The Game Awards Will Let You Try Upcoming Games On Steam For A Limited Time

The Game Awards is just a day away, airing live on December 12 at 5:30 PM PT / 8:30 PM ET. Show host Geoff Keighley has announced a brand-new digital consumer festival that lets you play a handful of demos on Steam for free.

The Game Festival is billed as the “first-of-its-kind,” a digital consumer event as part of a pilot program with Steam. For a limited 48-hour window, you can get your hands on 13 demos before they’re removed from Steam. These include gruesome platformer Carrion, cute skateboarding title SkateBIRD, wholesome adventure game Spiritfarer, and more.

The Game Festival runs from Thursday, December 12 at 10 AM PT to Saturday, December 14 at 10 AM PT. Some of the available demos to play can be viewed below.

The Game Festival Free Steam Demos

“Let’s face it: Not everyone can attend a physical trade show or consumer event,” Keighley said in a press release. “The Game Festival is designed from the ground-up as an event without barriers, extending the benefits of a physical event to the global gaming community that watches The Game Awards.”

Keighley shared The Game Awards’ nominees earlier this month. Alongside revealing the plethora of titles up for nomination, Keighley confirmed that The Game Awards will feature 10 new game/project reveals. While what will be shown remains to be seen, we do know that Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima will get another trailer during the livestream.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers Just Got A Rare Discount

Black Friday has come and gone, but the deals aren’t slowing down as the Christmas shopping season ramps up. During Black Friday, Nintendo Switch accessory deals were few and far between, and Switch Pro Controllers weren’t featured in Nintendo’s official deals. However, if you were hoping to pick up a Pro Controller during Black Friday, you’re in luck, as the Switch’s official (and very pricey) gamepad just got a nice discount.

Both Amazon and Walmart are currently selling the Switch Pro Controller for $55. Considering this Nintendo controller normally goes for a whopping $70 and rarely goes on sale, this is a hell of a deal and great opportunity for anyone looking to upgrade. Both come with free shipping, and if you have Amazon Prime, you should get free one-day shipping.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | $55 (was $70)

The Switch Pro Controller is an excellent investment if you’re a new Switch owner looking to upgrade from the standard grip and Joy-Cons the Switch comes with. It has a more traditional shape that makes it easier to grip and comfortable to play with for long periods, and it has a nice weight to it. It made our list of the best Switch controllers you can buy, although there are other third-party options out there that are cheaper. For $55, though, you won’t regret picking up the Pro Controller.

It’s unclear how long this deal will last, and it’s likely one of these stores is price-matching the other. So if the Pro Controller has been on your wishlist for some time now, we recommend snagging this deal before it sells out. You certainly won’t have a better chance before Christmas.

Marvel’s Avengers First Prequel Comic Is Available Now

Ahead of the release of Marvel’s Avengers on April 15, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia, the comic book giant is releasing a series of prequel comics that tell the story of the iconic superhero dream team prior to the events of the game. The first issue, called Marvel’s Avengers: Iron Man, is out today.

The comic’s store page sheds some light on what to expect from the brand new Marvel story, at least in the build-up to the game. The Avengers will be going up against the Lethal Legion, an odious group of villains that have appeared throughout Marvel comics history, reforming with a new leader each time they return. They’re not the most well-known antagonists, with the group consisting of the likes of Porcupine, Metal Master, Man-Ape, Batroc The Leaper, and even demonically-enhanced versions of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Nazi official Heinrich Himmler. It’s probably a safe bet to say the latter two won’t be making a reappearance here.

“When Tony Stark discovers his enemies have co-opted Stark technology for nefarious purposes, it’s up to him to stop the leak,” the synopsis says. “But can his teammates be trusted, or is something more sinister at play? Featuring the debut of the game’s Avengers, as well as never before seen takes on some classic villains, you won’t want to miss this landmark moment in comics history!”

Marvel has plans to release more comics in the series, with each member of the game’s Avengers getting their own starring role. Thor #1 releases on January 8, 2020, followed by Hulk #1 on February 5. Both Captain America and Black Widow will see their comics released in March.

Marvel’s Avengers was first announced back in 2017, but we finally got our first glimpse of the game in action at E3 earlier this year. It’s a third-person action title with some RPG elements, letting you take control of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hulk, and Thor. Somewhat surprisingly, however, Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel is the real star of the game. We’ve played it, and finally understand what exactly it is.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Cut Content Reveals New Piece Of Story

A piece of cut content from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been uncovered, and it recontextualizes an important moment late in the game. Spoilers follow.

The modder Lance McDonald, who is known for having uncovered cut content in previous FromSoftware games, found an important but missing piece of dialogue surrounding the character Anayama. If he catches Dragonrot, he can be cured, but he curiously lacks any kind of dialogue when it happens.

Apparently that’s not the case if he’s cured using a special curative pellet that was cut from the game. In that instance, he was going to have an exchange in which he refused to accept the item for free, and so Sekiro charged him a nominal fee of a single Sen. That information changes the context of a later story event, when Sekiro meets Anayama for the last time near the end of the game. At that point, Ayanama offers the Promisory Note for a single Sen, effectively exchanging the kindness back in return.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was one of our nominees for the best games of 2019, which are being detailed throughout this week. GameSpot’s top Game of the Year winner will be revealed on December 17.

Detroit: Become Human PC Specs Revealed

Before launching on the Epic Games Store tomorrow as a timed exclusive, developer Quantic Dream has released the minimum and recommended specifications to run Detroit: Become Human on PC. We’ve compiled the list below so that you can check to see if your machine can withstand the game’s demands.

The official Detroit: Become Human Twitter account shared the announcement, with the minimum and recommended specs comprising two separate tweets. The account said in another tweet that “further specs” will be revealed when the game launches on December 12. Pre-orders for Detroit: Become Human on PC are now open, with the title retailing for $40 USD on the Epic Games Store.

Detroit: Become Human Full PC Requirements

Minimum

  • OS: Windows 10 (64 bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-3770 @ 3.4 GHz or AMD FX-8350, 4.2 GHz (6 to 8 logical cores minimum highly recommended)
  • Memory: 8GB RAM
  • Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 or AMD Radeon HD 7950
  • Video RAM: 3GB or more

Recommended

  • OS: Windows 10 (64 bit)
  • Processor: i5-8400 @ 2.8GHz or Ryzen 5 1600
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580
  • Video RAM: 4GB or more

Detroit: Become Human continues to be a success for Quantic Dream. In October 2019, the French studio announced on Twitter that the adventure game sold 3.2 million copies globally on PlayStation 4. This is up from the 2 million copies the game shipped in December 2018.

We gave the title a 7/10 in our Detroit: Become Human review, saying, “Detroit is well worth playing, but it struggles to strike the right balance between giving you freedom of choice and reminding you that it’s all a game in the end. Cage and Quantic Dream are getting closer to nailing this style of game, but it’s obvious that there’s still room to grow.”

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Updates Its Playlist With New Modes, Including A Fan Favorite

Infinity Ward has just rolled out a multiplayer playlist update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The update rotates in some new game modes (including an old fan favorite), adds a new map to Ground War, and includes new additions to the shooter’s Hardcore mode.

For starters, Gunfight has now been replaced by Gunfight: OSP, which adds a twist to the small-scale 2v2 mode introduced in this year’s Call of Duty. The setup is much the same, with the key difference being players will have to scavenge weapons on the battlefield as opposed to being provided with a loadout at the start of each round.

The fan-favorite Infected also makes its way to Modern Warfare for the first time. Originally introduced as an April Fool’s joke in Modern Warfare 3, the mode has since become a staple of the series, pitting a randomly selected “infected” player against everyone else. Uninfected players have to avoid or kill the infected, while the infected player has to spread the so-called disease until the uninfected’s player numbers dwindle and there’s eventually no one left.

Both modes will be leaving the game in just over a week on December 18, so make the most of them while you still can.

In addition to Gunfight: OSP and Infected, the playlist update also adds the Aniyah Palace map to Ground War–the large-scale 64 player mode that’s got more than a little Battlefield about it. Aniyah Palace was actually one of the first Ground War maps Infinity Ward showed off prior to Modern Warfare’s release, and it’s finally made its way into the game now. A smaller version of the map was previously available in 10v10 modes, but even then the map felt too big for the player numbers, so it was removed.

Elsewhere, the Hardcore playlist has added Shoot House 24/7, another NVG Moshpit, and a Free For All mode.

Season One of Modern Warfare kicked off last week, bringing with it new content and a 100-tier Battle Pass. It also marked the opening of an in-game store, which has now been stocked with a couple of new cosmetic bundles: Cold Blood and Mother Russia. Activision described both bundles in a blog post, saying, “The ‘Cold Blood’ bundle is fit for a cold and hardened Operator. Pick it up to look fierce in the ‘Winter Warrior’ skin for Golem, take out the competition with the ‘White Out’ handgun weapon blueprint, or take some time with the ‘Precious Commodity’ watch, and more. Get this collection of chill items to look the part of a stone-cold killer.

“Say ‘Dasvidaniya’ to your foes and channel the menacing force of the Red State with the ‘Mother Russia’ Featured Bundle. The bundle includes the ‘Commuter’ Operator skin for Yegor to blend in with the locals, the ‘Old Country’ LMG weapon blueprint for high damage eliminations, the ‘Brass Tactics’ Finishing Move to pummel your enemies, and more. Get the ‘Mother Russia’ bundle for themed goods from the Motherland.”

PlayStation 4 Firmware Update 7.01 Is Out Now

Sony’s final PlayStation 4 firmware update of 2019, version 7.01, has now rolled out for all PS4 users to download. While version 7.00 introduced changes to parties, Remote Play functionality, and Android support, the newest software update doesn’t add any new features.

Version 7.01 comes with the standard “This system software update improves system performance” patch note, likely referring to incremental behind-the-scenes changes that won’t be noticeable to most PS4 users. If you want to play online, however, you will have to download and install the 447.9 MB update.

As we approach 2020, the PS4 won’t be the only Sony console on store shelves for too much longer. While the PS4 continues to sell exceptionally well, the company’s looking ahead at the next-generation of consoles. PS5, officially called the PlayStation 5, has been announced and will arrive holiday 2020 alongside the Xbox Scarlett.

Resident Evil 2 Remake Has Outsold The Original RE2

It’s been a good few years for Capcom and Resident Evil. 2017’s release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard marked a return to form for the long-running survival horror series, with a surprising shift to a first-person viewpoint, while this year’s remake of Resident Evil 2 was also met with critical acclaim–it’s one of GameSpot’s Best Games of 2019.

Capcom has now announced that the high praise from fans and critics alike has led to the Resident Evil 2 remake achieving more than 5 million units in sales as of December 4, 2019. This is significant, because it means the remake has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the original 1998 release of Resident Evil 2, which has sold around 4.96 million units.

That’s still not quite enough to push it into Capcom’s top five best-selling games of all time, as Street Fighter II occupies the fifth spot with 6.3 million units sold. It’s also behind Resident Evil 7 which has sold 6.8 million units as of September 2019. Resident Evil 2 is on its way, though, especially considering it’s been on sale for less than a year.

Capcom will be hoping the recently announced remake of Resident Evil 3 performs just as well. Much like this year’s Resident Evil 2, the Resident Evil 3 remake is a reimagining of the original game, with an over-the-shoulder viewpoint and modernized gameplay mechanics. The 1999 release went on to sell 3.5 million units, so the remake won’t have to sell quite as many units to surpass it. Resident Evil 3 also comes packaged with Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical multiplayer game, and is launching on April 3, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The Doom And Doom 2 Console Ports Are Getting Free DLC, Including Final Doom And Sigil

The recent Switch, PS4, and Xbox One ports of Doom and Doom II are expanding with new free content. Eurogamer is reporting that a recent Doom anniversary livestream revealed that owners of both ports would be receiving a raft of bonus content in the near future, as well as an upcoming patch with a locked 60fps option and an expanded choice of aspect ratio options.

Both Doom games will get Sigil, John Romero’s recent expansion, in a future update. This pack, released for the first time this year, includes nine new single-player levels and nine new multiplayer maps. It’s intended as a fifth episode of Doom. Also coming are the two components of Final Doom, TnT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment, which is made up of another 32 levels. This will dramatically increase the amount of content you’re getting when you buy either Doom or Doom II on consoles.

Doom II will also receive the No Rest for the Living expansion in this update, which is not definitively dated yet. This expansion was first made available in the Xbox Live Arcade version of the game, released in 2010. It consists of an additional nine levels, which will boost Doom II out to a whopping 80 levels total.

These releases got off to a rocky start after their surprise launch in June, with Bethesda soon needing to remove a login requirement that made the games much more difficult to play. Doom 3 is also available on Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, but will not receive these extras.
