E3 2019: Halo Infinite Has Split-Screen, Microsoft Reaffirms

Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2019 featured plenty of new Halo Infinite details. Almost a year after it was first announced, Microsoft revealed the game’s release window, confirmed it will be a launch title for Xbox Project Scarlett–in addition to launching on Xbox One and PC–and showed off a new cinematic trailer.

Now, Microsoft has shared a blog post on Xbox Wire from Brian Jarrard, community director at Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries. “Like last year’s reveal trailer, this latest look at Halo Infinite is powered by our new Slipspace Engine–an engine built from the ground up to realize our incredibly ambitious aspirations for the future of the franchise,” Jarrard writes. “Which yes, also includes the long-awaited return of split-screen support to the series.”

Halo has a legacy of featuring couch co-op in both the campaign and multiplayer portions of its games. Fans of the series were miffed when Halo 5: Guardians–the last entry in the series–neglected any sort of split-screen functionality, so the reaffirmation that Halo Infinite will support split-screen is welcome news. Most Halo players likely have fond memories of playing through each campaign with a friend by their side. Even if local co-op isn’t as prominent as it was prior to online gaming becoming so widespread, it’s fantastic that Halo Infinite is still sticking to the series’ roots in this regard.

Halo Infinite is set for release in Q4, 2020 for Xbox Project Scarlett, Xbox One, and PC.

Halo Infinite Release Date Revealed At E3 2019

One of Microsoft’s biggest reveals during its E3 2019 briefing was a new story trailer for Halo Infinite and confirmation that it’ll be an Xbox Scarlett launch title in Holiday 2020.

The release date in 2020 is a big deal for a number of reasons. By that time, it will have been more than 5 years after the release of Halo 5: Guardians in 2015 (assuming Infinite launches after October 2020). Not only that, but Halo hasn’t been a launch title for new Xbox hardware since all the way back in 2001 with the original Halo: Combat Evolved.

Halo Infinite is in development at 343 Industries, and it runs on the studio’s brand-new Slipspace game engine. Studio director Chris Lee appeared on the Inside Xbox livestream at E3 where he talked about how 343’s bold ambition for Halo Infinite might not have been possible with the Halo franchise’s previous game engine. He also talked about how the Slipspace engine is aimed at supporting Halo titles for 10 years to come.

Lee also confirmed that the Halo Infinite trailer from Microsoft’s E3 briefing was in fact the opening cinematic from the game. It showed Master Chief in a bad way, but no one can kill Master Chief, and he returns with an ambition to restore order to the galaxy (or something like that). Microsoft has yet to show any actual gameplay, however, and there is no word on what changes or advancements are coming on the multiplayer side.

Halo Infinite is a launch title for Xbox Scarlett, but it will also play on any of the Xbox One family of consoles. And in a big move for the franchise, Halo Infinite will be available on PC.

Marvel’s Avengers Pre-Order Guide: Get Square Enix’s Upcoming PS4, Xbox One Game

While Square Enix’s Avengers project has been shrouded in mystery since its initial teaser trailer dropped in January 2017, the publisher finally pulled back the curtain on the upcoming Marvel game during its E3 2019 press conference on June 10. Officially named Marvel’s Avengers, the game now has a release date of May 15, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s being developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, the teams behind Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

A new Avengers trailer showed that players will be able to come together and take part in four-player online multiplayer co-op. To begin with, the game will feature Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America. However, Crystal Dynamics has said it plans to introduce more characters that will be available for free.

Some details about the game leaked prior to E3 2019 in an accidental listing on the E3 Coliseum website, which was later removed. The listing revealed the game would include both solo and four-player co-op gameplay as well as character customization options.

Of course, at this point, many Marvel fans have seen Avengers: Endgame, which brought Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a dramatic, emotional close. The upcoming Avengers game will give fans the chance to play as their favorite heroes, such as Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, and revisit other familiar characters and settings from the Marvel universe. So if you felt a bit sad about some characters’ fates in Endgame, wipe your tears, because their stories are far from over.

Given the huge success of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4, there’s an unsurprisingly high level of excitement about Marvel’s Avengers. If you’re already certain it’s a day-one purchase for you, you might be wondering where you can pre-order the game and what kind of bonuses you can receive for ordering early. Here’s everything you need to know about pre-ordering Marvel’s Avengers now.

Biggest News From Square Enix E3 2019 Press Conference: Avengers Game, Outriders, More

The Square Enix E3 2019 press conference has come and gone, and we got a lot of news and reveals. The company announced new Final Fantasy remasters, showed off more of Final Fantasy VII Remake, and announced a new title from the makers of Bulletstorm.

Perhaps the biggest news, at least to some, came at the end when Square Enix showcased the all-new Marvel’s Avengers game coming to console and PC in 2020. Here’s is a quick rundown of the biggest announcements to come from the presentation.

Marvel’s Avengers Finally Revealed

Let’s start at the end. Square Enix capped off its E3 2019 briefing with the official reveal of Marvel’s Avengers, which up until this point was locked down in secret. Square Enix didn’t show a lot of gameplay, but the company confirmed its narrative will be told over the course of “multiple years,” and in good news, all post-release characters and locations will be free. We also learned what kind of game it is, sort of.

Square Enix said players can work together in teams of up to four to save the planet from hostile threats in an original story. Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America are the initial characters, and Square Enix recruited huge names like Troy Baker, Nolan North, Laura Bailey, and others to voice them. The game launches in May 2020, and there will be a pre-release beta that PS4 users can get into first.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Details

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Remake’s release date a day prior during a music concert, but the company still had news to share during the briefing. The PS4 exclusive featured extensively at the beginning of the show with an extended gameplay demonstration and combat breakdown with Cloud and Barret. Specifically, Square Enix showed off how Active Tim Battle Wait (ATB Wait) works in the remake. Additionally, the demonstration showed off more of the game’s action-RPG mechanics.

In addition to the combat details, Square Enix announced the $330 1st Class Edition that comes a Steelbook case, art book, mini-soundtrack CD, and a Play Arts Kai Cloud Strife and Hardy Daytona statue. There are also a variety of digital extras such as the bonus summon Materia DLC (Carbuncle and Cactuar) and a Chocobo chick for pre-ordering.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake launches in March 2020.

Gears Of War Judgement Devs Reveal New Game

No Caption Provided

The Polish developer behind Gears of War Judgement and Bulletstorm announced a brand-new IP called Outriders during the Square Enix press conference. It’s an action/shooter game featuring co-op, and it is set in a dark, brutal world overrun with nasty creatures. Playing to developer People Can Fly’s strengths, the game features a wide variety of different weapons that players can use to vanquish their foes. Outriders launches in Summer 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. People Can Fly says you can expect more details about the game sometime this winter.

Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers Release Date

The popular Final Fantasy MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online featured in Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference. Producer Naoki Yoshida spoke about how he envisions Shadowbringers as more than an expansion pack, stuffed with enough new content to stand alone as its own game. The expansion adds two new jobs, Gunbreaker and Dancer, while a pair of new races–Hrothgar and Viera–are added in the expansion as well.

Shadowbringers launches on July 2.

Marvel’s Avengers: The Internet Is Not Being Kind To Square Enix’s E3 Reveal Trailer

Square Enix finally gave the world a look at its upcoming Avengers game (titled Marvel’s Avengers) at E3 2019, and probably didn’t get the full reaction from the internet it hoped. The game doesn’t feature the likenesses of the Marvel Cinematic Universe actors who’ve embodied the characters for the last decade, and that resulted in the character designs getting dragged on social media.

The reveal was the last thing shown during Square’s press conference at E3 2019 and finally showed something of the game that’s being worked on by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos. Despite an extended look at Avengers, things are still pretty cryptic: though it seems to be a third-person action game, it’s not especially clear how it plays. We do know that it’s an original Avengers story (the same way Insomniac’s recent game, Marvel’s Spider-Man, was divorced from existing storylines). And it seems that Captain America buys it early in the game, with the story picking up five years later after they disband in response to taking the blame for destroying a big part of San Francisco.

There was plenty of news included in the presentation, including an upcoming Avengers beta coming to PS4 first and its release date. While the action is cinematic in the game’s trailer and Square Enix’s announcement included details like cooperative gameplay, free post-release DLC, and an all-star voice cast that includes Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Nolan North, Travis Willingham, and Jeff Schine, it was the character designs that captured imaginations.

It’s not just that the MCU actors’ likenesses weren’t used–although that was part of the reaction. Captain America’s riot officer body armor and Thor’s weird headlight shirt were among the issues many seemed to take with the designs. There were also plenty of people wondering where Hawkeye is. You can check out some of the meanest (or funniest) reactions below.

We’ve got plenty more E3 2019 coverage throughout the show, including rundowns of all the news out of the Square Enix press conference, and all the other press conferences, too–be sure to check back throughout the week for news, previews, and impressions from gaming’s biggest show.

Marvel’s Avengers At E3 2019: Post-Release DLC Is Free; No Loot Boxes Or Pay-To-Win

Marvel’s Avengers will have new content coming for years after launch, Square Enix announced during its E3 2019 livestream broadcast today. The game’s narrative will play out over the course of “multiple years,” it was said, with players assembling into teams of up to four, online, as they build out their characters, customize them, and learn new abilities. Players will work together to defend earth from all kinds of evil threats.

To make sure everyone can play together, Square Enix is offering all post-release superheroes and regions for free. Not only that, but the game won’t have random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios, the publisher said.

It was also confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers is being developed across a suite of studios, including Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics (including its new Crystal Northwest studio), Nixxes Software, Marvel Games, and a team at Square Enix.

E3 2019: Marvel’s Avengers Game Release Date Revealed, Coming Next May

To close out its E3 2019 press conference, Square Enix finally took the wraps off its long-awaited and much-rumored Avengers game. After a few cinematic trailers, a chat with the voice cast, and more, the company announced a release date: May 15, 2020.

A cinematic trailer showed the basic premise of the game: the Avengers become hated after an attempt at heroism somehow goes awry and results in mass casualties, but of course they come back together. The playable characters include five key Avengers characters with notable voice actors behind the roles: Captain America (Jeff Schine), Iron Man (Nolan North), Hulk (Troy Baker), Thor (Travis Willingham), and Black Widow (Laura Bailey).

The studio also promised an online co-op component, letting you team up with three friends to fend off increasing threats. It also promised the roster of heroes would grow over time with free DLC, and no random loot boxes.

It will launch on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia, though Square Enix says it has entered a partnership with PlayStation for early beta access and bonus surprises.
