New Mortal Kombat 11 Character, Cetrion, Revealed

Mortal Kombat 11 is only a few weeks away, and developer NetherRealm continues to reveal new characters in the lead up to the game’s launch. Last week, the company gave fans their first look at three returning fighters–Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Jax–during Sony’s inaugural State of Play presentation, and now it’s unveiled a brand-new character named Cetrion.

As we see in her reveal trailer (via Game Informer), Cetrion is an Elder God connected to the Earth, and she’s able to utilize her elemental powers in battle; the trailer showcases her summoning vines from the ground to restrain opponents and conjuring up rocks to pummel foes with. The video ends with a look at one of Cetrion’s Fatalities, which sees her growing to god size and raining down a beam of energy onto a hapless Jade.

Cetrion is the second entirely new playable character announced for Mortal Kombat 11 thus far, following Geras, the loyal servant of MK 11 boss Kronika. Much like Cetrion, Geras also has some elemental powers; he’s able to conjure up objects made of sand–such as a bed of spikes that he can slam his foes onto–and even manipulate time. In addition to the base roster, NetherRealm will release an assortment of DLC characters for MK 11. The developer hasn’t yet announced how many there will be, but we did get our look at the first one during C2E2 last month: Shang Tsung. This time, Tsung’s likeness is based on Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the actor who portrayed the character in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie. Players who pre-order the game will also receive Shao Kahn as a bonus character.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on April 23. We recently had an opportunity to go hands-on with the Switch version at PAX East 2019, and while it was a noticeable visual downgrade, we found the game ran and played perfectly fine on Nintendo’s console. Black Ops 4’s New Blackout Alcatraz Map Now Live On PS4; Xbox One/PC To Follow

The new Blackout map in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, titled Alcatraz, has launched on PS4. Alcatraz is expected to release on Xbox One and PC at a later date.

“Alcatraz is a small island, and that means super fast-paced, frenetically fun fighting,” Treyarch studio design director David Vonderhaar said in a video describing the new map–which can be watched in the tweet linked below. Treyarch producer Miles Leslie added, “And our Zombies players might recognize this, but we’ve handcrafted Alcatraz for the Blackout experience.”

“So as an island, we’ve got 40 players in a Quad configuration,” Leslie continued. “So that’s 10 teams battling it out, but the other big thing is respawns.” The video goes on to explain that, when you die, you can respawn 30 seconds later and redeploy back into the game–but only up to five times.

Unlike the traditional battle royale method of deploying from a drop ship that travels in a straight line at the start of the match, in Alcatraz, you and your team deploy from portals stationed at random points above the island. There’s no collapsing zone wall like on Blackout’s original map either. Zombies seem to be more plentiful as well, roaming throughout the map as opposed to being contained to certain buildings and landmarks.

Alcatraz also borrows the Zombies mode’s weapon wall feature–including predetermined locations where you can buy a firearm. “At these locations, you’re guaranteed to find a new weapon every 30 seconds,” Vonderhaar said.

As opposed to Blackout’s horizontal-focused original map, Alcatraz is more vertical. The center of the island contains a massive landmark called the Cell Block, which provides ample opportunities for attacking, looting, and defending. Surrounding the Cell Block are numerous other landmarks, each one descending in elevation until you get to the island’s coast. Alcatraz provides numerous opportunities for players to ascend or descend, from snaking paths to climbable cliffs. There’s even a tram that provides a direct path for you and your team to go from Alcatraz’s outskirts straight to the Cell Block.

Until April 30, Blackout is free on all platforms, allowing you to try out Black Ops 4’s battle royale mode on both maps.

Sekiro Endings Guide: How To Get Them All

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is full of sidequests and paths that aren’t strictly necessary to complete the game. Follow those paths and complete those quests, however, and you can unlock different endings for the game. Some come down to a simple choice at a key moment, while others require several extra steps in order to complete them.

Unlocking each of Sekiro’s endings is worth the effort, though. They don’t just show you a different possible conclusion for the game–they also give you more insights into its overall story and lore, suggesting things about who’s behind the attack on Ashina, what the deal is with the Sculptor, and how things got to be the way they are in the country. Plus, one ending lets you get some payback on that giant white snake.

Unfortunately, the ending requirements in Sekiro aren’t always super obvious. The two that are toughest to get (and could be called the “best” endings) are full of unlockable conversations and events that require you to visit people several times. It’s very easy to miss a step or go too far in the story and lock yourself out of an ending.

All the information you need to see all four of Sekiro’s endings is in the guide below. We walk you through what each one requires. Some of the steps can be completed before you do your first boss fight at the top of Ashina Castle, so feel free to explore; but make some cannot be completed after you’ve finished the Fountainhead Palace, so keep that in mind.

Shura Ending

The first and easiest ending to nab is also what might be considered the “bad” ending–it’s certainly the darkest. You can kick it off when the game sends you back to Ashina Castle for the second time. After you battle through a mess of Shinobi, you’ll head to the top of the castle, where you’ll run into someone you thought was dead: Owl, the Shinobi who found and trained Sekiro as a child.

You last encountered Owl in the Hirata Estates level, where he seemingly died in the attack. But it turns out that Owl orchestrated the attack on Hirata and Ashina Castle. When you find him atop Ashina Castle, Owl commands you to join him and follow the Iron Code, turning against the Divine Heir. If you choose to help Owl, you’ll face some new boss fights you won’t get in any of the other endings, but the game is pretty much over right here, so you might want to save this one for a second playthrough.

Immortal Severance Ending

This one’s the most straightforward of the endings, requiring you to follow the Divine Heir’s instructions to complete the game. When Owl asks you to obey the Iron Code, instead choose to remain loyal to the Divine Heir. You’ll have a boss fight with Owl, and then finish the Kuro’s plan to sever his immortality.

That requires you to go on to the Divine Realm and retrieve Dragon Tears. It all culminates in another battle in the Silvergrass Fields near Ashina Reservoir, the same place you fought Genichiro at the start of the game. Complete the boss fight there to kick off the ending.

Purification Ending

The path to the Immortal Severance ending includes some dialogue about another item you need to save Kuro from the Dragon’s Heritage: an Everblossom branch. Unfortunately, as you’ll learn from Emma, the tree in Ashina that produces the blossom has withered. There’s seemingly no way to get it.

You can, in fact, track the blossom down, but the steps are intricate. It requires getting some information and triggering a handful of conversations with various people. Start by refusing Owl in Ashina Castle, then talk to Kuro about gathering the Dragon Tears. When you leave, head to the watchtower where you met Isshin Ashina after defeating Genichiro. You’ll see Emma there–from outside, eavesdrop on their conversation.

Head back to Kuro (you might need to rest at the nearby idol) and talk to him again. He’ll give you a rice ball, and if you read the description, you’ll get the suggestion that something’s weighing heavily on Kuro’s mind. Go behind the screen at the back of the room and you’ll get the chance to eavesdrop on Kuro as he talks to himself.

If Emma’s in the room, talk to her, and if she’s not, rest until she shows up again. She’ll suggest that you need to do something for Kuro, to which you should agree; rest and talk to her again, and she’ll again bring up the Everblossom. Emma mentions the nobles who brought the Everblossom to Ashina to ruminate on how to solve the problem.

Rest again and head down to the Old Grave location in Ashina Castle. You can get there by going inside the castle and dropping down (there’s now a Chained Ogre where the Sabimaru was, so be aware of that), where you’ll open a door that leads to out behind the castle. If you’ve been back here before, you would have found Blackhat Badger, a merchant from whom you can buy the Iron Fortress umbrella prosthetic.

Head left from the exit door to find the graves. Talk to Emma again here, then use the Sculptor’s Idol to travel to the Dilapidated Temple. Emma will be here, talking to the Sculptor. Go around behind the temple to get another chance at eavesdropping.

Now talk to Emma again and she’ll give you another offering bell, which you can use to get back to Hirata Estate by using it on the Buddha statue in the temple.

Fight your way through the Estate again–you’ll deal with some tougher versions of fights you saw earlier, including Juzou the Drunkard. When you get to where you fought Lady Butterfly, you’ll have another battle on your hands: the Owl. He’ll be a lot tougher than the version you fought on Ashina Castle thanks to being younger. If you defeat him, you’ll get the Everblossom you need.

After that, continue through the rest of the game until you reach the final fight in the Silvergrass Field. When prompted, use the Everblossom on Kuro at the end of the game to unlock the ending.

Return Ending

This is the ending that requires the most stuff, but also seems to be the best available option. Note that you need to complete all the steps before defeating the Divine Dragon in the Fountainhead Palace. Once you do that, you can’t get everything you need for this one.

First, you’ll want to complete the Senpou Temple area. You can get to the very end of the level before fighting Genichiro, and you do that, you’ll find the Temple’s leader sitting in front of the large Buddha statue inside. Talk with him and he’ll give you the Holy Chapter: Infested text. If you have already defeated Genichiro, the monk won’t be in the temple, but you can still find the text in a pond in the Temple Grounds area. You’ll need the ability to dive underwater to get it, though, so continue through the game until you defeat the Corrupted Monk in Mibu Village.

Take the text to the Inner Sanctum of the Senpou Temple, where you met the Divine Child (if you haven’t beaten Genichiro at Ashina Castle yet, go do that, then progress through the story for a bit). Take the rice she offers and eat it (or give it to the Old Woman you’ll find in Senpou Temple and Sunken Valley).

Once you’ve taken a couple of batches of rice, you’ll tire the Divine Child out, and she’ll ask you for a persimmon. You can buy one from the Memorial Mob merchant in the Shugendo area near Senpou Temple, or earn one by killing the enemies in the Senpou Temple area. You’ll also get one as a reward for completing Kotaro’s sidequest–he’s the guy you find when you first enter the Senpou area, who asks for a white flower, and then asks for you to spirit him away. If you hit him with the Divine Abduction prosthetic, you’ll find him in the Hall of Illusion, and he’ll give you the Taro Persimmon.

After the Child has a persimmon, talk to her again. She’ll give you more rice, and if you keep prompting her, she’ll give you rice for Kuro. Take it to him and he’ll make a rice ball out of it, which you can then eat or save for later. Return to the Inner Sanctum and you’ll find the Child is gone; find her in the Hall of Illusion and talk to her again.

Now the Child tells you that there was another text that went with the Infested text you brought her earlier. She says the leader of the Senpou Temple has it, and you can find him in the cave behind the temple. Head into the cave until you hit the part where you can drop down. Pull a 180 and swim beneath the wall where you just dropped down, then follow the path to the end. You’ll see a bunch of gray statues that look like skeletal monks, plus one who’s still wearing vibrant clothes. Check that last one to find the text the Divine Child was referring to, which you can bring back to her.

Rest and talk to the child again and she’ll tell you what you need: two fruits from the Great Serpent. That’s the giant snake you’ve dealt with a few times. Attaining the fruits will take you off the beaten path a bit, and you’ll need to have earned the Puppeteer Ninjutsu kill by working your way through the story.

First, head to Senpou Temple, near the entrance to the Abandoned Dungeon, where you talk to Kotaro. If you head down and to the right from the entrance, you’ll find a crank with a kite and a diminutive Senpou assassin–one of those short guys with the round hats. Use the Puppeteer skill on the little guy and he’ll crank out the kite for you. Now head up the mountain to where you find the huge tree. Climb up on it and you’ll see the kite, which is now a point you can grapple to, carrying you across to the far side of the ravine.

If you’re facing where you just came from, look for spots where you can climb down to the left (you should see snake skin hanging from trees along the way). Keep moving until you hit a cave entrance with a Sculptor’s Idol. Push through until you hit the other side, where you’ll find a big wood beam that you can walk out onto. If you look down, you should see the Great Serpent coiled around an outcropping (if you don’t, keep progressing the story until you’ve found the snake in the Sunken Valley). You’ll get a prompt to target it; jump down and perform a deathblow and you’ll grab the Fresh Fruit.

The Dried Fruit can be found in the Sunken Valley, near the Memorial Mob merchant there. Start at the Riven Cave Sculptor’s Idol and head out onto the snowy cliffs, where you start to see the statues. Jump down and grapple on a tree below; you’re headed for the valley floor to the right, where you’ll find a big flat stump and a cave entrance that houses the merchant. Continue into the cave, past the snake’s body, until you can’t progress any further; you’ll be blocked by the Great Serpent searching for you, and you can hug the wall of a stone pillar nearby. From here, drop down on the left side of the area, where the snake isn’t looking. Keep moving forward until you find a monkey here. Backstab it with Puppeteer and it’ll climb up and dance around to get the snake’s attention, allowing you to quickly grapple over and run into the temple beyond. Inside is the Dried Fruit.

Take both fruits back to the Inner Sanctum and give them to the Divine Child. You’ll need to let some time pass, so rest, check the door, and rest again. The Child will now have the Frozen Dragon Tear to give you. From here, you’re set to continue on to the Fountainhead Palace, then complete the rest of the game as usual, through the fight in the Silvergrass field. When prompted at the end, use the Frozen Tears to unlock the Return ending.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Online Update Adds New Showdown Mode

Rockstar has rolled out another content update for Red Dead Redemption 2‘s multiplayer component, Red Dead Online. This week, the developer has introduced a new Showdown mode called Up in Smoke, as well as a limited-time bonus on Ability Cards and an assortment of new clothing options to buy.

As its name suggests, the object of Up in Smoke is to blow up the opposing team’s camp. Each player will begin the match with an explosive package that they’ll need to deliver to the enemy’s base. Every time the explosives are successfully delivered, a portion of the camp will be destroyed until one team’s base has been completely razed.

In addition to the new Showdown mode, Rockstar is giving players a 30% XP boost on all Ability Cards this week in Red Dead Online, allowing you to level the cards up to a new tier faster. A new selection of clothing has also been added to the Wheeler, Rawson and Co. Catalogue. Starting this week, players will be able to purchase the following:

  • Winter Shotgun Coat
  • Benbow Jacket
  • Darned Stockings
  • Manteca Hat

Rockstar has been steadily releasing new content for Red Dead Online over the past few months. Last week, the developer introduced Target Races, which have players racing through a track while firing at targets along the way. Thanks to Rockstar’s timed exclusivity agreement with Sony, PS4 players also received early access to Open Target Races.

There are more updates planned for Red Dead Online in the near future. Later this spring, Rockstar will release a big update that addresses griefing and makes other changes. The developer also has another Showdown mode called Plunder on the way, as well as new Land of Opportunities missions, additional Free Roam missions, and more.

BioWare Responds To Report Detailing Anthem’s Troubled Development

BioWare has issued a statement regarding the development of Anthem, in response to an article that explored development troubles that may have contributed to its rocky launch. The response explains its rationale for not participating in the story, addresses some of the criticisms, and rebukes what it suggests is some team members “tearing down one another.”

The spark behind the response was an expose published on Kotaku. It spoke with several developers that either worked on the game or are familiar with the conditions around its development. Their stories included first-hand accounts of stress and burnout, as well as troubles adapting the Frostbite engine and purported warnings to management that went unheeded. BioWare itself chose not to engage with the article, but the statement makes very clear that the expose is what prompted the response.

“We’d like to take a moment to address an article published this morning about BioWare, and Anthem’s development,” the statement reads. It then says it stands behind all of the developers who worked on the game, and that was why it abstained from participating. “We chose not to comment or participate in this story because we felt there was an unfair focus on specific team members and leaders, who did their absolute best to bring this totally new idea to fans. We didn’t want to be part of something that was attempting to bring them down as individuals. We respect them all, and we built this game as a team.”

The statement goes on to give BioWare’s positions on building a healthy workplace culture, and says it will be looking at stress company-wide in feedback and team surveys. It also says that the team collectively accepts criticisms, but also issues a pointed criticism that appears aimed at those who spoke to Kotaku for the article.

“We don’t see the value in tearing down one another, or one another’s work,” it reads. “We don’t believe articles that do that are making our industry and craft better.”

For his part, the expose’s author, Jason Schreier, noted on Twitter that BioWare’s response was written before they could have read the article.

Anthem has suffered from a host of problems since launch, including middling reviews, crash bugs, and refund requests. BioWare has even openly acknowledged the rough launch. Still, BioWare is planning several updates and making quality-of-life quality-of-life adjustments. The game had a strong sales debut, so BioWare has every reason to continue supporting it.

Destiny 2 Ascendant Challenge Week 1 Location (April 2-9): Where To Go And What To Do Guide

The Iron Banner might have ended in Destiny 2, but there’s still a lot of stuff to chase in the Jokers Wild expansion. With pinnacle weapons to chase, the allegiance mission to complete, Gambit Prime competitions to win, and the upcoming Revelry spring event, there are plenty of reasons to keep climbing toward the Power level cap. As always, a new weekly Ascendant Challenge can help you do that.

As players have come to expect, the Ascendant Challenge starts out with acquiring the corresponding bounty from Petra in the Dreaming City. You’ll also need a Tincture of Queensfoil, a consumable item you can earn by taking part in certain activities in the Dreaming City (or you can outright buy one). Once you have both the bounty and a Tincture, you’ll head to a Lost Sector, Aphelion’s Rest, which is located in The Strand, just beneath the area where Petra is sometimes found. Using a Tincture will grant you a buff, Ascendance, that allows you to see a Taken portal. This one is located partway through the Lost Sector, atop a hill–it’s hard to miss if you’ve used your Tincture.

Jumping into the portal takes you to the Ascendant Plane’s Ouroborea. There, you’ll have to explore the area to find four different blights. Enter the dome and destroy its core; you’ll know you’ve done it when it disappears and the text “a seal breaks” pops up in the bottom-left corner. Once you’ve dealt with all the blights, you’ll go back toward the center to destroy crystals (whose protective shield has been temporarily dropped). Just beware the knights who will chase you around as you do this–your best bet is to keep moving in a circle, which should let you destroy the crystals without allowing the knights to get too close.

Although the chest is unlikely to have much in the way of worthwhile rewards, finishing the Ascendant Challenge also completes the bounty you picked up from Petra. That rewards you with a piece of Powerful gear that is highly desirable and can increase your level, making this all worth the trouble, provided you’re capable of getting it done. With The Black Armory expansion in full swing, players are back to the gear grind to get to the new level cap of 650.

Although this Ascendant Challenge is not a new one, there is a lot happening in Destiny 2 right now. Niobe Labs means the fourth of The Black Armory’s new Forges to unlock, as well as a new step in the Mystery Box Exotic quest we’ve been tracking since the expansion released last month.

There are actually five new Exotic weapons in The Black Armory to find, four of which we know about (and one of which we can take a guess at). There’s also a lot more happening in January and beyond: Bungie laid out its content calendar for the rest of Year 2, which is pretty extensive.

Fortnite Patch Notes (Content Update 8.20): New Bow And More

Fortnite has updated with another weapon and the return of a popular limited-time mode, along with some bug fixes. The patch notes for Content Update 8.20 comes just after a hotfix to address issues that were introduced in the initial 8.20 patch in late March.

The big new draw for many players will be the new Boom Bow weapon. As you might expect, it’s a bow with shotgun shells on its arrow tips, so those will explode upon impact. For that reason it uses shotgun ammo, and holding fire to increase your draw strength will increase both the arrow’s speed and the damage from impact. Explosive damage will be consistently set at 100 regardless. Save The World mode gets its own new weapon as well, the Cannonade Launcher.

The update also marks the return of the Sniper Shootout LTM. This mode limits weapons to sniper rifles only, and reduces Floor Loot spawners by 50% and deactivates reviving “Down But Not Out” teammates in Duos and Squads.

The new update also introduces some bug fixes for Arena. It fixes issues with divisions in Duos, including players being unable to queue and some players not being properly promoted, and some players being charged the incorrect Bus Fare. Creative Mode has lots of its own additions too.

V8.20.1 Resolved Issues

On March 29 we released a client update to fix some issues that appeared in the v8.20 update. Find all the details on which issues were resolved below!

Battle Royale

  • Fixed an issue where spectator numbers would not update, even after the spectator had left the game.
  • Fixed an issue that caused players to be unable to queue in the correct division level in the Arena game mode when the party leader was in a lower division.
  • Fixed an issue which caused the Poison Dart Trap to be hidden behind certain wall assets.
  • Fixed an issue where trap placement on walls would be blocked if a stair structure was attached to the wall.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from getting removed from the Baller when hit by a Boogie Bomb.
  • Fixed an issue preventing friend invites from displaying in the social panel.

Creative

  • Fixed an issue where Creature Spawners wouldn’t activate within the correct range after it has been resized.
  • Fixed an issue where the Phone Tool would emit two beams rather than one after copying multiple times.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented non-damaging traps (Ice Block, Bouncers, etc) from functioning if the Game was not started.
  • Fixed an issue where any Baller vehicle that was placed on an Island prior to v8.20 could not use the boost.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented vehicles from being damaged by Music Sequencer when damage was turned on.

Save the World

  • Re-enabled the X Marks the Spot sub-objective.
  • Fixed an issue where the X Marks the Spot objective was removing items from player inventories.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing B.A.S.E to incorrectly hover over player built structures.

Another Persona 5 Announcement Teased For April, And It’s Not P5R

Persona 5 developer Atlus has announced it will be revealing something on April 25. A website confirming the date of the reveal has appeared online, but there’s no indication as to what the studio will be talking about. Intriguingly, the website has “P5S” in its URL.

Atlus has already announced a new version of the RPG for PS4 called Persona 5 The Royal, but this has its own website with “P5R” in the URL. This suggests that P5S is something separate from the PS4’s Persona 5 The Royale. Much of the speculation for what it could be has been around a Nintendo Switch version of Persona 5, and the “S” in the URL no doubt fuels that fire.

Thus far, Persona 5 has only been released on PlayStation hardware. Alongside the PS4 version, however, there’s a PS3 version, which could be suitable for porting to the Switch. Additionally, Atlus and Nintendo are already working together to bring Joker, the protagonist of Persona 5, to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC.

In February, Nintendo confirmed it is working on update 3.0 for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but didn’t say what it’ll include. Nintendo added that Joker would be available for the game before the end of April. With this in mind, the use of “1 More” on the website could also be significant. In Persona 5 the phrase is used when a player is given an opportunity to make an extra move as a bonus. Either way, we’ll find out later this month.

Persona 5 originally launched in March, 2017 and received a 9/10 from GameSpot. In her Persona 5 review, Lucy James said, “Within Persona 5 is a complex set of interconnected gameplay mechanics, and in almost every aspect Atlus has executed on its vision exceptionally, barring the pacing issues towards the end.”

She continued: “It’s stuffed to bursting point with gameplay ideas and presentation flourishes–there’s an overwhelming level of artistry in every part of Persona 5, making it a truly standout entry in the series. It’s a refined, effortlessly stylish RPG that will be talked about for years to come.”

Assassin’s Creed 3 Removed From Steam, Uplay

Following the launch of Assassin’s Creed III Remastered last month, it appears publisher Ubisoft has delisted the original game from PC retailers such as Steam and Uplay. The game’s Steam page is still visible, but states, “At the request of the publisher, Assassin’s Creed III is no longer available for sale on Steam.”

Assassin’s Creed III Remastered is of course available for purchase for $40 / £34 / AU $60, but unlike the original version this does not include the game’s multiplayer portion. GameSpot has reached out to Ubisoft to confirm why the original version was removed.

It should be noted the delisting does not prevent existing owners of Assassin’s Creed III from downloading or playing the game–it merely prevents anyone else from purchasing it. Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, meanwhile, is included in the season pass for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

After launching on PS4, Xbox One, and PC at the end of March, Assassin’s Creed III Remastered is making its way to Nintendo Switch on May 21. The original game, meanwhile, was first released for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Wii U in 2012. We awarded it an 8.5/10 in our Assassin’s Creed III review; critic Kevin VanOrd said it “expands the series’ gameplay in enjoyable and sensible ways.”

He added: “Assassin’s Creed III is a big game that gives you a lot to do, some of which is fleshed out relatively well, and some of which isn’t. It is not, however, content to rest on the series’ laurels. It takes chances with its opening, with its story, and with its characters.
