Biggest News From Square Enix E3 2019 Press Conference: Avengers Game, Outriders, More

The Square Enix E3 2019 press conference has come and gone, and we got a lot of news and reveals. The company announced new Final Fantasy remasters, showed off more of Final Fantasy VII Remake, and announced a new title from the makers of Bulletstorm.

Perhaps the biggest news, at least to some, came at the end when Square Enix showcased the all-new Marvel’s Avengers game coming to console and PC in 2020. Here’s is a quick rundown of the biggest announcements to come from the presentation.

Marvel’s Avengers Finally Revealed

Let’s start at the end. Square Enix capped off its E3 2019 briefing with the official reveal of Marvel’s Avengers, which up until this point was locked down in secret. Square Enix didn’t show a lot of gameplay, but the company confirmed its narrative will be told over the course of “multiple years,” and in good news, all post-release characters and locations will be free. We also learned what kind of game it is, sort of.

Square Enix said players can work together in teams of up to four to save the planet from hostile threats in an original story. Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America are the initial characters, and Square Enix recruited huge names like Troy Baker, Nolan North, Laura Bailey, and others to voice them. The game launches in May 2020, and there will be a pre-release beta that PS4 users can get into first.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Details

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Remake’s release date a day prior during a music concert, but the company still had news to share during the briefing. The PS4 exclusive featured extensively at the beginning of the show with an extended gameplay demonstration and combat breakdown with Cloud and Barret. Specifically, Square Enix showed off how Active Tim Battle Wait (ATB Wait) works in the remake. Additionally, the demonstration showed off more of the game’s action-RPG mechanics.

In addition to the combat details, Square Enix announced the $330 1st Class Edition that comes a Steelbook case, art book, mini-soundtrack CD, and a Play Arts Kai Cloud Strife and Hardy Daytona statue. There are also a variety of digital extras such as the bonus summon Materia DLC (Carbuncle and Cactuar) and a Chocobo chick for pre-ordering.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake launches in March 2020.

The Polish developer behind Gears of War Judgement and Bulletstorm announced a brand-new IP called Outriders during the Square Enix press conference. It’s an action/shooter game featuring co-op, and it is set in a dark, brutal world overrun with nasty creatures. Playing to developer People Can Fly’s strengths, the game features a wide variety of different weapons that players can use to vanquish their foes. Outriders launches in Summer 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. People Can Fly says you can expect more details about the game sometime this winter.

Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers Release Date

The popular Final Fantasy MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online featured in Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference. Producer Naoki Yoshida spoke about how he envisions Shadowbringers as more than an expansion pack, stuffed with enough new content to stand alone as its own game. The expansion adds two new jobs, Gunbreaker and Dancer, while a pair of new races–Hrothgar and Viera–are added in the expansion as well.

Shadowbringers launches on July 2.
