Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Has Double XP From Now Until December 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is about to begin its first proper season, with a huge drop of free content beginning on December 3. While not every map and mode promised will drop at the same time, it’s a significant date for Infinity Ward’s reboot of their popular Call of Duty sub-series. To celebrate, from now until December 2 you can earn double XP in all of Modern Warfare’s online modes. This gives you a good chance to hit Officer Ranks before the first season reset on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

This news comes via the Activision Blog, which also delves further into what the beginning of the new season will mean for players. Once Season 1 begins, your Officer Rank (if you’ve gotten that far) will be locked, and you’ll earn your ribbons for that rank. Everyone will be on a new journey to Rank 155 during the season, as will be the case in subsequent seasons as well. Enlisted Ranks, Mission progress, Blueprint weapons, and your Combat Record will carry over between seasons. The game will also receive its first Battle Pass in December, so it’s going to be a big month for the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare received a 7/10 in our review, and has been a huge sales performer for Activision. If you haven’t jumped into the latest Call of Duty yet, be sure to check out our guide for the best Modern Warfare Black Friday deals–the game will be discounted over Thanksgiving.

Australian Video Game Industry Is Growing, But Still Only Makes Up 0.05 Percent Of Global Revenue

The Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) has released a major new report that shines a light on a number of key statistics about the local Australian video game industry. In short, the local game scene is growing, but is still makes up only a minuscule proportion of global games revenue.

In terms of revenue, the Australian game development industry generated $143.5 million during the 2018-2019 financial year, according to the report. This is up 21 percent from 2017, which is when the last study was undertaken. Another positive for the local game development scene is that 71 percent of surveyed studios said they experienced growth, while 35 percent said they were anticipating this growth to accelerate to “significant growth” for the next year.

The money made by Australian game studios largely came from overseas markets, with 83 percent of total revenue from Australian games coming from outside the country. Australian game developers are also increasingly looking to target markets in Asia, with 65 percent of survey respondents saying they were developing for Asian markets (compared to 37 percent in 2017).

The total number of people working full-time on game development in Australia was 1,275 during the financial year, which is up by 37 percent from the latest survey. Programmers (34 percent) led the way in terms of discipline. The future seems bright for future growth, too, as IGEA’s study said 61 percent of surveyed studios said they expect to hire more people in the coming year, which is up from 53 percent the last time the survey was conducted.

The survey also found that the Australian game development industry, like others around the world, is dominated by men. Only 21 percent of respondents identified as female (which is up from 18 percent in 2017). In terms of geographic breakdown, Melbourne had the most studios, followed by Brisbane and then Sydney.

Some of Australia’s best-known video game developers include Big Ant (AO Tennis), Hipster Whale (Crossy Road), Firemonkeys (Need for Speed), and Halfbrick (Fruit Ninja). All of the major global publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Ubisoft, and 2K, have offices in Australia. Some of the popular indie games to come out of Australia have included titles like Hollow Knight (Team Cherry) and Armello (League of Geeks).

IGEA CEO Ron Curry said the success of the Australian game development scene in the 2018-2019 fiscal year was especially notable because it comes largely without government support from tax credits and other programs. “The survey shows that the Australian game development industry continues to grow and succeed despite a lack of policies to support our industry that makes it harder to develop games in Australia than in almost any other advanced economy,” Curry said. “Games are not only important for their contribution to the nation’s economy and screen sector, they are also interwoven into the fabric of Australian culture, with two-thirds of all Australians playing video games.”

Curry pointed out that the Australian games scene has a lot of room to grow. He pointed out that Canada just recently announced that its local game development scene employs 48,000 people and generated $4 billion for the latest period. That’s 20X bigger than Australia. The gap is even bigger for the United States, where video game revenue amounted to $43 billion in 2018.

“While 83% of the income generated by Australian developers already comes from overseas sources, we’re still only capturing 0.05% of the global games market,” Curry said, referencing the reported $153 billion in global revenue that gaming brings in each year.

Survey respondents said a lack of government funding and a difficulty in securing funding from investors were some of the main challenges they faced in the last year. Developers also said internet speeds continue to be a problem in Australia.

“The Australian game development industry is also rebuilding, with 55% of studios less than five years old,” the report goes on to say. “Given the challenges that local studios are facing with little to no start-up or expansion support from government, coupled with multinational studios looking to Australia as an option for investment, IGEA encourages State and Federal Governments to consider boosting investment and recognition of the sector to spur even greater opportunities.”

No Man’s Sky Synthesis Update Adds Starship Upgrades, Multiple Weapons, And Much More

No Man’s Sky has another huge update coming on November 28, and it’ll add numerous features and improvements to the space exploration game. Update 2.2, which is called Synthesis, is geared towards tackling some of the game’s potentially more frustrating elements, increasing storage, and making a few actions easier to perform. This update will be available for the PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One versions of the game.

The first major change is the new Starship Outfitting Terminals you can find at Space Stations, which will allow you to add inventory slots to your ship or upgrade its class with your nanites, so you can improve your favorite ship. You can also salvage ships for scrap here if you have an older model to offload. The terrain editing system has also been improved with better visual effects and new restore and flatten modes, which will give you more control over how you shape the planets you land on. If you made terrain edits within a base, they’ll now be protected from regeneration, too.

Other major changes include the ability to save custom outfits and allowing everyone to control the Exocraft through a first person camera, not just VR players. Speaking of VR, this update has unified features between versions, so you can now use photo mode and ride creatures when playing the game with a virtual reality headset on. Elsewhere, storage containers have been expanded so that you can store much more in them and give them custom names. A new object has been added–the personal refiner, which lets you refine materials without needing a portable model. You will also be able to carry multiple Multi-Tool weapons and switch between them.

There are close to 300 changes made in total, including numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. We revisited No Man’s Sky after the Beyond update for a new review, and found that the game is in very good shape now. Reviewer Justin Clark wrote that “the drastic improvements made to No Man’s Sky in its Beyond expansion are the new gold standard for how to gracefully cope with a game’s flaws post-release.”

Black Friday 2019: Get Death Stranding (PS4) For $40

Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima’s latest game and his debut project as an independent developer. The renowned producer has been known for his heady topics and unique gameplay systems, and Death Stranding appears to earn that reputation with an adventure that’s experimental and, for some players, divisive.

The best way to come to your own conclusions is to try the game for yourself. It’s a PS4 exclusive for now, though a PC version will be coming next year. GameSpot’s review awarded it a 9/10.

“It’s positive without ignoring pain; in fact, it argues in both its story and its gameplay that adversity itself is what makes things worth doing and life worth living,” wrote Kallie Plagge. “It’s a game that requires patience, compassion, and love, and it’s also one we really need right now.”

Best Black Friday deal on Death Stranding

If you already own a PS4 and you’re looking for a good deal on Death Stranding, the best one we’ve seen is through Ebay, which is offering a brand-new copy of the game plus a $20 PSN gift card (email delivery) for $60, free shipping included. With that offer, you’re effectively getting the game for just $40, which is by far the best discount you’ll find on it this holiday season.

A GameStop flash deal was offering the limited-edition Death Stranding PS4 Pro, which includes the game, for $300, but it’s sold out. We’ll be keeping an eye out in case the deal, or a similar one, comes back.

Consoles and accessories

Early deals from November 24-December 2:

PS4 Slim bundle with God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Last of Us Remastered – $200

PS4 Slim holiday bundle | $200 ($300)

This official PlayStation bundle includes three excellent, PS4-exclusive games–God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition, and The Last of Us Remastered–along with the base console for $200, an excellent deal for anyone buying a PS4 for the first time.

PS4 Pro (Glacier White Edition) – $300

PS4 Pro Glacier White | $300 ($400)

The powerful PS4 Pro is on sale for an excellent price during Black Friday, selling for $300 rather than $400. GameStop’s offer includes the stunning Glacier White model, which comes with a matching controller.

DualShock 4 wireless controllers – $39

DualShock 4 Wireless Controllers (various colors) | $39 each ($60-$65)

PS4 controllers will be $39 each at GameStop during Black Friday, the same price as at Walmart. Other stores will have them for $40 during Black Friday week, but colors available may vary between retailers. GameStop’s flyer includes the new Fall 2019 colors shown above, which normally go for $65 each.

PS Plus one-year membership – $45

PlayStation Plus 12-month membership | $45 ($60)

The official PlayStation Black Friday offer for PS Plus is $45 for a yearly membership. That’s not quite as low as we’d hoped, but if you need to renew your membership (remember PS Plus subscriptions do stack), this is still a nice deal to snag.

PSVR bundle with five games – $200

PlayStation VR Mega Pack | $200 ($300)

This is the best PSVR deal we’ve seen in a long time. For $200, you’ll get the PSVR headset and PlayStation Camera along with five of the system’s best games.

PSVR bundle with Blood & Truth and Everbody’s Golf – $250

PlayStation VR bundle with Blood & Truth, Everybody’s Golf VR | $250 ($350)

This bundle is slightly pricier than other PSVR bundles during Black Friday, but that’s because it comes with two PlayStation Move motion controllers (which can cost as much as $100 a pack). Another bundle includes Beat Saber and Borderlands 2 VR instead, if those are more up your alley.

PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset with Fortnite content – $70

Fortnite Neo Versa Bundle With PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset | $70 ($100)

The discount on this PlayStation Gold wireless headset isn’t exceptional on its own, but if you’re a Fortnite fan, the included Neo Versa bundle is a nice perk that comes with the Epic Neo Versa Outfit, Epic Neo Phrenzy Back Bling, and 2,000 V-Bucks.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Xbox One X bundle – $200

Xbox One S bundle with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Deluxe Edition | $200 ($300)

Get the newest Star Wars adventure on Xbox One with this Xbox One S bundle for only $200, available at many retailers including GameStop.

NBA 2K20 Xbox One X special-edition bundle – $350

Xbox One X special-edition bundle with NBA 2K20 | $350 ($500)

Quite a few Xbox One X bundles will be on sale for Black Friday, but this GameStop-exclusive, special-edition Xbox One X with NBA 2K20 has to be the prettiest with its paint splash design.

Xbox One S All-Digital Edition – $150

Xbox One S All-Digital Edition | $150 ($250)

Not a fan of buying physical games? Then the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition was made for you, but please be aware there’s no disc drive, removing the option entirely to play physical games or Blu-ray discs. The bundle comes with three games: Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, and bonus content for Fortnite: Battle Royale–2,000 V-Bucks and the Legendary Rogue Spider Knight outfit. At just $150, the All-Digital Edition is a much more appealing offer for primarily digital gamers.

Xbox One wireless controllers – $10 off

Xbox Wireless Controllers (various colors) | $10 off

Multiple Xbox controllers will be on sale for $10 off during Black Friday, including the special-edition Gears 5 controller for $65 (previously $75) and other colors for $60 (previously $70 each). It’s worth noting Microsoft’s official Black Friday sale is advertising Xbox controllers for “up to $20 off,” so you may want to compare prices before grabbing one of these from GameStop.

GameStop in-store offer on collectibles and apparel

In-store deal: Get 25% off everything you can stuff in this bag

This is fairly self-explanatory, but from November 24-27, GameStop stores will let you fill a bag with as many collectibles and apparel as you can and get 25% off the entire bag (which you have to buy on its own for $5). Games and hardware are excluded as well as clearance items.

No Caption Provided

Online deal: Get 25% off collectibles when you spend $100 or more

GameStop is as known for selling gaming, anime, and comics merch as much as they are for selling games, and if you’re planning to spend big on status, Funko Pops, and more, you can save a significant amount of cash when you spend $100 or more.

Black Friday deals starting Nov. 27 at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET online:

Nintendo Switch with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and $25 gift coupon – $300

Nintendo Switch (older model) with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, $25 gift coupon | $300

*Only available on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday

GameStop is offering the same Nintendo Switch bundle every other store is because it’s Nintendo’s official console offer this year–just as it was in 2018. While an appealing offer last year, this bundle isn’t quite as impressive in 2019 because a new, improved Switch has since released and has longer battery life. This bundle gets you the older model and a digital copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which commonly goes for around $50 these days. It’s not a bad deal if you love Mario Kart, but just be aware that you’re getting the launch model Switch. That said, GameStop is throwing in a $25 gift coupon to sweeten the deal, so if you love Mario Kart, this is the offer you’d want to take advantage of.

Nintendo Switch Lite with $25 gift coupon – $200

Nintendo Switch Lite (multiple colors) with $25 gift coupon | $200

*Only available on November 30 and December 1

Outright discounts for the new Switch Lite are rare, but if you’re hankering to pick up Nintendo’s handheld-only Switch this holiday season, you can at least get a $25 gift coupon with the offer at GameStop.

HTC Vive Pro VR starter kit – $800

HTC Vive Pro VR Starter Kit | $800 ($1,100)

With the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, some people may be persuaded to finally pick up a VR headset this holiday season, and luckily, the HTC Vive Pro will be cheaper at GameStop for Black Friday. Normally sold for $1,100, you’ll find the HTC Vive Pro Starter Kit–which includes the headset, two SteamVR base stations, and two Vive controllers–for $800. Alternatively, the headset by itself will be on sale for just $600 (normally $800).

HTC Vive Cosmo VR headset – $600

HTC Vive Cosmo VR System | $600 ($700)

The HTC Vive Cosmos will be $100 off for Black Friday. It includes six tracking cameras, Steam and Viveport library access, 12 months of Viveport Infinity (with access to more than 700 games and apps), and more.

Holiday Thanos – $12

Buy two, get one free on all $12 Funko Pop figures

We’ve seen this deal at GameStop before, but it’s a nice offer for Funko Pop collectors. All $12 Funko Pop figures, like this festive Thanos, will be eligible as part of this buy two, get one free deal.

Nerf Fortnite Supply Drop set – $80

Nerf Fortnite Legendary Supply Drop | $80 ($100)

Inspired by the blasters used in Fortnite, this set includes four Nerf Fortnite blasters, 30 Nerf darts, two Nerf rockets, and three bush targets for practicing your aim. Normally sold for $100, it’s down to $80 for Black Friday.

Mario Wired Fight Pad Pro for Nintendo Switch – $15

Wired Fight Pad Pro for Nintendo Switch (Mario or Luigi designs) | $15 ($25)

Fans of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can take advantage of a nice discount on wired Fight Pad Pro controllers for Nintendo Switch, which mimic the design of a traditional GameCube controller and come wired to avoid input lag. Normally sold for $25, they’ll be $10 off for Black Friday.

Lego Star Wars Yoda – $75

Get 25% off all Lego sets

Lego sets are always a popular gift for the holidays, and they can get quite pricey, like this Yoda set that usually sells for $100. GameStop will be offering 25% off all Lego sets for Black Friday, including sets from Star Wars, Overwatch, Minecraft, and more.

Dragon Ball Z ornaments – $10.20

Get 40% off all holiday apparel, calendars, and ornaments

Festive collectibles, like this set of Dragon Ball Z Christmas tree ornaments, are a great way to get in the holiday spirit and decorate with products from Star Wars, Fortnite, Marvel, and more.

Funkoverse Strategy Game – $28

Get 30% off all board games, puzzles, and Funkoverse strategy games

Tabletop fans will find a nice selection of board games and card games marked down, like the Funkoverse strategy games and the 80th anniversary Marvel Monopoly board game.

Super Mario Bros. waffle maker – $20

Super Mario Bros. 1Up Waffle Maker | $20 ($35)

Normally sold for $35, this Mario-themed waffle maker will be on sale for $20. Delicious.

My Hero Academia All-Might T-shirt – $7.97

Buy one, get one free on all T-shirts

Now’s a great time to stock up on new tees for 2020, like this one featuring All Might from My Hero Academia. GameStop’s entire T-shirt collection is eligible for this offer, encompassing categories like anime, Marvel, Nintendo, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and more.

Black Friday 2019 Best Deals On PC Games: Red Dead 2, Outer Worlds, And More

Black Friday 2019 deals continue to roll out as we quickly approach the shopping holiday. Steam’s Black Friday sale is underway, but that doesn’t mean it has the best prices; oftentimes, the best deals on PC games for Steam come from elsewhere. Case in point, digital games store Fanatical has jumped into the Black Friday fray, offering more savings on the year’s hottest games, a number of which are redeemable on Steam. The Fanatical Black Friday sale continues until November 29 and offers a variety of unique deals on well-known games, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and Borderlands 3, while also showing off some of the more obscure and overlooked games from recent years.

What sets Fanatical’s online sale apart from others are the unique flash sales happening every 24 hours. Every day of the week-long sale will cycle in a new set of games that can be purchased at a more significant discount than usual. In addition to the flash sales, other games on sale include Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Superhot VR, NBA 2K20, and Civilization VI. Even more recent games are discounted as well; in addition to the aforementioned RDR2, The Outer Worlds can be had for less than $45.

Like other digital distribution sites, Fanatical will send you a code for each purchase, which will need to be redeemed at their respective gaming clients. As an example, Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played on the Rockstar Games Launcher, while Borderlands 3 is playable on the Epic Games Store client.

In addition to these deals, Fanatical is also offering further discounts with the use of promo codes. On Fanatical’s front page, you’ll find a special promo code BLACK10 for up to 10% off with any purchase. However, you can also use our exclusive promo code, GAMESPOT11, which will give you 11% off your entire haul. (Unfortunately, you can only use one promo code at a time, so stacking multiple ones will not work. It also can’t be used on pre-orders or Red Dead Redemption 2.)

There are several other big games included in this sale, one of which is Borderlands 3. Released in September, the game was largely well-received, offering a pretty satisfying return to the Borderlands universe. In GameSpot’s Borderlands 3 review, editor Jordan Ramée wrote, “The game’s character-driven narrative acts as a satisfying finale for the loot-shooter franchise, and the new mechanics and features–especially the reworked skill trees and weapon manufacturer effects–give you plenty of agency in how you want to play through it.”

Remember to apply our exclusive promo code, GAMESPOT11, for an additional 11% off the below prices.

Black Friday 2019 PC Deals: $36 For Sekiro, Outer Worlds For $40, And More At Green Man Gaming

Black Friday 2019 hasn’t properly kicked off yet, but Green Man Gaming has already opened the floodgates early to offer deals on a variety of games–including Borderlands 3, The Outer Worlds, and even Red Dead Redemption 2. As a part of its extended sale, the digital games retailer currently has well over 40 games up for sale right now, and on Tuesday, it added even more, including Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and Mortal Kombat 11.

This sale features some recent releases, along with other games that have come out in the last few years. In addition to the games mentioned above, GMG’s sale also includes Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Grand Theft Auto V, Tropico 6, and Civilization VI.

What’s special about GMG’s Black Friday sale is that certain purchases will also add in the Intel Starter Pack, allowing you to redeem an additional five free games from a select pool of titles. Some of these games include Resident Evil 7, Evil Within 2, Dishonored 2. The GMG sale also includes some great deals on gaming memberships and premium services. Any game purchased on Green Man Gaming can be redeemed on their respective digital distribution service. For instance, purchasing The Outer Worlds will give you a code that can be redeemed on the Epic Games Store, while Red Dead 2 will be playable on the Rockstar Games Launcher.

This sale doesn’t just focus on PC games, it also includes deals on gaming memberships to premium services. Notably, a 12-month PlayStation Plus membership is available for just $42.74, which is better than Sony’s official PS Plus offer for Black Friday ($45). So if you’re looking to top off your membership or try out a brand new service, then now is a pretty good time to dive in.

The biggest game on this sale is easily Red Dead Redemption 2, which recently came out on PC. GameSpot editor Michael Higham recently did a deep-dive into the PC version, and he was quite impressed with how it turned out. “Red Dead Redemption 2 is a case where its visual prowess is inseparable from its identity, which the PC version delivers on, given the right specs and the overcoming of technical issues,” he wrote.
