Cliff Bleszinski Clarifies Comments About Making A New Game, Which Is Not Battle Royale

Cliff Bleszinski tweeted recently that he had an idea for a new video game, and naturally this led to a lot of speculation and intrigue about what the Gears of War creator might do next, especially after he initially said he would probably never make another game.

Bleszinski has now clarified his comments, saying his new game would be “small” and developed “remotely.” It sounds like it would be very different from the productions he’s worked on in the past, including Gears of War and LawBreakers, both of which were made with relatively large development teams and published by big companies.

“I have some ideas gestating, but if I did something it’d be small and most likely done remotely. Indie stuff,” Bleszinski tweeted.

In other tweets, Bleszinski confirmed that he doesn’t want to make a battle royale game, though the ideas he have “won’t get out of my head.”

“I thought I was truly done. But then, stupid brain shows up. UGH,” he said.

Currently, Bleszinski is focused on signing a deal for his memoir, which he has positioned as “Kitchen Confidential” for the gaming industry. Kitchen Confidential was the late Anthony Bourdain’s breakout writing about what happens behind-the-scenes in professional kitchens.

Bleszinski said the deal-making process for his book “has been kinda painful,” but thankfully for him, he said he’s close to signing papers with a “major publisher.”

In his post-Epic Games life, Bleszinski turned his attention in part to another one of his passions: theatre. He was an investor/producer for the play Hadestown, which won eight Tony awards, including Best Musical.

After finding success with Hadestown, Bleszinski was approached to co-produce another Broadway play, a new version of Terrence McNally’s “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.” The new version stars two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon and Audra McDonald.

Bleszinski is also involved in the restaurant business, having invested in The Raleigh Beer Garden and The Station in Raleigh, North Carolina.

“Make no mistake, though, games will always be my first love,” Bleszinski said in July.

Bleszinski was able to “retire” earlier than most in part because his career and investments in gaming and technology have proven to be lucrative. He saw a massive payday when Chinese internet giant Tencent bought shares in Epic. He was also an early investor in Oculus, and made a “very sizable chunk of money” when Facebook bought the virtual reality company.

He created and designed the massively popular Gears of War franchise while at Epic Games. After some time away, he set up a brand-new studio, Boss Key. The North Carolina studio would go on to release LawBreakers and the battle royale game Radical Heights. Both titles failed to capture a sizable audience, and Boss Key would eventually shut down. After that, Bleszinski said he would probably never make another game for a number of reasons, but now it appears he is at least entertaining the idea of coming back to gaming.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Coming To PC and PS4

Though it has been more than half a year since Travis Touchdown returned in the Nintendo Switch exclusive Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, Travis strikes once again on PC and PlayStation 4 this fall. Publishers Marvelous Inc. and Xseed Games have announced that the hack-n-slash spinoff will receive a digital Complete Edition on October 17.

Pre-ordering Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes Complete Edition on the PlayStation Store or Steam, which retails for $40 USD / $59 AUD / £33 GBP, nets you the game’s two DLC packs. One pack is Black Dandelion, which includes Shinobu Jacobs as a playable character, two Shinobu skins, and six Badman adventure mode chapters. The other, Bubblegum Fatale, comes with Bad Girl as a playable character, two Bad Girl skins, a new Killer Marathon stage, and one Travis adventure mode chapter. You also get a bevy of additional in-game shirts with your purchase. Both packs are only accessible after you have completed the main story at least once. PS Plus members get 10 percent off for pre-ordering ahead of release. Steam pre-orders do not require a membership to receive 10 percent off.

Travis Strikes Again takes place seven years after No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, and sees Travis Touchdown team up with Badman in an arcade-style, top-down hack-n-slash romp. The game is a departure for the series but retains many of the core elements the franchise is known for, particularly the bold self-awareness and over-the-top action.

In our Travis Strikes Again review, we said, “Once you’ve sifted through the references and callbacks, you have a competent action game with some great ideas that are only halfway there. However, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes doesn’t quite deliver on its potential, relying too heavily on repetitive encounters.”

During E3 2019, Nintendo and game director Suda51 unveiled No More Heroes III. Not much is known about the game, but we do know the anticipated sequel is currently slated for a 2020 release on Nintendo Switch.

The Halo Windows App Is Shutting Down, And Here’s Why

The Halo app for Windows is no longer operational. Microsoft announced on its website that the app–which served as a hub for Halo news, game stats, and more–was officially decommissioned on August 16.

Microsoft decided to shut down the Halo app for Windows because it was “no longer a key component of our future plans and aspirations.”

No Caption Provided

“As the 343 Team looks ahead and works on the future of Halo, we periodically take stock of everything we currently operate and support across the entire franchise ecosystem. As time goes by, various applications and services fall out of scope and are de-prioritized as they are no longer a key component of our future plans and aspirations,” Microsoft said. “Ceasing support and operation of these legacy offerings frees up resources that can be re-deployed on better services for the future.”

All of the content hosted on the Halo app for Windows can now be found on the Halo website–Halowaypoint.com and also Halo.gg. In addition to Halo news, the Halo app hosts game stats for Halo Wars 2, and these will continue to populate until February 16, 2020. However, all of these stats can also be seen in Halo Wars 2 itself and on Halo Waypoint.

The Halo app for Windows also served as the launcher for Halo Wars 2 and Halo 5: Forge. However, players will now need to launch the games from the client. “Please note that this will have zero impact to your ability to play and enjoy these games and has no impact on performance,” Microsoft said.

In discussing the Halo app’s usage, Microsoft only said that “a number of people” used it over the years, which makes it sound like it was not very popular.

“We hope the content it delivered helped to enrich your enjoyment of all things Halo,” Microsoft said. “We appreciate your support and look forward to bigger and better things in the future.”

In other Halo news, Microsoft also announced this week that it would no longer release new updates for Halo Wars 2 as the team moves on to other projects.

Microsoft’s Halo development team, 343 Industries, continues to work on Halo: The Master Chief Collection (including bringing it to PC), in addition to the next mainline instalment Halo Infinite.

Two Excellent Games Are Free For The Next Week

Another round of PC games are free for Epic Games Store users this week, and they’re good ones. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is free to claim now, and because it’s an M-rated game that may be blocked behind parental control settings for some players, Epic is also giving away Hyper Light Drifter. To claim the free games, all you need is a free Epic account if you don’t already have one. Once you add the games to your account, they’re yours to keep.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden places you in a post-apocalyptic world where nature has taken over the earth and only mutants are left to scavenge and survive. Together with your team of mutants, you’ll explore the fallen world, using stealth and turn-based, tactical combat to take down enemies. The game earned a 9/10 in our Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden review.

“Juggling all the demands of combat, from patiently surveying the field beforehand through to learning how to best counter each enemy type and improvising a new strategy when it all goes horribly wrong, make for an immensely satisfying tactical experience,” wrote critic David Wildgoose.

An action-adventure RPG influenced by 16-bit classics and Studio Ghibli films, Hyper Light Drifter follows a character known as the Drifter, who wields an energy sword and utilizes other special abilities to defeat monsters. Similar to Journey, there’s no dialogue; the story is conveyed more through visuals and music. The game also earned a 9/10 in GameSpot’s Hyper Light Drifter review.

“Hyper Light Drifter’s setting is so beautiful, so haunting, that I long to know all I can about it,” wrote Kevin VanOrd. “I wish to hear the stories its citizens tell of the world it once was, and the one it might become. I want to hear the music that they sing, and see the places they have been. As stunning as it is, Hyper Light Drifter’s greatest triumph isn’t in the story that it tells, but in the stories that it doesn’t. I don’t know this place’s entire history, but its desolate elegance inspires me to fill in the gaps myself.”

Get this week’s free games at Epic

Both Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Hyper Light Drifter will be free to claim from Epic until Thursday, August 22, when they’ll be replaced by Epic’s next freebie, Gomez.

The Surge 2 Has Gone Gold

As is customarily the case with games after they pass certification and are approved for manufacturing and distribution, upcoming third-person action-RPG The Surge 2 has gone gold. Charge your controllers and fine-tune you hand-eye coordination ahead of the game’s PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One launch on September 24.

The game’s official Twitter account shared the news, congratulating all of the developers at Deck13 Interactive for their long and hard work. Along with the tweet came an accolades trailer with a bunch of pull quotes from various outlets like Eurogamer and IGN Spain.

Pre-orders for The Surge 2, which retails for approximately $60 USD / £50 GBP / $90 AUD, are available now. Doing so secures you the exclusive URBN Gear Pack, which comes packaged with the well-used Cutter from The Surge, a full-body armor set, the URBN Judgement Axe, the URBN Skimmer Drone, a Radar Module, and a unique online message icon.

We had the opportunity to go hands-on with a preview demo of The Surge 2. While we found combat to be an improvement over its predecessor, our experience with The Surge 2 demo was hampered by the lack of enemy variety. We said of the demo, “It’s disappointing to not see more unique enemy types in the early hours of The Surge 2. Hopefully, more will be added further into the story, as some of the battles near the end of The Surge 2 demo were beginning to feel repetitive.”

GTA 5 Online Secret Mission Unlocks When You Get Really, Really Drunk

Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online have lots of secrets to discover, and now dedicated fans have found yet another one of them. The new Diamond Casino update for GTA Online contains a special mission that is apparently only accessible by getting really, really drunk.

As explained by Kotaku, here’s how it works: First, you must own a penthouse in the Diamond Casino because that’s how you get the ability to play story missions through the update. After you’ve done that, visit the public bar or your own penthouse bar and starting knocking back shots of Macbeth Whisky. The goal here is to get so wasted that you black out and wake up somewhere else.

You can wake up in all manner of different places, so the trick with this Easter Egg seems to be to simply keep destroying your character’s liver with booze until you trigger the mission. Try enough times and you may eventually wake up outside, far away from the Casino, with paramedics tending to you after your big night of partying.

The casino manager calls you and asks, “So, how’s the hangover?” In your drunken stupor you borrowed a Pisswasser beer truck and the manager, Ms. Baker, says she’ll be more forgiving if you bring it back to her at the Casino. She also cracks a joke about how you were such a drunken jerk without ever saying a word, which is a reference to how GTA Online characters do not speak.

Complete the mission and Ms. Baker says to you, “Congratulations. Your damage limitation skills are second to none.”

The reward for completing the mission is the ability to take on more missions. Check out the video above from YouTube user Ice InfluX to see the secret mission in action. A second secret Casino mission was also discovered, and–you guessed it–it also involves getting sloshed.

GTA Online’s Diamond Casino update launched at the end of July, and it’s proven to be wildly popular. After the update was released, GTA Online had its most players ever, which is a remarkable achievement given that the game was released in 2013.

How Ark: Survival Evolved Became A Big Success Without Loot Boxes Or Skins

Studio Wildcard’s dinosaur game Ark: Survival Evolved is one of gaming’s biggest success stories in recent years. By the developer’s latest count, it’s sold 16 million copies across PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, with ten million more installs on mobile where it’s free.

Part of what makes the game’s ongoing success so noteworthy is that the title does not offer loot boxes or skins, instead opting to sell big, premium expansions that help the game enjoy sustained revenue that funds future development.

Studio Wildcard co-founder Jesse Rapczak told GI.biz that Ark enjoys a “sustainable revenue model” by way of launching one or two major “premium updates” each year.

“We don’t sell skins, we don’t sell upgrade packs,” he said. “But Ark is an online game with official servers and a lot of costs to keep the game running. It’s important to us to always be bringing in new players, and part of that is creating new content for the existing ones so they bring in their friends.”

Ark has welcomed three expansions to date: Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Extinction. The next big one is called Genesis, and it will be released in two parts starting in Fall 2020.

Rapczak said he feels “a little bit justified” about the decision to release premium expansions instead of chasing microtransactions like many other big games do. “It feels good when people want to pay for what you’re creating, rather than them feeling like they’re getting nickeled, dimed and swindled a little, which is I think what happens when you have loot boxes and tack on those mechanics to something they’ve already paid for,” he said.

Free-to-play mechanics in full-price games can be problematic and challenging–for players and the developer alike, Rapczak said.

“If players have already paid for the game and you’re adding on these sorts of free-to-play mechanics, it’s kind of annoying,” he said. “And you’re also doubling your work, because you have to make sure the base game is great enough that people want to spend money on it, and then you also have to figure out how to entice them to spend further money on the game. I guess that’s why the big companies like EA, Ubisoft and whoever are willing to tackle that, but there’s been a lot of issues with that. For indies and medium-sized companies, it’s not the thing to try and pursue.”

Microtransaction systems, while controversial, can be big business. For example, NBA 2K19 was sharply criticized for its use of microtransactions, but the game went on to become the best-selling NBA 2K game ever, with its microtransaction revenue rising 140%. Just recently, Destiny 2 developer Bungie explained how microtransactions are good for the game.
