Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Fighters Revealed: Terminator, Spawn, And The Joker

At Gamescom 2019, Netherrealm Studios and WB Games revealed the full cast of fighters coming to Mortal Kombat 11‘s Kombat Pack. In the new roster trailer, returning MK fighter Sindel, Image Comic’s Spawn, the Terminator, and Batman’s arch-nemesis The Joker made their debut in MK11. These characters were hinted at before, however, this is the first time we’ve seen how they will look in action.

The trailer also shared release dates for each of the new fighters. Interestingly enough, the final character for the Kombat Pack, Spawn, will release on March 17, 2020. The character’s debut will be almost a full year after MK11’s debut. Here’s a quick rundown of when each fighter will be available.

  • Shang Tsung: Out now
  • Nightwolf: Out now
  • Terminator: October 8, 2019
  • Sindel: November 26, 2019
  • Joker: January 28, 2020
  • Spawn: March 17, 2020

Much like 2015’s Mortal Kombat X, Netherrealm has plans for a full suite of fighters to join the fray in Mortal Kombat 11, and there is likely more coming up after Spawn joins the roster. As of this time, the only characters out now are Shang Tsung and Nightwolf, both of which were released in the months shortly after the game’s launch. The only other characters mentioned by name in previous Kombat Pack trailers were Sindel and Spawn, the latter of which is one of many guest characters diving into MK. Since MKX, Netherrealm Studios has kept the tradition of including guest fighters, which they carried over into Injustice 2–featuring Hellboy, Sub Zero, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Interestingly enough, many of these fighters were previously leaked online due to players data-mining the Switch version of MK11. These previous leaks revealed the names of each fighter, along with some of their pre-fight dialog with other characters. So far, the leaks have all panned out. However, one fighter that’s absent–despite being mentioned in the leaks–is Evil Dead’s Ash Williams. Every other fighter from the leaks was confirmed except for Ash, which is indeed strange. The previous Kombat Pack DLC trailer seemingly had a tease for his arrival, placing the sound of a chainsaw revving up at the end of the video. With that said, we’ll likely see another Kombat Pack in the future–so there’s still a chance.

For more on Mortal Kombat 11’s new batch of fighters, along with other games shown off during Gamescom 2019, be sure to keep up with Gamespot’s continuing coverage of the show.

Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Includes This Great Nod To Classic Mario And Sonic

The 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan will be a homecoming of sorts for Mario and Sonic. The unlikely pair have starred in officially licenced games for the iconic sporting event over the past 12 years, with the upcoming Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 being the sixth entry in the long-running series. Unlike previous entries, however, it will be the first to feature Classic Events which use 2D sprites and environments.

Announced during a Nintendo Presents livestream at Gamescom 2019, the classic mode transports the game’s varied cast back in time to 1964 so they can compete in the previous Olympic Games held in Tokyo.

In the mode, the likes of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser are using sprites from 1985’s Super Mario Bros., whereas Sonic and pals feature sprites from 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s a nostalgic mishmash of 8- and 16-bit graphics, and the mode is fairly comprehensive, too. The classic 2D characters are able to compete in 10 different events, such as the 100m dash, the long jump, judo, team volleyball, and more, and each event will also take place in a 2D arena.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 launches on the Nintendo Switch on November 5 in North America and November 8 in Europe.

Xbox’s New Studios Will Be Focused On Making Exclusive Games

Microsoft says its new studios will “focus on making games for our platforms,” with no further plans to release more Xbox exclusives on PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch.

The company has recently acquired a number of studios that either have or will release games on Nintendo Switch and PS4, including Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Obsidian. However, it looks unlikely that this partnership will continue with Xbox’s future releases.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft outlined its plans for upcoming first-party titles, saying, “The past year has been an exciting time for us as we have more than doubled the internal creative teams making up Xbox Game Studios. As these new studios transitioned in, we were aware of some existing commitments to other platforms and will honor them. However, going forward these new studios will focus on making games for our platforms. We have no plans to further expand our exclusive first-party games to other consoles.”

This follows an announcement, via Nintendo, that previous Xbox One and PC exclusive Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition, will be coming to Nintendo Switch with Microsoft handling the publishing duties.

Nintendo and Microsoft have been collaborating on multiple projects over the past 12 months. Banjo-Kazooie was revealed as a DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate back at E3 2019, and Microsoft also helped support the Switch releases for both Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Cuphead. The company has plans to bring Xbox Live to Nintendo’s machine in the future as well.

Meanwhile, games like Fortnite: Battle Royale, Rocket League, and Minecraft continue to support crossplay across multiple platforms, and Microsoft has no desire to halt these plans for current or upcoming titles. “We continue to believe deeply in crossplay and progression of games with the right flexibility for developers to ensure a fair and fun experience,” the statement reads.

Microsoft also has plans to make its IP accessible via other devices by using the company’s streaming service xCloud.

Pokemon Go Ultra Bonuses Will Feature First Gen 5 Pokemon And Jirachi

Pokemon Go developer Niantic has rolled out an assortment of bonuses to reward players for completing all the Global Challenges during the recent Pokemon Go Fest event in Yokohama, Japan, but there are still more rewards on the way. Because players managed to clear all of the Global Challenges from this year’s three Go Fests, Niantic is releasing a variety of Ultra Bonuses in the game soon, and they include the return of several Legendaries–as well as the first appearance of some brand-new Pokemon.

The Ultra Bonuses will be released in waves over the next several weeks. First, from September 2-9, some Pokemon originally from the Johto region will appear in the game. During that week, players may hatch Unown letters U, L, T, R, and A from 10 km eggs, and the Legendary dogs Entei, Raikou, and Suicune will return to Raid Battles. On top of that, players will have a chance to find Shiny versions of Sentret and Gligar in the wild.

The next set of Ultra Bonuses will be available from September 9-16. During that time, some region-exclusive Pokemon like Farfetch’d, Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime, and Tauros may hatch from 7 km eggs, and those who are really lucky may hatch their Shiny forms. All five forms of the Mythical Pokemon Deoxys will also appear in five-star Raid Battles. To help you challenge it, Pokemon that are effective against Deoxys will appear in lower-tier Raids.

The final wave of Ultra Bonuses, which will be available from September 16-23, will introduce the first Gen 5 Pokemon to Go. The Gear Pokemon Klink will appear in Raids, and players will have a chance to encounter Shiny versions of it, Patrat, and Lillipup. On top of that, Mewtwo that know Psystrike will appear in five-star Raid Battles, and you’ll have your first chance to catch a Shiny Mewtwo.

In addition to those three waves of Ultra Bonuses, all players will be able to undertake a new Special Research questline that leads to an encounter with the Mythical Pokemon Jirachi, and any Pokemon eggs placed in Incubators over these three weeks will hatch in half the time as normal. You can read more details about all of the Ultra Bonuses on the official Pokemon website.

Over 100 GameStop Employees Laid Off, Including Members Of Game Informer Editorial

GameStop has announced that over a hundred employees have been laid off. These job cuts hit multiple divisions throughout the company, ranging from corporate headquarters to Game Informer magazine.

“As part of the previously announced GameStop Reboot initiative to transform our business for the future and improve our financial performance, we can confirm a workforce reduction was implemented impacting more than 120 corporate staff positions, representing approximately 14% of our total associate base at our company headquarters as well as at some other offices,” GameStop wrote in a statement to GameSpot.

The Reboot initiative was implemented after GameStop failed to sell itself in 2018, though the company has continued to struggle in the growing digital gaming market. The company has put a greater emphasis on used games and pop culture collectibles sales, but both seem to only be slowing GameStop’s descent, not stopping it.

“While these changes are difficult, they were necessary to reduce costs and better align the organization with our efforts to optimize the business to meet our future objectives and success factors,” the statement concluded. “We recognize that this is a difficult day for our company and particularly for those associates impacted. We appreciate their dedication and service to GameStop and are committed to supporting them during this time of transition.”

Unfortunately for several members of the Game Informer staff, the layoffs impacted them as well. Of the 19 full-time members on the editorial team, seven have announced on Twitter that they have been laid off–managing editor Matt Bertz, senior editor Imran Khan, senior associate editor Kyle Hilliard, senior associate editor Jeff Marchiafava, associate editor Suriel Vazquez, associate editor Elise Favis, and associate editor Javy Gwaltney. If you’re looking for talented writers and editors to join your staff, consider reaching out. All seven deserve to continue doing what they did for Game Informer.

“I am trying to get things right with my people,” Game Informer editor-in-chief Andy McNamara tweeted. “I love Game Informer, its people and its readers more than any corporation could, and I will address all the issues when I can, but for now I need to focus on my GI family.”

Ubisoft Giving Away A Free PC Game For A Limited Time

Ubisoft’s historical fighting game For Honor is once again free on PC, but this time you’ll only need Uplay to claim it. The offer is only available until August 28, so act fast if you still haven’t picked it up.

Get For Honor (PC) for free here

First, you do need a Uplay account. After you’ve signed up, all you need to do is go to the Ubisoft Store website and click the “Get It For Free” button. It’ll ask you to either launch or download Uplay, and once the launcher is open, For Honor will be redeemed to your account. Then it’s just time to install it, and you’re off to the races.

For Honor is currently in Year 3 and has seen the release of the Black Prior and Hitokiri classes. Two more are set to release by the end of the year. Ubisoft supports For Honor with regular events, new items, and more.

The Marching Fire expansion released last year. It added the Chinese Wu Lin faction, the fourth after the game launched with Knights, Samurai, and Vikings. The Wu Lin faction consists of four classes: the Dao blade-wielding Tiandi, Guando heavy Jiang Jun, hook sword-equipped Nuxia, and staff-swinging Shaolin.

Prior to the Wu Lin, Ubisoft spent its first year after release adding several new classes to the Knights, Samurai, and Vikings. These included the Shinobi, Centurion, Gladiator, and more.

In our For Honor review, GameSpot’s Matt Espineli said, “[For Honor’s] fundamental tenets of discipline and restraint are bestowed upon you permanently, forever changing the way you perceive a melee-combat encounter in a game. In its highest moments, For Honor is difficult to put down.” He added that those who take the time to dive deep into For Honor’s combat “will be rewarded with some of the most satisfying multiplayer melee fighting conceived in recent years.”

Path Of Exile Will Introduce Tower-Defense Gameplay With Its Blight Update

Continuing its years of significant growth, Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear Games has revealed the next major update coming to the free-to-play action-RPG. In the upcoming Blight expansion, players will take on a questline that introduces a new tower defense mode, yielding even more loot to outfit your characters with. This new update follows a set of other new expansions in the past year that have overhauled a significant part of the game, introducing new events and storylines for players to take part in.

Just before its reveal, we got an early look at the new content, which releases on September 6 for PC, and on PS4 and Xbox One September 9. The Blight update introduces a new storyline involving an NPC named Sister Cassia who tasks players to repel the encroaching corruption that’s taken root across the world. To fight off these waves of monsters, you’ll need to construct complex machines to help stem the tide. According to the developers, the intent of these Blight encounters is to offer players a chance to take on bite-sized events that can open up access to better loot. The reward for clearing these fights are items called Oils, which can buff existing gear and produce new items for your character.

As is tradition, the new expansion will also introduce a new suite of quality-of-life changes. These include revamps to the Atlas of Worlds questing system, new class and skill tweaks, and several fixes focusing on league play. Following the reception from previous expansions, the developers wanted to focus more on letting players experience the game at their own pace, and take on events in the order they want.

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6Gallery image 7Gallery image 8

Here’s a quick rundown of all the key features in the Blight update:

  • Blight League: The new expansion will introduce a new NPC named Sister Cassia, who allows players to access the new Blight Encounters. These events will focus on tower defense style gameplay against new monsters. Players can also acquire special Blighted maps, which open up access to new higher-end areas with greater rewards.
  • Revised Atlas: The Atlas of Worlds update will receive some upgrades once again. In the Blight expansion, players can now interact with Masters in the player hideout. Furthermore, new Master missions are available for players to dive into.
  • Gear Enchants: A new item set to appear in Path of Exile are the Oils, which can imbue existing gears with specific properties. Combining oils can even produce new equipment, such as rings and amulets.
  • Class Changes: Certain player-made archetypes are seeing something of a revamp. For instance, the Necromancer archetype will now allow for greater control of your minions. Furthermore, the Shadow class’ Saboteur archetype will have its mine skill altered to allow for greater control.

Following several expansions, and the PS4 launch, 2019 has been an excellent year for Path of Exile. The Blight update looks to be another fun event to take part, which continues to surprise with what the action-RPG can offer. The developers stated that they plan to reveal more of what’s to come with the free-to-play game at the upcoming ExileCon event in November.
