend’s big in-game event.

The first such challenge asks you to collect the Visitor recording on the Floating Island and in Retail Row. If you’re not sure where those recordings are hidden, don’t worry; we explain where to go and what to do to complete this challenge below.

No Caption Provided

Where Are The Visitor Recording Locations?

As the challenge states, there are two recordings to find: one on the floating island, the other tucked away somewhere in Retail Row. The areas themselves are easy to find, but since each one is fairly sizable, you’ll likely have trouble tracking down the recordings within each unless you already know where to go.

The floating island is, of course, floating around the map, so its location will change depending on when you jump into the game, but the recording will always be in the same spot: in the back of a yellow truck. The vehicle is parked by the building near the motel’s swimming pool.

The second recording, meanwhile, is inside the bookstore on the eastern end of Retail Row, near the water tower. Head up the stairs inside the store and you’ll see the recording–signified as a cassette tape–in the middle of the floor.

How To Complete The Challenge

Once you know where to look, all you need to do is head to the aforementioned spots and pick up the recordings as you would any other item in the game. Collect both and you’ll receive 2,500 Season 10 XP for your troubles. You’ll also be able to listen to the actual recordings, which cryptically mention the Seven–an enigmatic group first alluded to in The Visitor and The Scientist’s skin descriptions.

Season 10 of Fortnite ends this Sunday, October 13, so you have until then to complete any remaining challenges from this season. Be sure to consult our complete Fortnite Season 10 challenges roundup for maps and guides for this season’s trickiest missions. And to help you prepare for what’s to come next season, check out everything we know about Fortnite Season 11 so far.

Xbox One October Update Out Now, Here’s What It Does

Much like the PlayStation 4’s 7.00 update, which is out now, Xbox One’s October update is available to download and it brings many “fan feedback-driven features” like new family settings, wishlist notifications, and more.

In a blog post that breaks down all the new features, the Xbox One October update targets a few specific areas: family, streaming, and notifications.

Family settings have received some improvements to give parents “more control over what their children see and interact with.” These changes include limiting the amount of time individuals spend across Windows 10 and Xbox devices. But they can be further specified by limiting the amount of time per app or game across your devices, meaning an hour of Fortnite is an hour of Fortnite–and that’s it.

Microsoft also outlined how the new wishlist feature has been enhanced. Now instead of adding a game to your wishlist and forgetting about it, the Microsoft Store will send you a notification when that game goes on sale. Other notification improvements center around Xbox Game Pass, where you can now recommend games to a friend or a whole community. We’ve learned what the new Xbox Game Pass titles are for this month and they include excellent first-person action (Dishonored 2), a huge open-world sandbox (The Outer Worlds), and more.

On the streaming side, Mixer has gotten some improvements as well, as it is getting built directly into the Xbox One’s dashboard. You will no longer need to navigate to a separate app or the Mixer tab in order to watch streams instantly.

That’s not all this new update has to offer. Check below for a shortlist of other improvements included in the Xbox One October update.

Xbox One October 2019 Update

  • Recent Players Improvements: Engaging with your Recent Players has been streamlined to make the experience easier, faster, and more reliable.
  • Under-The-Hood Game Update Improvements: Games should start faster and automatic game updates have been improved to significantly reduce the “update required” message.
  • Events App: A new app for notifications on when events are happening in communities and games.
  • More Flexible Capture Settings: The “allow game captures” setting has newer options to give you more control.
  • Capture & Share Experiment: A test feature rolling out to “a limited portion of the Xbox One audience” that will improve the usability of capturing and sharing content.

Blizzard Bans Hearthstone Pro Over Hong Kong Protest Support

Activision Blizzard banned a professional Hearthstone player from competitive events and rescinded his winnings after he voiced support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. The decision has led to sharp criticism from some in the community, including calls for a boycott.

CBS News reports that Ng Wai Chung aka “Blitzchung” was conducting a post-match interview when he shouted, “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.” Blizzard found this was in violation of its Hearthstone Grandmasters competition rules, and indicated the offending rule:

“Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image will result in a removal from Grandmasters and reduction of the player’s prize total to $0 USD,” the rule reads.

Chung has subsequently been banned from Hearthstone esports for one year, and he’ll need to forfeit $10,000 in prize money from the tournament. Activision Blizzard is partly owned by the Chinese company Tencent. The company also noted that the two hosts were fired. Chung has been a competitive Hearthstone player for years, having placed in tournaments starting in 2017 according to Liquidpedia.

Blizzard is now facing backlash from fans for the decision. The Hearthstone subreddit is currently populated with several heavily upvoted threads from fans saying they’ve quit the game, often referencing how many years they’ve played or how much money they’ve spent. Some have criticized Blizzard for the incident in light of its value statements on plaques outside the main office, which say “Think Globally” and “Every Voice Matters.”

GameSpot has contacted Blizzard for further statement, but it has not responded as of the time of writing.

Sony Says PS5’s Ray-Tracing Is The Real Deal

Sony has officially confirmed the PlayStation 5 is coming next year, in time for the holiday season. But alongside the big announcement came some more nitty-gritty details about the PS5 hardware features, including a clarification of an important point for its visual chops.

In its initial debut, hardware architect Mark Cerny confirmed the PS5 will support ray-tracing, a feature that allows for complex light and sound effects to be rendered in a 3D space. But his ambiguous phrasing left some speculating that it was a software-level imitation. With this announcement, Cerny has taken the opportunity to put that fear to bed.

“There is ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware,” Cerny told Wired, “which I believe is the statement that people were looking for.”

At least one developer spoke on the record as well, expanding on the kinds of special effects that the PS5 GPU allows, and how the power of the new GPU in general helps enable new opportunities for developers.

“I could be really specific and talk about experimenting with ambient occlusion techniques, or the examination of ray-traced shadows,” said EA chief studio officer Laura Miele, chief studio officer for EA. “More generally, we’re seeing the GPU be able to power machine learning for all sorts of really interesting advancements in the gameplay and other tools.”

Another developer who may be taking advantage of ray-tracing features is Bluepoint Games, the studio behind remasters like Shadow of the Colossus. That studio says it’s at work on something “big” for PS5. The announcement also gave more details on the PS5 controller, which will feature haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
