Hearthstone Battlegrounds Is Blizzard’s Take On Auto-Battlers

The Hearthstone portion of the BlizzCon 2019 presentation focused mostly on the new expansion, Descent of Dragons, dropping next month. But Blizzard also teased an entirely new game mode coming to the game as well, using the Hearthstone framework for a new auto-battler.

The new mode is called Hearthstone Battlegrounds, and it features eight players taking the role of familiar Hearthstone characters and doing battle against AI minions. It will launch with 24 heroes, each with a unique Hero Power. Blizzard gave the examples of Millificent Manastorm, who gives +1/+1 to recruited Mechs, or Arthas, who lets you give your right-most minion Reborn.

An early access beta will begin on November 5, for anyone who has pre-purchased a Descent of Dragons bundle, along with BlizzCon attendees and Virtual Ticket holders. Then on November 12, it will go into open beta. Once it’s released you’ll find it in a new “Modes” menu that also houses the Arena.

Blizzard also announced how its monetization will work for the new mode. Battlegrounds will be free-to-play just like the main game, but acquiring Hearthstone packs from the latest expansion will get you bonus perks. At 10 Packs, you’ll get stat-tracking, at 20 packs you can select three Heroes instead of two at the start of a match, and at 30 Packs, you get access to emotes.

That means those who simply purchase new packs will get access to the bonuses immediately, but any method of acquiring packs will count as long as they’re from the latest expansion.

New WoW Shadowlands Expansion Trailer Released At BlizzCon 2019

During BlizzCon 2019, a new trailer for the next expansion for World of Warcraft, Shadowlands, was released. The trailer focuses on Sylvanas as she takes on Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, the Lich King. You can watch the trailer below.

In the trailer, Sylvanas journies to the Ice Crown Citadel and approaches the Frozen Throne, where Bolvar sits. As she approaches him, Bolvar’s orange flames begin to glow with an icy blue and he rises to meet Sylvanas’ challenge. The fight is pretty epic, but also fairly one-sided. As strong as Bolvar is, Sylvanas is just stronger. She ultimately takes him down, removes his crown, and chooses to destroy it. The act rips the sky open, raining hellfire on the ice-covered landscape. “This world is a prison,” Sylvanas says with a grimace. “And I will set us all free.”

In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, death is coming for you so you have to journey to the place where no living soul has ever gone before: the Shadowlands–basically the afterlife of the Warcraft universe. On your journey, you’ll encounter the Fallen, those who have died in the story up to this point, and learn what ultimately became of them.

In the Shadowlands, spirits go through a cycle of death and rebirth creating a new type of environment for WoW. In the new expansion, you’ll journey to new zones like Revendreth, Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, and Bastion where you’ll choose a covenant and engage in brand-new dungeons and raids. “Shadowlands is an expansion built around the agency of choice,” game director Ion Hazzikostas said.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is scheduled to release date in 2020.

Diablo 4 Gameplay Trailer Shows New RPG In Action At BlizzCon

BlizzCon 2019 kicked off with the official reveal of Diablo 4, the upcoming entry in the long-time RPG franchise. While we got to see a lengthy cinematic trailer, a gameplay trailer soon followed that showed three classic classes in action: Barbarian, Sorceress, and Druid.

All three classes call back to Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion pack. Barbarian looks to be a close-range melee class that can dual-wield axes and use a number of physical abilities, while Sorceress is a magic-based class that can combine spells to wreak havoc from long-range. And Druid separates itself from the pack with a spell to transform into a bear of sorts, attack from mid-range with some magic. You can see all this in the gameplay video below.

Diablo IV maintains the classic isometric action RPG formula, but adds more like multi-level terrain with verticality. The game also appears to sport a darker, more realistic looking art style, a slight departure from Diablo III‘s cartoon-ish vibe. The final shot of the trailer shows Lilith in-game, who seems to be the main villain this time around based on the cinematic trailer.

Blizzard president J. Allen Brack says the game has been under development for quite some time–it’s also playable on the show floor. For all our coverage on Blizzcon 2019, check out our stories below:

Diablo 4 Announced At BlizzCon 2019

Blizzard kicked off BlizzCon 2019 with a big reveal: Diablo IV. The new installment in the beloved dungeon crawler series is in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it looks to embrace the franchise’s darker roots.

The reveal came by way of an extended cinematic trailer, which set the tone for the game’s darker, more horrific bent. Game director Luis Barriga took the stage following the trailer to shed more light on the title. Barriga summed up Diablo IV in three words: darkness, world, and legacy.

“The first thing you will notice is we are going back to the franchise’s darker roots,” Barriga said. “It’ll mean blood and gore. It’ll mean occult symbols and rituals. More importantly, it’ll mean victories are neither clean nor guaranteed.”

Three classes have been confirmed for the game at launch: Mage, (relies on fire, ice, and lightning magic in long-range combat); Barbarian (relies on swords, clubs, and axes in close-range combat); and Druid (relies on lightning, wind, and transformation magic in mid-range combat).

Diablo IV was actually leaked ahead of its BlizzCon 2019 announcement. German magazine GameStar published an advertisement for The Art of Diablo, a book that includes over 500 pieces of artwork from the Diablo franchise. In the advertisement, you can see that the book includes art from Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III, and Diablo IV–revealing the existence of the fourth game weeks ahead of Blizzard’s official announcement. Then, the day before BlizzCon, Reddit user PracticalBrush12–who’s has a track history for reliably leaking Diablo content–released most of Diablo IV’s details.

A June 2019 report stated that Blizzard cancelled a Starcraft first-person shooter in order to focus on developing Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 (which has also been announced at BlizzCon 2019). Blizzard has not confirmed whether the report is true.

Last year, fans speculated Diablo IV would be announced at BlizzCon 2018. That ended up not being the case, and Blizzard instead revealed it had been working on a Diablo Immortal, a mobile game.

BlizzCon 2019: Blizzard Addresses Recent Hearthstone Banning Controversy

It’s been a wild couple of weeks for Blizzard, following the company’s decision to punish professional Hearthstone player Ng Wai Chung (aka Blitzchung) after he used a post-match interview to express his support of the Hong Kong protests. Though Blizzard already released an official apology for its actions, the company took advantage of its platform at BlizzCon 2019 to further address the situation.

“Blizzard had the opportunity to bring the world together in a Hearthstone tournament,” company president J. Allen Brack said. “We did not. We moved too quickly in our decision making, and to make matters worse we were too slow to talk with you. We didn’t live up to the high standards we really set for ourselves, and second, we failed in our purpose. I’m sorry, and I accept accountability.”

Brack went on to talk about BlizzCon being an opportunity to showcase the global community for its games, and promised, “We will do better going forward.”

In response to the original ban against Blitzchung, a protest was organized that is currently ongoing just outside BlizzCon. “That Blizzard has shown a willingness to re-evaluate their decision is a small step in the right direction, but make no mistake; Blizzard continues to punish these individuals despite widespread outrage from gamers around the world,” protest organizer Dayton Young said in a statement to GameSpot.

“We understand that game publishers and developers have a responsibility to moderate the content that appears on their platforms to ensure that gamers are safe from harassment, threats of violence, and other dangerous behavior,” he continued. “But silencing gamers who speak up about issues that affect their freedom makes us all less safe from oppression and institutional abuse.”

Nioh 2 Open Beta Now Live On PlayStation 4

The open beta for Nioh 2, the sequel to 2017’s Samurai-souls experience Nioh, is now live on the PlayStation Store.

Nioh 2’s open beta clocks in at 12.51 GB and runs from November 1-10. It’s free for all PlayStation 4 owners to download and can be played either solo or in two- to three-player online co-op. Of course, accessing the game’s online features requires an active PS Plus membership.

The open beta gives you the chance to test out Nioh 2’s revamped combat system, in addition to new weapons like Switchglaive and an extensive character creator. With the new Yokai powers, you will trek through two levels and face-off against two very tough bosses. Completing Nioh 2’s open beta nets you The Mark of the Demon Slayer, a reward which unlocks the Kamaitachi Helmet for use in the full game.

Developer Team Ninja revealed that Nioh 2 launches on March 13, 2020. Pre-orders for the action-adventure RPG are now open on PS4. Picking up the Deluxe Edition scores you the game’s season pass, three separate pre-order avatars, a PS4 theme, an armor set, and a charm–all for $80 USD.

Those who missed the original Nioh and have an active PS Plus subscription can pick up the 2017 title for free as part of November’s PS Plus lineup. You can begin downloading Nioh on November 5 and the deal lasts all through the month.

Where Is Xur Today? Destiny 2 Xur Location For Exotic Armor And Weapon (Nov. 1-5)

It’s been a very busy week in Destiny 2, with the launch of a dungeon, the Xenophage Exotic quest, and Festival of the Lost. But each and every weekend in the game also means a visit from Xur, who has an Exotic weapon and armor to sell for Titans, Warlocks, and Hunters. Here’s where to find him today and what he’s selling.

Xur Location

This week, Xur is located on Nessus. Spawn at the Watcher’s Grave landing zone and make your way forward toward Calus’s floating barge just ahead of you. Xur is hanging out toward the back, near all of the chests you can open for runes.

No Caption Provided

What Is Xur Selling?

Xur Item Lineup (Nov. 1-5)

  • Vigilance Wing (Exotic pulse rifle)
  • Lucky Pants (Exotic Hunter leg armor)
  • Peacekeepers (Exotic Titan leg armor)
  • Nezarec’s Sin (Exotic Warlock helmet)

Vigilance Wing

Vigilance Wing

Vigilance Wing is a solid pulse rifle that features the Harsh Truths intrinsic perk, which causes it to fire a five-round burst. It also grants you health regeneration and increased movement speed if a nearby ally dies. Similarly, the Last Stand perk buffs the gun’s performance and your recovery when you’re the last member of your fireteam alive.

Lucky Pants

Lucky Pants (Hunter)

Whether you’ll be interested in Lucky Pants depends entirely on your feelings about hand cannons, as they are the only weapon type to benefit from this Exotic. The Illegally Modded Holster perk loads a round into your stowed hand cannon when you land a precision hit. Additionally, hand cannons can be readied more quickly and are more accurate right after you swap to one.

Stats:

  • Mobility: 7
  • Resilience: 7
  • Recovery: 10
  • Discipline: 12
  • Intellect: 6
  • Strength: 6
  • Total: 48

Peacekeepers

Peacekeepers (Titan)

Just as Lucky Pants are for hand cannon users, Peacekeepers will only be of use if you wield a submachine gun. The Mecha Holster perk reloads a stowed SMG and lets you ready a stowed one immediately. You also get a buff to SMG handling and your movement speed while you have one out.

Stats:

  • Mobility: 7
  • Resilience: 7
  • Recovery: 12
  • Discipline: 6
  • Intellect: 12
  • Strength: 6
  • Total: 50

Nezarec’s Sin

Nezarec’s Sin

Finally, the one piece of Exotic armor this week that doesn’t require a particular weapon type–though it does require you to use a particular element. The Abyssal Extractors perk increases ability recharge rates when you land void damage kills.

Stats:

  • Mobility: 10
  • Resilience: 7
  • Recovery: 7
  • Discipline: 6
  • Intellect: 6
  • Strength: 10
  • Total: 46
