Cyberpunk 2077’s Setting Will Be A “Unique Take” For The Franchise

While creating Night City, the setting for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red wanted to create a “unique take” on the Cyberpunk franchise. This is why the upcoming RPG takes place in a primarily sunny locale as opposed to the gloomy, rain-soaked settings traditionally seen in the cyberpunk genre.

“When we showed the demo last year, people were surprised at first that it was so sunny,” Cyberpunk 2077 concept art coordinator Marthe Jonkers said in an interview with GamesIndustry.Biz. “They expected rainy, dark cyberpunk but you can make a cyberpunk city in California. Of course, it will rain there, because we have a weather system, and it will also be night, but we are really trying to get this fresh take on cyberpunk.”

Night City is built on the foundation of four distinct visual styles, each of which details the different ages of cultural and social-economic growth in the Cyberpunk universe between 2020 and the events of the game. This creates a very different world in the Cyberpunk universe, one that allows you to instantly recognize when a car was made or how long a certain building has been around just at a glance. “That was really, really important to us, to make a unique take on Cyberpunk,” Jonkers said. “And I really like that when people see screenshots of our game, they recognize it as our style.”

The first era, Entropism, was one of intense poverty, so anything made from that time looks very plain. “The designs from that era are very practical, more about practicality than whether it looks nice or is decorated,” Jonkers said. Entropism was followed by Kitsch, a period of time when the economy recovered in Night City and allowed the low- and middle-class to invest in more colorful and extravagant items. The third era, Neomilitarism, saw the rise of rich corporations, which is where all the tall and sleek skyscrapers come from. Finally, Neokitsch, saw the divide between the rich and poor grow wider–and several members of the wealthy class began adopting the colorful style of the poor, albeit with a more money-centric twist. Think clothes made of animal pelts.

Jonkers goes on to explain that this level of world-building allows CD Projekt Red to tell stories about the people that live in Night City without expositional conversations. “There are layers to the design of Night City and all its inhabitants, so when you drive around and you see a building that’s sort of pink with these soft edges, and the windows are sort of soft shaped, you know that this is kitsch style, and you know that was built in that period of time where people had more money back then,” she said. “It’s telling you a story about the background of the city, and gives an extra layer of believability.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on April 16, 2020.

Pokemon Go: Last Chance To Catch Mewtwo

Pokemon Go‘s final wave of Ultra Bonuses is still live. Not only did it introduce the first Gen 5 Pokemon to the game (as well as a new evolutionary item called the Unova Stone), it also brought the Legendary Mewtwo back to Raids. However, your time to catch the Legendary Psychic-type is running out.

Mewtwo is scheduled to leave the game again at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET on Monday, September 23, so you have until then to encounter it in five-star Raids. This time, the Legendary Pokemon knows the move Psystrike, a Psychic-type attack originally introduced in Pokemon Black and White. That’s not all; you also have a chance of encountering a Shiny Mewtwo while it is still in Raids.

Before it leaves the game once again, Niantic was supposed to hold a Mewtwo Legendary Raid Hour this past Wednesday; due to issues, however, that event had to be postponed. The Raid Hour will now take place on Tuesday, October 8, from 6-7 PM local time, giving you one final chance to catch a Mewtwo that knows Psystrike.

As usual, before you can capture Mewtwo, you’ll first need to defeat it in battle. As a pure Psychic-type, Mewtwo is vulnerable to Ghost, Dark, and Bug Pokemon such as Giratina, Tyranitar, and Scizor, so any of those will prove to be an asset when you challenge it.

In other Pokemon Go news, the game’s Safari Zone event is now underway in Montreal. To celebrate the event, players around the world have a chance of encountering a Shiny Yanma in the wild. Niantic also recently shared the first details for October’s Pokemon Go Community Day. The event takes place on October 12, and the featured Pokemon will be Trapinch, the first form of the Ground/Dragon Pokemon Flygon.

Where Is Xur? Destiny 2 Xur Location And Items Guide (Sept. 20-24)

The release of Shadowkeep is nearly here, but in the meantime, Destiny 2 players can count on Xur for their fix of Exotic weapons and armor. The Exotics merchant has returned once again for one of his final appearances during Year Two. Here’s where to find Xur and what items he’s selling.

Where Is Xur?

This week, Xur is located in the EDZ. Spawn in at the Winding Cove and hop on your sparrow to make your way forward. Xur can be found hanging out on a cliffside just above the road and cave that hug the northernmost part of this area–he’s just to the right of a crashed Fallen ship. Platform your way up the rocks to the right of him to reach him.

What Is Xur Selling?

Xur has a total of four items for sale: one Exotic weapon and one piece of armor for each class. The weapon is The Colony, a grenade launcher that’s fun to use and might be useful to you in Crucible if you’re finally trying to make progress on the Mountaintop quest now that it’s much more doable following a recent update.

As per usual, the armor is probably what you’ll want to take a closer look at. Whereas Exotic weapons are all the same, Exotic armor can feature different perks, so it’s wise to take a close look at the exact rolls on what Xur is selling, even if you already own them on your Hunter, Titan, or Warlock.

Besides the equippable items, Xur has his usual Invitation of the Nine (giving you some objectives to complete in return for a bit more story involving the Nine and a Powerful reward), the Five of Swords challenge card (for modifying Nightfall difficulty–something that will work differently once Shadowkeep launches), and the Fated engram (which decrypts into an Exotic you don’t own from a select pool).

Xur Item Lineup (Sept. 20-24)

  • The Colony (Exotic Grenade Launcher) — 29 Legendary Shards
  • Orpheus Rig (Exotic Hunter Leg Armor) — 23 Legendary Shards
  • Karnstein Armlets (Exotic Warlock Gauntlets) — 23 Legendary Shards
  • Ashen Wake (Exotic Titan Gauntlets) — 23 Legendary Shards

The Colony

The Curse of Osiris-era Exotic grenade launcher is a fun one thanks to its Insectoid Robot Grenades perk. While you can fire the weapon directly at an enemy to deal damage, you can also launch these explosives onto the ground; as the name suggests, these are insectoid robots that will chase after enemies and then explode when they get close.

Orpheus Rig

Hunters eager to use their abilities often should take a look at Orpheus Rig. Through its Uncanny Arrows perk, you’ll get ability energy for each enemy that is tethered by Deadfall anchors. Additionally, you get more shots with Moebius Quiver.

Rolls:

  • Perk 1: Pulse Rifle Dexterity, Traction, Kinetic Dexterity
  • Perk 2: Submachine Gun Scavenger, Special Ammo Finder

Karnstein Armlets

Melee-happy Warlocks will find Karnstein Armlets right up their alley. The Vampire’s Caress perk provides a significant health refill when securing a melee kill, and they’ll continue regenerating health for a short while afterward. Also of note is that one of the rolls this week is Enhanced Grenade Launcher Loader, which should be particularly handy if you’re wielding Mountaintop.

Rolls:

  • Perk 1: Auto Rifle Loader, Light Arms Loader, Enhanced Grenade Launcher Loader
  • Perk 2: Fusion Rifle Scavenger, Special Ammo Finder

Ashen Wake

Titans arguably get the short end of the stick this week, as Ashen Wake only proves useful if you’re using a particular Solar subclass grenade type. Bring the Heat causes Fusion Grenades to explode on impact, rather than after a short delay, and they can be thrown more quickly.

Rolls:

  • Perk 1: Auto Rifle Loader, Pulse Rifle Loader, Impact Induction
  • Perk 2: Rocket Launcher Scavenger, Special Ammo Finder

Untitled Goose Game Dev Explains Epic Games Store Exclusivity Decision

While going Epic Games Store-exclusive can be seen as a shock to some, the team behind Untitled Goose Game has explained why the puzzle-stealth title went down that route. According to developer House House, taking Epic’s offer of exclusivity was a “very easy” choice.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.Biz, House House said partnering with Epic allowed the studio to make a “very safe bet.” House House’s Michael McMaster said he and the studio didn’t want to make any assumptions about Untitled Goose Game’s success solely based on social media buzz, saying it can be “very fickle and success can feel a bit arbitrary at times.”

With Epic’s funding, McMaster concluded that the team was able to “ensure continued sustainability” for House House, giving them the stability to go from part-time to full-time developers. “It’s no secret there’s an incentive to partner with Epic and release with them,” McMaster said. “Being able to sustain our company was a pretty big deal.”

But though Untitled Goose Game is exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC, the studio launched the quirky game on Nintendo Switch as well. In talking to GI.Biz, House House’s Jacob Strasser said the Switch fit the game’s aesthetic, citing PlayStation and Xbox as “a less good place to be an indie at the moment.” McMaster added: “But ultimately, it was just that the Switch is nice and the game is nice and we hope those two things combined can share that warmth or coziness.”

In our Untitled Goose Game review, we said, “It’s a comedy game that focuses on making the act of playing it funny, rather than simply being a game that features jokes. Wishing that it was longer speaks to how much fun I had with it. There’s nothing else quite like Untitled Goose Game; it’s charming and cute despite being mean, and both very silly and very clever. It’s also probably the best non-racing game ever to feature a dedicated ‘honk’ button.”

You Don’t Have To Play A Game Just Because Everyone Is Talking About It…

Variety is the spice of life and the same can be said of playing video games. It’s good to sample what’s out there but, sometimes, it’s also fine to accept that you like what you like and not try and force yourself into playing experiences that you don’t jive with, even if they’re the flavour of the moment and what everyone is talking about.

On this week’s episode of the GameSpot After Dark podcast Kurt Indovina joins Jake, Kallie, and Tamoor to talk about his new show, True Fiction, and also the video games he gravitates towards. Kurt discusses point-and-click adventure games, his love of them, and the journey to accepting that he’ll usually opt for a story-focused experience above all else. Who needs all these new video games when Deadly Premonition just got re-released, right?

Back To The (Gaming) Future

Kurt: I have a thing for Adventure games, specifically point-and-click adventure games.

Jake: We’ve talked about some of these.

Kurt: Yes. I grew up with it embedded in my family, so thankfully I was privileged enough to have a family that was also into gaming.

Tamoor: Favorite point-click adventure game of all time right now go!

Kurt: Well it’s Grim Fandango. But I wouldn’t actually consider Grim Fandango a point-click adventure game

Jake: Have you talked to Ben about this?

Kurt: Oh yeah, actually my first day here in the office, before I was kinda introduced to everybody, I saw the box to Grim Fandango on Ben’s desk, and I was like, “Whose desk is that?” And Lucy was like, “That’s Ben’s” and I just marched right up to him without being introduced to him, and I was like, “Hey, I’m Kurt, you’re Ben, Grim Fandango’s my favorite game of all time.” I see the box on there, and there was like this explosive moment.

Tamoor: And they kissed.

Kurt: And we kissed. And now we have uh, we’re expecting!

Tamoor: Oh, congratulations!

Kurt: I am pregnant. But I mean, Grim Fandango isn’t technically a point-and-click. It’s good old tank controls … my favorite kind of controls. Other than that, there are a lot of great point-and-click games that have come out in recent years that I love, specifically a point-click one being the Dream Machine, I love that game. Went a little under the radar, but it’s a great game, people should know about it. Anyways, adventure games, I have learned to accept that I really love story driven games-

Kallie: What do you mean “learn to accept?”

Kurt: Because there’s this tug-and-war, of what I seek in a game, and what I like in a game, and the difference in… there’s this thing where sometimes I will come to accept in certain games, there’s certain people who don’t like games unless they don’t have action. And action can be defined in many ways, I don’t mean just like violence and shooting. But then there’s this other category of games where it’s more story-driven, or there’s just so many… It’s infinite. And I’ve come to accept over the most recent years of me going out of my comfort zone and playing a series of games, that I otherwise wouldn’t normally gravitate to… For example like Gears of War, even though I did find an appreciation for that game, that wasn’t naturally a game I would like go and seek out and hunt day one. But after like going on this self discovery, journey… type of games. I’ve just learned and accepted that I love narrative, driven, story-driven games. That doesn’t mean just because there’s a story that means I’m gonna like it, of course, but when looking at my favorite games of all time, it’s like Grim Fandango, Deadly Premonition, um… uh… Nine Nine Nine.

Well Nine Nine Nine is up there, I mean Bloodborne is one of my favorite games of all time, and Resident Evil 4 and Half-life 2, and you know- You can talk about Resident Evil 4’s plot in a myriad of ways, but the game still has very good storytelling drive to it.

Jake: It was one of the first, well not one of the first, but it was just that next-level, realistic, cinematic look to it.

Kurt: Oh yes, and I think that’s what it was.

Jake: Especially, cause I remember getting that on GameCube when it first came out and just being blown away by how that game looked and played. And even though the story is kinda nonsense, the presentation there was just so far ahead of its time.

Kallie: There’s a lot of games where the story is nonsense but is still just ace, you know?

Kurt: Yeah, that’s what I meant by “learning.” Yeah, like the things that I truly value and love in games especially as through the past year of exposing myself to as many different games, to try and get out of my comfort zone, and be like “no, this is what I love.” Deadly Premonition is back out and like, this is what I love.

Tamoor: And there is an element of like, feeling that you need to play a certain type of game to be heard, because some conversations are the loudest conversations, and if you wanna be part of, you know, the industry and be part of their conversation, you kind of do… I can understand how people might be pressured to seek out specific types of games. There’s not a massive- like if you go on Twitter right now, chances are it’s more likely they’ll be discussing the latest action game than the indie point-and-click adventure game. And if you want to be part of a conversation, then you’re kind of pushed in that direction. So reaching the stage where you’re comfortable in being like “hey, I just wanna play this kinda game, I know that I like this kind of game. I appreciate the other one, but I’m naturally gonna gravitate towards this. Like accepting that- I think everyone has that to some degree.

Kallie: Yeah, I get what you’re saying now. Like I have that with sim games, or like management sims and stuff like that where you’re like, “I could talk about this all day, but nobody wants to hear me do that.” You know?

Kurt: Ehh, you’d be surprised, I meant there’s a huge audience for that. Like playing control recently was a good, stark reminder for me to be like, “This is the type of game I love.” It has the most brilliant balance of action to story, but really at the root of it, when I walk away from that game, as good and satisfying as action is, I walk away thinking about the narrative, or the lack of, in a way. Like its characters, and the way it builds upon itself through personalities. Replaying Deadly Premonition has reminded me of that. There’s just certain parts in that game where I’m just like, “This is what I love. I love these parts, like these calmer parts maybe.” But there’s always a balance that you need.

Kallie: Yeah, it’s nice to be reminded of that, especially in our jobs, where we do have to play a lot of different things. It’s important for our jobs to get out of our comfort zones sometimes and play games we maybe wouldn’t gravitate towards, but sometimes it’s nice to be like “yeah, this is that shit I do like.”

Tamoor: I walked away from control thinking “DAMN! Professor Darling got abs!”

Borderlands 3 Details Bloody Harvest Halloween Free DLC

In its first Borderlands Show stream, Gearbox has detailed its plans for Borderlands 3 post-launch content, starting with the Halloween-themed event Bloody Harvest.

The free Bloody Harvest update will arrive in late October (naturally) and run for a limited time. Game director Paul Sage said it would last about six weeks. During that time you can collect themed Legendary weapons and skins, and discover spoopy new environments and enemies, all culminating in a wicked boss battle.

To begin the Bloody Harvest content, you’ll need to have ventured off of Pandora and into space. You’ll start finding Haunted enemies roaming the galaxy, which can give you a new “Terror” debuff that obscures your vision and weakens your gun handling, accuracy, and spread. Taking down Haunted enemies earns you Hecktoplasm, which can be handed over a new character aboard Sanctuary named Maurice. That will gain you access to the new Bloody Harvest map.

Once you fight yourself through the creepy crawly Bloody Harvest map, you’ll fight the Baron of Bloody Harvest, a ghostly form of the Captain Traunt boss from the main campaign. New gear to collect will include two new guns and a shield that use the Terror mechanic, a Global weapon skin, weapon trinket, and skins for each Vault Hunter (including Moze’s Iron Bear and FL4K’s pets). Anointed weapon drops will also have a chance to get the Terror debuff.

The stream also revealed the release date for Borderlands 2 VR on Steam, which will drop October 22. The studio promises the next Borderlands Show, to come next month, will reveal more about the next piece of post-launch content, Maliwan Takedown.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Confirmed For PS4 State Of Play

Sony recently announced a PlayStation State of Play stream for September 24. It promised a hefty stream, raising questions about what the company would be showing at the event. Now we know at least one of the games on-deck for the showcase: The Last of Us Part 2 from Naughty Dog.

Naughty Dog tweeted out a teaser with the State of Play label attached. It’s not much to look at, just a worn-looking knife with some floating debris in the background. It’s accompanied by the foreboding line, “I’m gonna find… and I’m gonna kill… every last one of them.” Director of communications Arne Meyer retweeted the teaser thanking fans for their patience, and saying it won’t be long now.

The Last of Us Part 2 has gone quiet for months, with no release date announced yet. The most recent we heard from the game was that behind-closed-doors footage was shown to GameStop managers just before PAX West. That came with a promise that the public would get to see it “soon,” so it may be part of the State of Play presentation.

Nintendo Switch’s Luigi’s Mansion 3 Is Getting Paid DLC

Luigi’s Mansion 3 arrives on Nintendo Switch next month, continuing the system’s string of high-profile releases. This installment takes the cowardly plumber through a haunted hotel called the Last Resort, but it appears that won’t be the end of the adventure; Nintendo’s official website has revealed that the game will also receive some form of paid DLC.

The website doesn’t detail what the Luigi’s Mansion 3 DLC will entail or how much it will cost, but it does confirm it’ll be related to ScareScraper and ScreamPark. “Paid DLC will come to Luigi’s Mansion 3 in the future, adding new content to the ScareScraper and ScreamPark multiplayer modes,” the website reads.

ScareScraper is a returning mode from Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. Here, a team of Luigis must work together to clear increasingly challenging floors of the tower before the time limit expires. ScreamPark, meanwhile, is a new party mode that was first revealed during September’s big Nintendo Direct. In this mode, two teams of four players compete to suck up the most ghosts and collect the most coins.

We had a chance to interview Luigi’s Mansion 3 producer Kensuke Tanabe at E3 2019, and one of the topics we discussed was whether Nintendo was planning on releasing DLC for the game. Despite the structure of the Last Resort lending itself well to new floor being added post-release, Tanabe indicated that was not in the cards for the story mode.

“Because … it’s a hotel structure with multiple floors, I think it would have been possible to add even more floors,” Tanabe said. “But, I think the hardest part of that is not necessarily the act of adding floors, but it’s like … the story is done, so by adding [more floors], how are we going to expand that aspect? Because I want to experience completing the whole hotel and just feel satisfied that it’s done. Adding on new stuff is not really something that gives us that.”

The September Direct also revealed a few of the different areas Luigi will explore in the game. Each floor of the Last Resort is based on a unique theme, and we got a look at the Egyptian-flavored Tomb Suites (complete with sand pits, pyramids, and mummies), as well as the pirate restaurant called the Spectral Catch.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 launches for Nintendo Switch on October 31. We recently had a chance to go hands-on with the game at PAX West and thought its co-op mode was a blast. Fortnite Teases Batman Crossover Event

Fortnite is readying itself for another comic book crossover. The game has teased a “Fortnite x Batman reveal.” The announcement also linked to a stream on YouTube, which is set to premiere on September 21 at 8 AM ET / 5 AM PT.

The word of an official announcement follows a leak from recent Fortnite updates, which revealed the existence of Batman-themed items like the grapnel gun and explosive batarang. That almost certainly means that you’ll be able to collect and play with some of Batman’s wonderful toys, but other changes may be coming as well.

Previous superheroic events have let you use the Infinity Gauntlet or don some of the most famous Avengers gear. Other pop culture crossover events in Fortnite have included John Wick, Borderlands, and Stranger Things. Not coincidentally, the reveal date will fall on “Batman Day,” the annual event started by DC Comics to mark the Caped Crusader’s publication anniversary.
