Shooter, Real-Time Strategy Form A Hectic Mix In Disintegration

From the big cinematic trailer revealed at Gamescom, it’s not immediately apparent exactly what V1 Interactive’s first game, Disintegration, actually is. The trailer highlights a futuristic, bulky hovering vehicle called a grav-cycle that you’ll be piloting, and its first-person shooter pedigree gives some clues–it’s headed up by Marcus Lehto, a co-creator of the Halo universe. It turns out that Disintegration is more than just another futuristic FPS, though. It mixes in elements of the real-time strategy genre to become a hectic hybrid, requiring you not just to land your headshots, but to use your head, as well.

At Gamescom, we played a few matches of Disintegration’s multiplayer PvP mode, which pits teams of five players against one another. Each player pilots a floating armored tank known as a grav-cycle, while also taking command of a small squad of other units. The FPS aspect of the game has you blasting away at ground troops and other grav-cycles with machine guns and grenade launchers that are attached to the rig. You’re also responsible for a team on the ground that might consist of characters carrying sniper or assault rifles, as well as a beefier teammate in what looks like an Aliens power loader. As the team leader, you’re not just responsible for racking up kills and dealing damage with your powerful weapons; you also need to tell your squad what to do and when to deploy their special abilities, which can change the flow of battle pretty significantly.

Lehto said the idea is that your grav-cycle and its weapons are basically your right hand, while the squad on the ground is your left. Each member of your group can do different things, like deploy a stasis field that slows enemy units or fire off a missile barrage that does big damage in a certain area. Your job is as much to guide them as to keep them alive, though; when your squad gets blasted, you’ll have to wait for them to respawn, which puts you at a serious disadvantage.

You need to take care of your squad because they’re more easily killed than your much-tougher grav-cycle, but that doesn’t mean you’re babysitting them, Lehto said. A big challenge in designing the game was making the squad feel like an extension of the player in terms of combat, without making them an irritation. That meant making the units a little more autonomous than what you might expect from an RTS, he explained.

“We’re building in a lot of mechanics to keep those units close to you at all times,” Lehto told GameSpot. “They’re tethered to the grav-cycle. If the player moves the units, they’re literally firing a weapon from the grav-cycle down to the terrain to say move here, or attack this, or prioritize this as a target. So you can engage other grav-cycles and other enemy units and have your units focus-fire on them, and that sort of thing, or tell them to move over to a particular location where they can engage in combat and you can flank from a different perspective. So there are a lot of ways that you can engage as a crew, as a singular unit, and that’s the way we think about this game, where pilot and grav-cycle are one part of the equation and the units are another part of the equation, and they are a single entity.”

The game type in the demo was sort of a reverse of capture the flag. One team plays offense and the other defense, with the attacking team attempting to carry one of two bombs into the defenders’ territory to score a point. The thing is, bombs can only be carried by your smaller units. That means you need to defend your squad and be careful about where you send them. If they die, the bomb drops on the ground, and after a short while, it explodes, taking anyone in the vicinity with it.

While there’s already a lot going on in any given battle thanks to plenty of grav-cycles and units, Disintegration adds another layer to your tactical thinking by letting you choose from different grav-cycle crews to control at any point during a match. Each crew has a different visual theme, a different squad makeup, and a different set of abilities; Lehto likened them to “biker gangs of the future.” It’s here that Disintegration lets you adjust your capabilities to meet your style or your team’s needs. Some crews are better at long-range combat, others are heavy hitters close up. You might grab a crew that specializes in deploying abilities that slow up enemies so your teammates can blast them, or hang back and shoot your teammates with a healing weapon that helps them stay in the fight longer.

It’s a lot to keep track of, and our hands-on time with Disintegration started with a steep learning curve of getting used to handling the grav-cycle, which is a bit slow and methodical in its movement. The benefit is the cycle can gain or drop altitude to gain better sightlines and boost short distances to get out of danger. Things started to gel as our team got the hang of how V1 wants you to think about Disintegration, however. It’s not a rip-roaring run-and-gun kind of game; it’s a slower and more cerebral experience, even when there are several players and their units engaging in a single battle.

Because you have the squad with you, it’s necessary to think about how best to use your units to your advantage. You can send them to a location to get them into cover or give them a better shot at enemies while you engage enemy grav-cycles yourself. Between shooting, positioning your grav-cycle, positioning your units, using their abilities, and coordinating with your human teammates, there’s a lot to keep in mind. But those elements also give you a wealth of combat possibilities that go beyond just charging into a fight and slugging it out with an enemy group. If you can keep your head when things start to get messy, you can outmaneuver and outplay your enemies–but that requires changing how you think about first-person shooter engagements. Fast responses and strategic assessments are essential, and in our session, we finally managed victory when our team started surrounding and flanking opponents to make it tough for them to chase down bomb-carrying units.

Lehto said that even though V1 is a smaller studio–it only sports a staff of about 30–players can expect more post-release content for Disintegration.

“The point of what we’re constructing right now is that we’re making sure that we can easily add onto it,” he said. “Especially on the multiplayer side, with regards to new multiplayer modes, new maps, new crews, new skins for players to aesthetically upgrade their crews for the way they look, and attachments for your grav-cycle so you can really customize things and make things your own.”

Disintegration is set to launch sometime in 2020 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Pokemon Go Azelf, Mesprit, And Uxie Raid Hour: Start Times And How To Catch

Pokemon Go‘s Water Festival is back again for another year, and as part of the event, Niantic is giving players around the world another chance to catch a rare Legendary Pokemon. Tomorrow, August 28, the Legendary lake trio Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie will return to Raid Battles in their respective regions–but they’ll only be around for a very limited time.

From 6-7 PM local time, the Legendary Psychic Pokemon will appear again as Raid Bosses, giving you only an hour to add them to your collection. To help you prepare, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about this week’s Legendary Raid Hour below, from what regions each Legendary will appear in to battling tips for when you challenge them.

Which Region Are The Legendaries In?

All three of the Legendary Psychic Pokemon will return for the Legendary Raid Hour, but each one will only appear in specific regions, so which one you encounter during the event will depend on where you live. You can see which Legendary is exclusive to each region below.

Americas and Greenland

  • Azelf

Europe, Africa, and Middle East

  • Mesprit

Asia-Pacific

  • Uxie

How To Catch

No Caption Provided

Before you can catch the Legendary Pokemon, you’ll first need to visit a Gym that’s hosting a five-star Raid and challenge them to a battle. Fortunately, there will be no shortage of Legendary Raids happening during the aforementioned hour, so it should be easy to find a Gym to visit. Like other Legendaries, Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie have high CP, so you’ll need to team up with several other players in-person if you’re hoping to battle them. Once the Legendaries have been defeated, everyone who participated in the Raid will receive a handful of Premier Balls along with the chance to catch them.

Best Pokemon To Use Against Azelf, Mesprit, And Uxie

All three Legendary Pokemon are pure Psychic-types, so regardless of which one you encounter, you’ll generally want to use the same strategy. Dark, Ghost, and Bug Pokemon all have an advantage against Psychic-types, so your best bet will be to bring along Giratina, Tyranitar, Houndoom, Weavile, and Scizor. Gengar will also deal super-effective damage against the Legendaries, but thanks to its secondary Poison typing, it’ll receive super-effective damage from them back.

Despite their similar appearance, Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie all have slightly different stats and movesets, which you should be aware of before you challenge them. Azelf deals the most damage but is the weakest defensively; Uxie excels at defense; and Mesprit falls between the two of them. You can find more tips on how to catch the Legendaries on the official Pokemon website.

Other Bonuses

While Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie will only be around for a limited time, you’ll have until August 30 to take advantage of the Water Festival’s other bonuses. Throughout the event, Water-type Pokemon like Magikarp, Wailmer, and others are spawning in the wild more often than normal, and if you’re near a body of water, you’ll have a greater chance to find the following Pokemon:

  • Wartortle
  • Poliwhirl
  • Seaking
  • Lapras
  • Qwilfish
  • Mantine
  • Lotad
  • Feebas
  • Piplup
  • Buizel
  • Finneon

Additionally, Shiny versions of Carvanha and Barboach are appearing in the wild, and Water Pokemon are more likely to hatch from eggs. Separately, Niantic is soon rolling out a set of Ultra Bonuses for the game, which includes the arrival of Gen 5 Pokemon. The Mythical Jirachi is also available through a new Special Research questline called A Thousand-Year Slumber.

Fortnite Locations: Where To Find Claptrap’s Missing Eye And How To Return It (Borderlands Event)

Fortnite‘s 10.20 update has arrived, and it’s kicked off a limited-time Borderlands crossover event. From now until September 10, all Fortnite: Battle Royale players can take on a special set of challenges that will unlock Borderlands-inspired cosmetic rewards, even if you haven’t purchased a Season X Battle Pass.

Most of the Borderlands challenges are fairly straightforward and have you searching for loot or eliminating opponents in the new Pandora Rift Zone, but there are a couple that will require a bit more legwork, like the task to find Claptrap’s missing eye and then return it to him. If you’re unsure of where to look, we’ve put together the map and guide below to help you complete the challenge.

Where To Find Claptrap’s Eye

First things first: like the other Borderlands crossover challenges, this mission is centralized in the new Pandora Rift Zone, which is located in the desert to the south of Paradise Palms. This particular challenge involves two steps: first you’ll need to track down Claptrap’s missing eye, and then once you’ve collected it, bring it back to him.

Claptrap himself can be found alongside the road near the westernmost entrance of the desert, while his eye is hidden inside a building to the south; once you make your way inside the correct building, you’ll spot it in front of a television. You can see exactly where Claptrap and his eye are located on the map below.

No Caption Provided

How To Complete The Challenge

Once you know where to go, all you need to do is collect the eye and bring it back to the robot. If you need a visual guide, you can watch us complete the challenge in the video above. Once you’ve returned the eye, you’ll unlock a Crunk Bunny spray for your troubles, and you’ll be another step closer to unlocking the Mayhem wrap–the reward for completing all six of Fortnite’s Borderlands challenges.

As previously mentioned, the Borderlands crossover event will be live until September 10, so you have until then to complete its related challenges. Most are self-explanatory and can be cleared easily with enough persistence, but the only other one that may give you some trouble is to search different Vault Symbols. You can see where those are located in our Vault Symbol locations guide. You can find helpful tips for other challenges from this season in our full Fortnite Season X challenges roundup.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Episode 1 DLC Is Free On PS4, Xbox One, And PC

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has graced players with some free content on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. From now until September 1, you can grab the action-RPG’s first DLC chapter, the Fields of Elysium, for free.

Part of the Fate of Atlantis expansion pack–which also includes two additional DLC chapters–the Fields of Elysium sends Kassandra on a quest to Elysium to face off against Persephone and uncover a mystery surrounding the city of Atlantis. While the other two DLC chapters–Torment of Hades and Judgment of Atlantis–are not sold separately, the entire Fate of Atlantis expansion pack is 50 percent off, slashing the cost to $12.50 USD. Alternatively, you can pick up the season pass with all DLC for $20.

Target is also having a huge sale on Xbox One digital games, with a handful of titles seeing a 20 percent discount. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and its season pass are both part of the sale, as well as other Xbox One exclusives like Forza Horizon 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sea of Thieves, and State of Decay 2.

In our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey review, we said, “While its large-scale campaign–clocking in at over 50 hours–can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don’t quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it’s a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting.”

Astral Chain: How Long To Finish And File Size

Astral Chain is the latest from developer Platinum Games and it brings a fresh take on stylish action exclusively to the Nintendo Switch. Now that some of us have played through the entire game, we can share just how long it takes to finish. Of course, your mileage may vary since time to completion depends on your playstyle and the amount of optional content you engage with, but here we can give a general range.

As the reviewer of Astral Chain for GameSpot, I spent a total of 35 hours with the game to roll credits. This included a full playthrough on the Platinum Standard difficulty, an earnest effort to find and finish every side quest possible, and plenty of time spent exploring for leftover hidden missions–side quests also factor into your overall mission grade. I spent an extra five hours in an attempt to find the remaining content within the story chapters, and try out the hardest difficulty (Platinum Ultimate).

You may want to rescue all the cats as well, which might be hard, but it’ll warm your heart.Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8Gallery image 9Gallery image 10

Astral Chain features an achievement list called “Orders” which act as challenges to complete throughout the game. There are 185 of them, and while they’re not essential, they grant you rewards like upgrade materials, items, or new cosmetic options for your character. Clearing out that list will add an inordinate amount of time to your playtime as some challenges require story completion on the hardest difficulty, S+ ranks on everything, among other things.

The game would be much shorter if you simply go through the main story questline without looking at anything else, to which I would estimate to around 15 hours–you would be doing the bare minimum, however.

As for install size, Astral Chain requires 9.8 GB of storage space on your Switch or SD card if you plan on purchasing the digital version of the game.

Astral Chain launches this Friday, August 30 exclusively on Nintendo Switch. To get up to speed on it, be sure to read my Astral Chain review in which I say, “Astral Chain’s shortcomings don’t overshadow what it does best. It’s an incredible execution of a fresh take on Platinum Games’ foundation, standing among the stylish-action greats. And its own anime-inspired swagger makes fights all the more exhilarating.”

Fortnite Vault Symbol Locations: Where To Search Different Vault Symbols For Borderlands 3 Challenge

Epic has kicked off a Borderlands 3 crossover event in Fortnite: Battle Royale. Not only are there new Borderlands cosmetics to purchase from the in-game store, there’s a variety of special, limited-time challenges to complete and Borderlands-inspired rewards to unlock–and unlike the standard weekly challenges, these are available to everyone, even if you don’t own a Season X Battle Pass.

Most of the challenges are fairly straightforward and involve searching for loot or eliminating opponents within the Pandora Rift Zone, but one of the trickier tasks asks you to search different Vault Symbols. If you’re not sure where those can be found, we’ve put together this map and guide to help you out.

Where To Find Vault Symbol Locations

The Pandora Rift Zone is located in the desert, to the south of Paradise Palms, so you’ll first need to head there to take on this challenge. The Vault Symbols you need to search for are the Borderlands logo, and they can be found spraypainted on various objects around the area. There are several scattered around the Rift Zone, but you only need to find three of them to complete the challenge. We’ve marked down a few of the ones we’ve found on the map below.

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4

How To Complete The Challenge

Once you know where to look, all you need to do is track down three of the Vault Symbols and interact with them. You don’t need to find all three within the same match, but you do need to search different symbols in order for your progress to count, so you can’t return to the same one in different matches. Once you’ve searched all three symbols, you’ll unlock a Vault Symbol banner.

The Borderlands crossover event is running until September 10, so you have until then to complete all of these special Borderlands challenges. If you manage to complete all six before the end of the event, you’ll earn a special wrap for your troubles. The event kicked off as part of Fortnite’s 10.20 update, which also introduced the new Shield Bubble item to the game. If you need help completing any other challenges from this season, be sure to check out our ongoing Season X challenges roundup for more tips and guides.

Destiny 2 Ascendant Challenge Week 4 Guide (Aug 27-Sept 3)

We’re quickly nearing the end of Destiny 2‘s second year, and the arrival of Shadowkeep. The Solstice of Heroes event has come to a close, but while there’s still time to do Moments of Triumph, the next month or so of Destiny 2 is likely to be a bit slower than the rest of the Season of Opulence. Now is a good time to clear out your Vault and chase the game’s best armor and weapons–like the armor pieces from the Dreaming City, which often carry Enhanced perks that will be useful even after Armor 2.0 drops with Shadowkeep. And a great way to get them quickly is with weekly Ascendant Challenges.

As always, we’ve continued to rotate through the available Ascendant Challenges; the specifics of what you have to do are the same, but it’s not immediately obvious where you need to go or what’s going to happen inside. Below, you’ll find a guide to help you out.

Before you try to tackle the Ascendant Challenge, the same requirements as always hold true; most notably, you need a Tincture of Queensfoil. This is a consumable item that you’ll happen upon while playing in the Dreaming City, although you can also buy them. Using a Tincture gives you the Ascendance buff, which allows you to see a Taken portal. It’s this portal you must go through to complete the Ascendant Challenge. Along with a Tincture, you have to grab the Ascendant Challenge bounty from Petra in the Dreaming City; it’s through this that you actually get your Powerful gear.

For the current challenge, the portal is located in Rheasilvia. In the northeast corner, head inside a building and go straight as far as you can. Turn right, and then go left in the next area to reach Harbinger’s Seclude. Go up a set of stairs and out the doorway on the right. Head straight through this area, through another doorway, and continue straight in the next zone. At the end of a bridge you’ll see a statue covered in Taken Blight balls; look for hidden Ascendant platforms to appear in the big open area in front of the statue starting on the right side of the room that will take you to the top, or jump up the blights themselves to reach the portal on top of the statue’s head. Check out the video above for a walkthrough. If you struggle to get up, take out your ghost and you’ll see some invisible platforms just off the slide of the area that can help you get up.

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7

Going through the portal transports you to the Keep of Honed Edges in the Ascendant Plane. Platform your way across a series of rocks and you’ll find an area with three knights who are immune to damage. Kill all of the other enemies and the barrier protecting a sword will go away, allowing you to pick up the relic.

At this point, more enemies spawn in and one knight will begin attacking you. Kill the knight, and the other two will join the fray along with additional enemies. Take them all out, and you’ll again have to platform across a series of rocks, now with enemies to make things more challenging. There is debris moving through the area, and at least certain things you step on will disappear after a short period of time, so make sure not to linger. Make your way toward a platform with a large blue object on it to complete the challenge.

As in previous weeks, the chest you receive at the end of the Ascendant Challenge isn’t anything special. But the bounty you get from Petra offers Powerful gear for completing it; this can help to boost your Power level, so ensuring you have the bounty is essential.

Meanwhile, the quest for Thorn should keep players busy for a bit. It also represents another step forward in one of the biggest, most interesting running stories in all of Destiny lore–check out our lore catch-up guide for everything you need to know about the famous gun, its famous wielder, and what’s going on with the Drifter as the Season of the Drifter continues.

Control: How Long To Beat Remedy’s New Thriller?

Control is the latest mind-bending thriller from Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind games like Alan Wake and Quantum Break. Reviews have been largely positive, but how long can you expect the experience to last?

According to GameSpot’s review staff, completing the main quest in Control will take roughly 15 hours, if you don’t participate in many side-quests. If you take on lots of side-quests or scour the various hidden documents, that estimate would go up, so 15 hours is around the minimum you can expect.

Control currently has a generally positive review score on GameSpot sister site Metacritic, and GameSpot’s own Control review was similarly complimentary. Reviewer Peter Brown praised the game’s gorgeous art style and stylish combat, while also noting that it introduces complex, thought-provoking concepts.

“It’s not often that a game invades my thoughts the way Control has,” Brown wrote. “I’m at the point where I want to consume every last thing it has to offer. And if I’m honest, it also makes me want to go back and replay Remedy’s past games, too. Sure, it’s a faulty metroidvania in some respects, but there are so many exceptional qualities afoot that Control handily deflects any momentary ire. I can’t wait to take part in discussions about the game, to see what others have figured out, and to better understand where it all fits into Jesse’s story.”

If you’re considering picking up Control, the game is already on sale at Amazon and Walmart. The PS4 version is $50.94 and the Xbox One version for $49.94.

Fortnite 10.20 Patch Notes: Borderlands 3 Crossover, Shield Bubble, And More

Epic Games has rolled out another update for Fortnite. Patch 10.20 is now live across all platforms, and as usual, it adds another new item to the battle royale game, as well as something a bit more unexpected: a Borderlands crossover event. Here are the patch notes.

Headlining this week’s update is the Fortnite X Mayhem event. Players can visit Borderlands setting Pandora via a new Rift Zone, which lets you generate shield if you’re in the area long enough without taking any damage. There is also an assortment of challenges to complete and Borderlands-themed rewards to unlock, as well as a Borderlands Psycho Bundle cosmetics pack to purchase from the game’s store, which includes a Claptrap you can carry around on your back. The crossover event runs until September 10.

Additionally, this week brings a new throwable item called the Shield Bubble. As its name suggests, it creates a protective bubble that lasts for 30 seconds and negates projectiles and explosives, although other players are still able to walk through it. The Shield Bubble can be found as floor loot or in chests, supply drops, and vending machines.

Rounding out the patch are some balance changes and adjustments. As Epic previously announced, the controversial BRUTE mechs have finally been nerfed. The developer has also re-enabled the recent Junk Rift item following an issue with it, while the Storm Flip, Drum Gun, and Storm Scout Sniper Rifle have all been vaulted.

You can see all of the changes and additions Epic has made to Fortnite: Battle Royale below, while the full patch notes can be found on the developer’s website.

Fortnite: Battle Royale Update 10.20 Patch Notes

Weapons & Items

  • Shield Bubble
    • Rare item.
    • Found from Floor Loot, Chests, Supply Drops, and Vending Machines.
    • Lasts for 30 seconds.
    • Creates a large bubble that blocks projectiles and explosives. However, players can still run through it.
      • Projectiles and explosives can be fired from inside the bubble but cannot go outside of it.
      • The bubble’s emitter has 400 HP. Destroying it deactivates the bubble.
  • B.R.U.T.E.
    • The B.R.U.T.E.’s map icon will remain visible to all players after players board one. The icon will follow the vehicle as it moves.
      • This is to increase awareness of a B.R.U.T.E.’s presence and location to all players in the match.
    • The B.R.U.T.E. changes below were implemented between August 22-23.
      • Decreased the maximum amount of rockets fired by the B.R.U.T.E. in a single charge from 10 to 6.
      • Decreased the rate at which the rockets are fired from the B.R.U.T.E. by 56%.
      • The B.R.U.T.E. no longer grants materials to the driver and passenger when stomping or dashing through the environment.
      • Returned the explosion radius of B.R.U.T.E. missiles back to their original range.
        • We had decreased the explosion radius by 42% in the August 22 hotfix. This change in particular felt like an overswing, making it too difficult for the B.R.U.T.E to hit targets with less rockets and mobility. So on August 23 we brought the damage radius back (in core modes) to where it was before August 22. We’re continuing to closely evaluate the B.R.U.T.E. changes to make sure they align with our goals.
          • As of v10.20, these changes are now also in Arena & Tournament playlists.
      • Increased the dash cooldown from 3 seconds to 5 seconds.
      • Decreased the velocity gained from boosting while in air by 33%.
      • Adjusted the variability of spawn rates for storm phases 1, 2, and 3 in core modes.
        • Note: These adjustments do not affect the spawn rates in Arena and Tournament playlists. You can find those spawn rates in the v10.10 Patch Notes.
