Mortal Kombat 11 Update Will Tweak Krypt Economy And Towers Difficulty

Mortal Kombat 11 is now available, and already NetherRealm has announced it plans to address one of the most common criticisms raised by reviews. An incoming hot fix will adjust the Krypt and Towers of Time to make them feel more rewarding and less difficult, respectively.

A tweet from studio head Ed Boon recapped the news from the Kombat Kast. It says that the update will address “those super hard Towers of Time as well as better rewards/economy to be used in the Krypt.” He added that the studio is aiming to have it done within hours rather than days, so depending on when they crack it open, even day-one players may never see these frustrating elements.

Many reviews agreed that the Krypt and Towers were one surprising weak spot in an otherwise standout fighting game. GameSpot’s review-in-progress addressed the problematic live content as well.

“I’ve only seen four days worth of Towers during the pre-release review period, so their behavior and difficulty may well change in the future,” critic Edmond Tran wrote. “I’ll continue to monitor the challenge varieties in the Towers Of Time during the week of launch to see whether the feeling of overwhelmingly unbalanced odds continues. While MK11’s “Premium” microtransaction store wasn’t live during the review period, the reliance on Konsumables to help even the odds in Towers Of Time, as well as the random nature of their acquisition, certainly makes me curious as to how you’ll be able to spend the game’s virtual currency, ‘Time Krystals,’ when the store goes live.”

The final Kombat Kast also announced the last playable character, Frost. She’s a hidden character who doesn’t appear on the main roster, and is unlocked as you progress through the story mode. She joins an already lengthy roster of Mortal Kombat veterans, recent additions like the Kombat Kids, and new characters including Geras and Cetrion.

Fortnite And Avengers: Endgame Event Teased To Have Another Iconic Weapon

Epic began teasing a Fortnite crossover event with the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, releasing an image that showed a character donning Captain America’s iconic shield. Now another piece of famed superhero equipment has been shown off: Thor’s enchanted axe, Stormbreaker.

Like the first teaser, this one quotes the “Whatever it takes” tagline from Endgame and gives a release date of April 25, along with the #FortniteXAvengers hashtag. We see less of the figure this time around, instead just barely seeing the hand clutching the axe. It stands to reason, though, that the event will let players use equipment like Cap’s shield and Stormbreaker, likely in a special limited-time mode.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor’s hammer was broken during the events of Thor: Ragnarok. He needed a new weapon to channel his power against Thanos, so he made a special trip to a star forge and helped to craft Stormbreaker. But when it finally came time to use the powerful new weapon, he struck Thanos in the chest, leaving the villain conscious enough to fulfill his plan to decimate half the population of the universe. Whoops!

This will be the second Fortnite crossover event with the MCU. The first introduced a limited-time mode that allowed you to equip the fabled Infinity Gauntlet (which would crash into the map early in a match) and turn into Thanos. But it was so strong that it got nerfed almost immediately.

Avengers: Endgame is releasing on April 26, though some screenings will take place the evening of April 25. Spoilers have started to leak on the Internet, so be sure to follow our very practical advice on how to avoid spoilers in the meantime. Meanwhile, Fortnite is also teasing its next seasonal changeover in-game, with several runes that have begun to slot into a vault at the bottom of Loot Lake.

Halo Infinite Dev Responds To Battle Royale Rumors

Will the Halo franchise follow the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield into the battle royale space? It doesn’t seem like it.

Halo franchise boss Frank O’Connor said recently that the multiplayer modes for Halo Infinite available at launch are not 100 percent locked in yet, but what he can say for sure is that battle royale will not be among them. Writing on ResetEra, O’Connor’s statement came in response to a video from noted Microsoft insider Brad Sams who said 343 was in the early development stages of a battle royale mode for Halo Infinite.

“We will not talk about the launch content of Halo Infinite until we’re ready,” O’Connor said. “I haven’t watched the video so if I am misinterpreting the headline as ‘Halo Infinite is launching with/as a Halo Battle Royale mode’ that is still not the case,” he said. “You can probably make your own Battle Royale mode in Forge even right now though. It’s a mode not a genre. And all the variants out there now are in my opinion quite radically different from my perspective. Apex vs Fortnite is chalk and cheese–one focuses on movement and map traversal and the other on building and budgeting. Like CTF. BTB Super Fiesta (for example) contains a lot of the shenanigans and emergent fun of that kind of large experience but big sandbox modes are not Battle Royale any more than Oddball is CTF.”

O’Connor joked that Halo Infinite will still have BR–the Battle Rifle, that is. And while Halo Infinite may not have a battle royale mode, O’Connor teased that 343 is looking into “big social modes with loads of organic shenanigans.”

“The launch modes for MP are not 100% defined and are subject to change till quite late in the process–but Battle Rifle will still be there,” he said. “So you can have BR. But are we interested in big social modes with loads of organic shenanigans? Yes. Specifically A blimp full of survivors heading to an Island after a (metaphorical) lecture from Beat Takeshi? No. We are NOT doing this as of now–and no plans to–but Battle Royale could be made for any of the Halo games in MCC or [Halo 5] with some content and scripting additions, because it is a mode. It would have limits based on each engine. I’m pointing that out to be clear that it’s one of the ways we think about gameplay possibilities rather than a single direction for a title.”

Brad Sams, who has accurately reported on many unannounced Xbox endeavours, may be accurate in stating Microsoft has done some work on a Halo battle royale game. Game development is highly iterative. So it might be possible that 343 experimented with battle royale and decided not to pursue it further. Given the enduring appeal of the battle royale genre, it makes sense that Microsoft would at least consider a battle royale mode for Halo Infinite.

The Call of Duty franchise added battle royale with Black Ops 4‘s Blackout mode, while Battlefield V‘s battle royale mode is called Firestorm. These are modes within the games, not standalone experiences like popular free-to-play battle royale games like Fortnite and Apex Legends.

Also in the Sams video, he claims a new trailer for Halo Infinite is being prepared for E3 this June. That would be no surprise, as Halo is one of Microsoft’s tentpole franchises, and we’ve already heard that Halo Infinite will be part of the show. He also responded to the recent claim that Halo Infinite has a $500 million budget. He said he’s heard that the actual budget is “in that region.” Given the sizeable investment, Sams added, “Careers will be made or broken on [Halo Infinite].” As Sams understands it, the reported $500 million budget would cover game development and development costs associated with the brand-new engine, Slipspace, that Microsoft created for Halo Infinite. It’s unclear if marketing costs are included.

A spokesperson for Microsoft told GameSpot about the $500 million budget, “We do not comment on speculation and rumor.”

Halo Infinite is in development for Xbox One and PC; a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

In other Halo news, it was recently announced that Orange is the New Black and American Gods actor Pablo Schreiber will play Master Chief in the Showtime Halo TV series. GameSpot and Showtime are owned by CBS.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Update Coming Tomorrow, Adds New Difficulty Mode

A new update for Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts III is coming soon. As announced on Twitter, the new update is coming during morning hours PT on April 23. It adds the Critical Mode.

If it’s the same as in previous Kingdom Hearts titles, Critical Mode is a new, more challenging difficulty level, above Proud Mode. As IGN reminds us, Critical Modes in previous Kingdom Hearts titles added things like more damage taken and dealt by enemies, and other things. It remains to be seen how Kingdom Hearts III’s Critical Mode varies from past games.

Critical Mode is free for all players; there is no word yet as to exactly when in the morning PT time the update will arrive, but keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

Kingdom Hearts III launched back in January for PS4 and Xbox One. The game quickly shipped more than five million copies, making it the fastest selling game in the series.

GameSpot’s Kingdom Hearts III review score the game an 8/10.

“What sticks with me is the exciting battle against elemental titans with Hercules, taking Rapunzel out into the unfamiliar wide world for the first time, snapping selfies with Winnie the Pooh, and going toe to toe with Davy Jones,” critic Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot’s review. “In 2002, as Sora, I left Destiny Islands to travel across the universe and make new friends. In 2019 I brought old ones home, and I had so much fun doing it.”

Days Gone Soundtrack Is Out Now

The next big PlayStation exclusive game, Days Gone, arrives this week, and ahead of that, the action-adventure games’ official soundtrack has been released. The 25-song soundtrack features music by Nathan Whitehead, who also did the music for movies like The Purge, Keanu, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

The soundtrack also features artists like Jack Savoretti, Billy Raffoul, and Zander Reese, while singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi is featured with the song “Days Gone Quiet.”

“The ideas that define the score are the tenacity of the human spirit and the value of relationship,” Whitehead said in a release.

Whitehead worked with Sony Bend creative director John Garvin on the music. Garvin told Whitehead that the theme of Days Gone the game is not just about surviving, but also why people like main character Deacon want to survive in the first place.

“When I heard that, I was instantly excited about all the places the music could go,” Whitehead said. “I found it really interesting to be navigating the survival aspect and also this introspective aspect at the same time. The Pacific Northwest setting is absolutely beautiful and it really felt like the score needed to connect to this environment as well. Deacon and the environment seemed to call for an organic, lived-in sound with a touch of Americana.”

Days Gone follows the story of a bounty hunter named Deacon St. John, who travels through the Pacific Northwest in a world two years removed from a “global pandemic.”

Days Gone launches on April 26. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

New Sekiro Patch Coming Tonight, Gives Shinobi Tools And Combat Arts A Buff

From Software is rolling out a new update for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Patch 1.03 patch is scheduled to go live across PS4, Xbox One, and PC today, April 22, at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET. Along with addressing a handful of bugs, the update will make an assortment of balance tweaks aimed at improving the usability of the game’s various combat options.

According to From Software, the purpose of this patch is primarily to “encourage usage and diversity of approach” when taking on Sekiro’s fearsome enemies. To that end, the developer has improved the efficiency and Spirit Emblem cost of a handful of Shinobi Tools, including the Lazulite Sacred Flame and various Loaded Axes. Likewise, a handful of Combat Arts, such as Ashina Cross and Dragon Flash, have also had their efficiency and Spirit Emblem cost adjusted.

Beyond those changes, From Software has adjusted the stats of a few bosses, among them Blazing Bull, whose Posture and Vitality have been “slightly” reduced. Divine Confetti drop rates have also been increased, while the price to buy information from Anayama the Peddler has been reduced. You can see the full list of changes in the patch notes below and on the official Sekiro website.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice launched toward the end of March and has proven to be a big commercial success for From Software and Activision. The game debuted at the top of UK’s sales charts, and Activision touted that it managed to sell more than two million copies across PS4, Xbox One, and PC in its first 10 days of availability.

The game has also been a critical success for the companies. GameSpot awarded it a 9/10 in our Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice review, with critic Tamoor Hussain writing, “More so than in previous games, From Software has honed in on the inherent tension found in the challenging nature of its games, and uses it to incredible effect. Sekiro marries the developer’s unique brand of gameplay with stealth action to deliver an experience that is as challenging as it is gratifying.”

Sekiro Update 1.03 Patch Notes

Improvements to Strategic Approaches

  • Adjusted the efficiency and Spirit Emblem cost of the following to encourage usage and diversity of approach:
    • Prosthetic Tools: Lazulite Sacred Flame, Loaded Axe series, Sparking Axe, Lazulite Axe
    • Combat Arts: Ashina Cross, Dragon Flash, One Mind, Floating Passage, Spiral Cloud Passage, Mortal Draw, Empowered Mortal Draw

  • Reduced the Posture damage dealt by the first hit of the Combat Arts “Senpou Leaping Kicks” and “High Monk” as it was causing more damage than intended in certain cases. Posture damage dealt in the latter-half of the combo has been increased.
  • Increased the Poison build-up dealt by the Prosthetic Tool “Sabimaru” against enemies that were intended to be weak against it.
  • Increased the drop rate of “Divine Confetti” for Fencers in Ashina Castle.
  • Adjusted loading screen tips and tutorial text, as well as adding new text.

Other Fixes

  • Slightly reduced Posture and Vitality of Blazing Bull in order to improve game pacing and balance time in combat.

Mortal Kombat 11’s Final Character Is So Cool

Mortal Kombat 11 launches this week, following months of NetherRealm slowly teasing out the full character roster a character or two at a time. With the launch so close, the studio revealed one more surprise inclusion, a hidden character who can only be accessed by progressing through the story campaign: Frost.

A character debut trailer gives Frost her moment to shine with some banter against her mentor, the series’ other ice-themed character, Sub-Zero. Then the two get down to whacking each other around with ice for a while, before we get a little preview of her grisly Fatality animation. You might say she gives him some wicked brain freeze. Haha! (But seriously it’s very gross.)

Frost has been in several games since her introduction in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, but this is her first time as a playable character since the series reboot in 2011. She’s made cameos and NPC appearances in this new continuity, but this is the first time players can get their icy grip on her for themselves.

Mortal Kombat 11 is getting high marks ahead of its imminent release. GameSpot’s own review-in-progress found some spots a little weak, but gave it high praise on the whole.

“MK11 isn’t just a sequel for series fans and Netherrealm devotees, it’s a gateway into the realm of fighting games for anyone who has a passing interest in watching ruthless warriors beat each other silly,” critic Edmond Tran wrote. “Streamlined mechanics keep the act of fighting furiously exciting no matter what your skill level, and comprehensive tutorials encourage you to dig into the nitty-gritty. There’s a diverse roster of interesting characters and playstyles, and the story mode is an entertaining romp. The unfulfilling approaches to the game’s dynamic single-player content and progression may feel like they’ve totally whiffed (at least at this early stage), but Mortal Kombat 11 hits where it matters.”

Check out our pre-order guide for more details while you wait for the bone-crunching to get started.

Mortal Kombat 11 Review Roundup

This week marks the release of Mortal Kombat 11, the latest entry in NetherRealm’s brutal fighting series. Even after nearly a dozen iterations, Mortal Kombat remains one of the most beloved franchises in gaming, and its newest installment is perhaps the most ambitious yet, featuring an expansive roster, a wealth of customization options, and a time-bending story–orchestrated by the first major female antagonist in the series’ history, Kronika–that unites past and present versions of characters.

The narrative in particular is one of the standout elements of the game. “Watching the character interactions between young and old selves [is] a highlight, and with the exception of a somewhat flat Sonya Blade, the solid performances are endearingly sincere with some unexpected moments of introspection,” GameSpot’s Edmond Tran wrote in our Mortal Kombat 11 review-in-progress.

Ahead of its release, many other outlets have also begun publishing reviews of Mortal Kombat 11. We’ve collected a sample of them below to give you an overview of what critics have to say about the highly anticipated fighting game. For an even broader look at its reception, be sure to check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

  • Game: Mortal Kombat 11
  • Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch
  • Developer: NetherRealm
  • Release date: April 23
  • Price: $60 / £50

GameSpot — 8/10

“MK11 isn’t just a sequel for series fans and NetherRealm devotees, it’s a gateway into the realm of fighting games for anyone who has a passing interest in watching ruthless warriors beat each other silly. Streamlined mechanics keep the act of fighting furiously exciting no matter what your skill level, and comprehensive tutorials encourage you to dig into the nitty-gritty. There’s a diverse roster of interesting characters and playstyles, and the story mode is an entertaining romp. The unfulfilling approaches to the game’s dynamic single-player content and progression may feel like they’ve totally whiffed (at least at this early stage), but Mortal Kombat 11 hits where it matters.” — Edmond Tran [Full review-in-progress]

IGN — 9/10

“It’s a rare fighting game that hits just about every note as strongly as Mortal Kombat 11 does. Everything from its methodical and deep combat to its fantastically absurd story mode and its rock-solid netcode, right down to its extraordinarily comprehensive tutorial is absolutely exceptional. It’s only when you get into its drawn-out progression that it trips up: the keys to unlocking Mortal Kombat 11’s rich vault of customization options are locked behind the frustratingly gimmicky and grindy barriers of the Krypt and Towers of Time. This series continues to prove that there’s real fighting depth beyond its notoriously gory Fatalities, and this one in particular stands out as a spine-ripping good time.” — Mitchell Saltzman [Full review]

GamesRadar+ — 4/5

“Mortal Kombat 11 struck a rare chord in me where, even after playing twenty hours in a few days, I want to go back and play more. I doubt I’ll be next in line to compete at EVO, but as a casual player who enjoys putting extra time in–I love what NetherRealm Studios has put together.” — Aron Garst [Full review]

US Gamer –3.5/5

“There’s a lot to love in Mortal Kombat 11. It’s a fantastic fighter with a roster of 25 varied characters, tons of customization options, beautiful graphics, and one of the best story modes in a fighting game. It’s a shame that modes like the Krypt and Towers of Time inject annoyance and tedium into what was an excellent experience. The progression is complex and obtuse, when it should be easy and straightforward. MK 11 could been an all-time best, but it’s just a contender.” — Mike Williams [Full review]

Hardcore Gamer — 3.5/5

“Mortal Kombat 11 is the most beautiful game NetherRealm Studios has ever developed that’s backed up with familiar combat honed to perfection over the years. The story may stumble towards the end, but overall is the best narrative ever included in a NetherRealm game thanks to an excellent combination of comedy, emotion, and character-driven moments. Mortal Kombat 11 provides a solid if unremarkable cast of characters to choose from and plenty of ways to customize them. It’s just a pity that much of the activities and rewards revolve so heavily around grinding and microtransactions.” — Kevin Dunsmore [Full review]

Fortnite: Epic Teases Avengers: Endgame Crossover Event Starting This Week

With the latest, and likely biggest, movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the way this week, Epic Games has teased the next crossover event for Fortnite: Battle Royale. Much as it did last year to tie in with the release of Avengers: Infinity War, some kind of event or game mode will debut in Fortnite later this week. A tweet from the game’s account with the hashtag #FortniteXAvengers quotes the “Whatever it takes” tagline of Avengers: Endgame and gives a release date of April 25, the day of the first public screenings for the movie.

The tweet was accompanied by the image you see below, with a Fortnite character holding Captain America’s iconic shield. Epic unfortunately didn’t provide any specific details about what to expect, but it would be a surprise if Cap’s shield doesn’t show up in the battle royale game in some capacity. We might be able to look at how Epic approached last year’s Infinity Gauntlet mode, which did not include any Avengers skins. (If any are added this time, expect them to be premium items on the in-game store, not something added into the current season’s Battle Pass, which is nearing its end.)

That crossover event coincided with Infinity War’s release. The game mode allowed you to equip the fabled Infinity Gauntlet (which would crash into the map early in a match) and transform into Thanos, allowing you to play as the big bad from the MCU. But while you’d expect the Infinity Gauntlet to be strong, it was deemed far too powerful and got nerfed almost immediately, helping to ensure more players would have a fair shake to get their hand on it. Still, this mode allowed Epic to embrace a much different way of playing the game, as instead of the standard battle royale flow, players would rush to get their hands on the Gauntlet’s powers.

The community had suggested that the limited-time mode Infinity Gauntlet mode could come back for Endgame’s release. This teaser doesn’t confirm the return of that LTM to the game, but it does at least show that Fortnite isn’t letting the conclusion of the Infinity Saga pass by unnoticed.

Epic introduced the Infinity Gauntlet mode after the Russo brothers, directors of Infinity War (and Endgame), reached out to the company about the possibility of a collaboration. The two had become fans of the battle royale game during the editing process on IW. These types of crossovers have not been common for the free-to-play battle royale game, although there have been things like an in-game DJ Marshmello concert.

Avengers Endgame is coming on April 26, with some screenings scheduled for the evening of April 25. Spoilers have begun to leak on the Internet, making this a very perilous couple of days for fans who want to be surprised when they see the conclusion of this decade-long story. The film’s directors have politely asked everyone not to spoil the fun for others, but we’ve also put together some practical advice on how to avoid being spoiled.

Meanwhile, Fortnite is preparing for its next big seasonal changeover–marking the end of Season 8 and start of Season 9–with runes that have appeared around the island. Over the weekend they began slotting into chambers in a giant vault underneath Loot Lake, heralding the arrival of something. We’ll just have to wait to find out what. In the meantime, you can keep playing and completing challenges to earn what you can from the current Battle Pass, which will go away once Season 8 ends.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Expands Even Further With The Fate Of Atlantis

The steady stream of post-launch content for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has made the already massive open world game into one of Ubisoft’s largest titles to date. With the upcoming Fate of Atlantis expansion, you’ll now be able to take a break from the world of Ancient Greece and venture out into a new setting that goes even further with its admiration for Greek mythology. Just ahead of the first episode’s launch on April 23, we played through the 8-10 hour DLC, which focuses on the mysterious Atlantis and its larger connection to the Greek underworld.

Following The Legacy of the First Blade expansion, casting a light on one of the earliest assassins in the series, The Fate of Atlantis puts its sights on the fabled lost Isu civilization–otherwise known as the first civilization–which was referenced heavily throughout the main story. In order to access the first episode, titled Fields of Elysium, you’ll first need to finish the Lost Tales of Greece quest Heir of Memories, which acts as a prelude. In Fate of Atlantis, Alexios/Kassandra will unlock a secret portal in the Atlantean ruins on Thera island, transporting the protagonist into the realm known as Elysium–the first of three entirely new areas to explore throughout the new story.

No Caption Provided

Odyssey’s post-launch content has built upon a continuous story, introducing new events and plot details that seem to set the stage for what’s to come in the series moving forward. The DLC’s director, Hugo Giard, reflected on how much it has grown since launch.

“I think we’re up to about eleven title updates at this point, and each of them has brought in the usual bug fixes, but a lot of quality of life improvements,” said the director. “It’s been a lot of fun. Recently we gave players five different slots for gear loadouts, and it’s great to see all that stuff go out along with the new entries in the Lost Tales of Greece series. I was involved in making some of those story packs, including [The Heir of Memories], which leads up to this DLC. This has been the most successful AC I’ve had the chance to work on, and I think it speaks directly to the support that we’ve given to the game post-launch. I think it’s a great way to move forward [for the series].”

In Elysium, your mercenary-turned assassin will rub shoulders with Greek demi-gods and humans co-existing in what appears to be an idyllic world. However, it quickly becomes clear that there’s trouble in the so-called paradise, and you’ll have to pick a side in the ensuing conflict between the humans and the gods, with both sides seeking control of the realm. Throughout the episode, you’ll engage in side-quests, take part in objectives that have that weaken the Greek god Persephone’s influence over Elysium, and witness some unexpected encounters with some familiar faces.

No Caption Provided

The first episode scales gameplay back to fit a more confined setting. With key characters at odds with one another and several regions under occupation, the larger objective in Elysium is to pit each side against one another to suit your needs. Occasionally, the general gameplay can fall back into the tedium and trappings of a familiar open-world title, leading to periods where you have to clear out some by-the-numbers missions and wear down progress meters to see the next story beat. However, the smaller scale of the world makes for a more interesting and digestible space to dive into. In this way, the first episode of Fate of Atlantis comes across in similar vein to classic AC games, and there’s a sense of cause and effect from your choices that feels meaningful for the larger story.

The new location is made all the more interesting by Elysium’s dreamlike mystique. Set in perpetual daytime and with a lush landscape surrounded by an enclosed row of cascading waterfalls, the new area is otherworldly and mysterious when compared to the familiar Greece, which made exploring all the more enticing. It’s easily Odyssey’s most visually pleasing and exciting location to explore, which is saying a lot given how rich in detail Ancient Greece was. Though Elysium is set in a more enclosed space when compared to the expansive size of Ancient Greece, it will allow you to get more accustomed to the area as you make your moves and dismantle the power structure.

Throughout Elysium, you’ll encounter soldiers and elite guards from the first civilization, all of whom possess magical skills and buffs that make them more powerful than the average foe in Greece. One of the more challenging enemies in the realm are the imposing Collasi, statues that only attack once you’ve caused too much chaos in certain areas. Breaking from their docile position, the Collasi are aggressive and highly durable enemies, utilizing both laser attacks and heavy weapons. Though it’s often better to use stealth and finesse your way around encounters to avoid them, you’re still free to use brute force if you want–you’ll eventually gain powerful abilities and loot that can even the odds. Some of your current skills, such as Battlecry of Ares, can be upgraded with first-civ power to amplify their effectiveness, allowing you to wield powerful weapons and conjure up Isu projections to fight off the new enemies.

No Caption Provided

The role-playing aspect of Odyssey is one of the game’s strong suits, and it still plays an important role in Fate of Atlantis. Choices made throughout the first episode will carry over into the next installments, which could potentially lead to some unexpected moments with returning characters. However, the reception Ubisoft received from the second episode of Legacy of the First Blade prompted the developers to be more mindful of the type of situations they to put players in. At the mid-point of the story in the last DLC, you were placed into an intimate relationship with another character, regardless of whatever choice they made prior, resulting in many within the AC community to speak out in protest. This is something that the developers kept in mind while forging the Atlantis DLC, which–as far the first episode goes–keeps most romance options flexible and not necessary for the larger story.

“We make no secret of the problems that arose from the second episode,” said Giard. “I think we dealt with it correctly [in the following updates], but it was disappointing that happened none the less. But at the end of the day, I thought the [story arc] was really fun to be able to see the first Assassin and the Hidden Blade. We weren’t disappointed by it in any way shape or form, but we are more mindful of that going forward.”

No Caption Provided

The Fate of Atlantis gets off to a pleasant start with its first episode. While The First Blade story arc felt more like a side-story, The Fate of Atlantis comes across as an endgame event, offering up a solid opportunity to use some of the more high-end skills and weapons against some challenging foes. Though the first episode doesn’t introduce anything particularly new or innovative, it does set the stage for some interesting events and places to come. It’s been fascinating to see how Odyssey as a game has changed since launch, and the new expansion could prove to be an exciting turning point for the story at large.
