Borderlands 2’s Surprise DLC Celebrates The Series’ Past, Not Its Future

It’s almost strange to start thinking of Borderlands 3 as a set-in-stone reality given just how fruitful Borderlands 2 turned out to be, with over two years of DLC packs and a full-fledged expansion. But here we are, with the sequel right around the corner, and after so many players have invested so much time into Borderlands 2, it’s only right to give the game a proper send-off. Commander Lilith & The Fight for Sanctuary isn’t so much an Irish funeral as a subdued respectful toast for the game, but within its comparatively short play time is a reminder of all things good and all things frustrating about our time on Pandora these last seven years.

Set right after the ending of Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands, Pandora is experiencing a sort of peace as several of the protagonists from Borderlands 1 and 2 analyze the Vault Key map found in the final moments of the second game. Naturally, the peace is short-lived, as a military stooge and, as Lilith puts it, “four-star a**hole” named Hector shows up to snatch the Vault Key. Apparently, there’s a military splinter faction that’s none too happy about Pandora being left to its own devices while its heroes go vault hunting, and it has concocted a plan to restore plant life and natural beauty back to the Pandoran wastelands. Sounds great, except for the fact that the gas Hector’s boys are using to restore the world has the nasty side effect of turning any humans exposed to it into hideous half-plant hybrid monsters that look and act like an eco-friendly version of The Flood from Halo. So, once again, it’s up to the Vault Hunters to take out the trash. Or compost, in this case.

Any new Borderlands story is only as good as the company you keep and the big bad they have to take down. On the downside, Hector is a lame villain not even remotely fit to shine Handsome Jack’s diamond pony or Mr. Torgue’s glorious gold chains. A few logs reveal him straight up slaughtering civilians for the hell of it, which is sure to get him on your bad side. Mostly, though, he just grumbles predictable military hard-ass threats over your Echo from time to time, until it’s time for his eye-rollingly cheap boss fight, which is utterly rife with the kind of unavoidable hits the most hectic and aggravating parts of Borderlands 2 are sometimes prone to.

His big plan doesn’t amount to much either. There’s an interesting idea in that restoring green beauty to Pandora might actually kill it–especially since martial law would be part of the package–but nothing really comes of this, aside from seeing a few familiar locales covered in giant vines and poison-gas spewing flowers. The hideous mutated humanoid plant enemies that spew from those flowers are easy enough to deal with, especially for folks jumping in with high-level characters, but Hector’s own New Pandora goon squad can get troublesome in heavy numbers. There’s nothing to suggest Pandora as a whole might be better or worse for the infection, aside from a single throwaway line when you start closing in on Hector’s lair.

So, no, this definitely isn’t breaking any new ground on the antagonist front. What makes Fight for Sanctuary worthwhile entirely comes down to your friends during this last go-around, as this DLC acts as one giant elaborate curtain call for the entire series up to this point. Right from the jump, you’re surrounded by Ellie, Dr. Tannis, and Lilith. Later, you wind up taking on squads of baddies with Mordecai and Brick. Tiny Tina shows up to guide you on a certain quest just so she can get to fire a space cannon. The love even extends to the brilliant Tales from the Borderlands. One of your first side missions involves talking to Moxxi and hearing poor, heroic Scooter’s last recorded will and testament. Cassius shows up later to help synthesize a cure to the plant infection. Unfortunately, Vaughn also shows up, and his mere presence is aggravating for a vast multitude of reasons, the most enraging in-game reason being that his wanton cowardice and ego-stroking missions are at complete odds with everyone else you take marching orders from during the course of these new quest lines.

Fight for Sanctuary isn’t a taste of things to come so much as a grand encapsulation of Borderlands’ virtues and flaws.

For much of the duration, however, Fight for Sanctuary just feels like the flimsiest excuse to put the band back together one last time, to hang out with these characters in a few familiar places, letting them play off each other in a situation where there’s tension but not world-ending stakes. It’s worth the trip for that, to remember just how much of Borderlands’ universe is enjoyable less for the looting-and-shooting but for the company you keep while you’re doing it. There are, of course, the players who are mostly just looking for any excuse to go chumming for loot in the sands of Pandora once again. There may not be as much to do that’s on-mission for Fight For Sanctuary, but those looking to jump in do at least have a bit further to grind to get to the level cap of 80. There’s also a brand-new class of elite weapons to look for. In my travels, I found two of them, and the gun that became my go-to shimmers with rainbows and sparkles, but also does the most elemental fire damage of any gun I’ve ever used in the game.

Fight for Sanctuary isn’t a taste of things to come so much as a grand encapsulation of Borderlands’ virtues and flaws. The gunplay feels dated. Level progression is often shallow and grindy. Some of the characters can be painfully obnoxious. Just as often, however, there are perfect moments when you managed to bring the right weapon to the right gunfight to gain the right reward from the loot shower that follows. You then get to celebrate with some of the most sloppy, endearing, badass misfits the galaxy has ever known. That’s as good a reason as any to revisit Borderlands 2 one last time, but also a convincing example of all the ways Borderlands 3 can drastically improve on its predecessor.

E3 2019: Halo Infinite Staying Dark Until E3 2020

Microsoft showed more of Halo Infinite during the Xbox E3 2019 briefing today and confirmed it’ll be a launch title for the new Xbox Scarlett console in 2020. It’s going to be a long time until Microsoft shows more of the game, however. Studio director Chris Lee said in a blog post that the team is staying dark on the game until E3 2020 a year from now.

“E3 2020 will be a big moment for Halo Infinite,” Lee said. “Until we reach that destination in 2020, we’ll continue to embrace the mystery and wonder of Halo and the endless opportunity and potential of this engine, this hardware and, most of all, this team.”

Lee said he’s aware that people want to “see and know more about Halo Infinite,” but unfortunately, that’s not going to happen soon.

A lot of people were expecting Microsoft to show off Halo Infinite gameplay at E3. That didn’t happen, with Microsoft instead showing off a new trailer, “Discover Hope,” which showed Master Chief in a bad spot after the events of Halo 5: Guardians.

Lee said again that Halo Infinite is being designed as a “spiritual reboot” of the Halo series. It is a game with “a vision set firmly in the future, but a foundation rooted deeply in the things our team and our fans have fallen in love with–the scope, the scale, the heroism, and the moments of spectacle and wonder that brought players together on couches, at basement LAN parties, on Xbox Live and in esports arenas for years.”

Halo Infinite has a new art direction, too, and you can pick up on a few of these flourishes in the new story trailer. “The new design for the Master Chief is, by far, the highest fidelity we have ever created to leverage the power of next generation platforms, but with a design that is Master Chief to the core and takes inspiration from the past, with color and texture and detail unavailable to us till now,” Lee said.

“This same attention to our design for the Chief is true of everything in Halo Infinite. You can see examples in the interior of our UNSC Pelican, the design of our pilot, and even details down to the UNSC logo on his flight suit. Halo Infinite is intended to embrace all that our fans have grown to love in our franchise, while evolving it to something even more visually stunning for players.”

As for Halo Infinite’s music, 343 Industries has hired Joel Yarger (God of War and Uncharted) to be the music supervisor for Halo Infinite. The game’s audio director is Sotaro “Tajeen” Tojima, and he worked with Yarger and composer Curtis Schweitzer, to make music that “stay[s] true” to the iconic music that Marty O’Donnell and Mike Salvatore wrote for the original games.

In terms of Halo Infinite’s story, Lee said it will be a story continuation from Halo 5 and Master Chief’s wider adventures, and it will feature new characters like the pilot from the new Discover Hope trailer. That being said, Lee explained that 343 is designing the game to be “perfect starting point for new players too. This story will mark the beginning of a new chapter and challenge for the Chief, but it will also respect and continue threads that led to this point.”

“If you’ve never played a Halo game before, this will be a great place to jump into the story,” Lee said. “You’re arriving in the middle a universe at war, with a sense of history underlying your entry into the world. But it will also feel fresh, full of potential, and new adventure.”

As for what the power of the new Xbox Scarlett can do for Halo Infinite, Lee said in an Xbox Wire post that it will allow the team to make the game they’ve “always dreamed of.”

“By harnessing the power of our new Slipspace Engine and combining it with the power and promise of Project Scarlett, we plan to build the Halo game we’ve always dreamed of, and share it with even more players, competitors, adventurers, and creators than ever before,” Lee said.

Halo Infinite will play on the Xbox family of consoles (and PC), meaning it will be on Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and the new Scarlett system.

E3 2019: Halo Infinite Gets First Official Trailer; Will Launch With Xbox Scarlett

During its Xbox press conference–one of the many E3 livestreams scheduled to air over the next few days–Microsoft finally gave us an official look at Halo Infinite. The game was first teased during last year’s E3, but Microsoft and 343 Studios have remained relatively quiet about the sixth mainline Halo entry since then.

Not anymore. After detailing the upcoming Xbox hardware, still code-named Scarlett, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced that Halo will launch alongside the new hardware next holiday. That led into a cinematic trailer that set up the story for this entry.

In a cinematic trailer, we saw a UNSC soldier apparently stranded. He received an alert of a nearby vessel and went to call for help, and in the process discovered the Master Chief in survival mode. After a jolt of energy, Chief was revived, but the situation was still bleak. Cortana is MIA and enemies are pounding at the ship. As you may expect, Master Chief opted to confront the emerging threat head-on. A brief teaser after the title screen suggested that Cortana will return in some capacity. Her voice can be heard saying, “I chose you because you were special. I knew we would be perfect together. And I was right.”

Halo Infinite is coming to Xbox One and PC, breaking the streak of Halo games that only launch on an Xbox console before getting PC ports.

Prior to E3, Microsoft said it was “going big,” covering 14 first-party Xbox One titles and several third-party games. Microsoft has not disappointed when it comes to Game Pass either, revealing several new games for its subscription service. The studio also revealed its next-generation Xbox console.

E3 2019: Halo Infinite Is A New Xbox Scarlett Launch Title

Microsoft’s E3 press conference gave us a glimpse at the next generation of hardware, though the company’s new Xbox is still under the Scarlett moniker for now. But with the console coming holiday 2020, Microsoft thought to sweeten the pie by announcing Halo Infinite as a launch title.

Halo Infinite and Xbox Scarlett will launch holiday 2020.

E3 2019: Phantasy Star Online 2 Is (Finally) Coming To The West

The Microsoft Xbox E3 2019 press conference–one of the major publisher and developer E3 streams that precede the actual show–just dropped a bombshell. Phantasy Star Online 2, previously exclusive to Japan, is finally launching in the West.

Fans of the original Phantasy Star Online have been clamoring for an international release. Phantasy Star Online’s story has little to do with the mainline Phantasy Star series, moving to a new planet for players to explore. As the name implies, PSO is an online multiplayer-focused variation of the fantasy RPG series. You travel between several areas, grinding through monstrous creatures and giant bosses in search of loot and coin. The original PSO is highly regarded as one of the most influential games of all time for what it did for online console play in Japan, pushing the feature in the East when no other game really was.

Phantasy Star Online 2 launched in Japan in 2012. The game continues the original’s formula of mixing futuristic tech and magic in combat, but new classes and weapon types offer far more customization. Also, like its predecessor, online multiplayer is the focus, with players able to meet in online lobbies and speak through text chat. Phantasy Star Online 2 is launching internationally in spring 2020.

Prior to E3, Microsoft said it was “going big,” covering 14 first-party Xbox One titles and several third-party games. Microsoft did not disappoint, with a showcasing that covered 60 different games. Most are launching day one on Game Pass too. The company also provided a few more details for its next-gen console, Xbox Scarlet.

E3 2019: Microsoft’s Game Streaming Service, xCloud, Coming In October

Microsoft’s new game streaming service, Project xCloud will bring cloud-based game streaming to consoles in October. Microsoft confirmed this during its Xbox E3 2019 press conference today, but didn’t share many more details about the platform.

There Microsoft’s Xbox press conference contained a lot of other big news like the official reveal of the From Software and George RR Martin collaboration game Elden Ring, and details on the next Xbox called still under the name Project Scarlett which is the most powerful console that Microsoft has ever designed coming in 2020.

E3 2019: Microsoft Confirms Tales Of Arise With Debut Trailer

Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference finally confirmed Namco Bandai’s latest entry in its long-running Tales of franchise. Titled Tales of Arise, the game was initially leaked earlier this week. However, the presentation finally confirmed its existence on an official capacity with a brief debut trailer.

With the tagline “Rise Up,” Tales of Arise looks to be taking a step in a new direction with the series. While previous games had action-RPG combat systems, this new game seems to be leaning further into those systems, resembling games like Monster Hunter World or God Eater with seamless combat and no trace of separate battle encounters. Another interesting difference is that there seems to be a greater focus on exploration with a larger open world to run around.

On the other hand, story details were revealed in the debut trailer, but we do know that you’ll be playing a silver-haired protagonist who appears to on the run from something. The game is set to launch on Xbox One and PC sometime in 2020.

E3 2019: New Xbox Console Is Called Scarlett, Releases In 2020

Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference brought us plenty of news, but undoubtedly the biggest announcement was that the company’s new Xbox console, Scarlett, is real. For now, it’s known as Project Scarlett, and Microsoft confirmed the new Xbox device will launch in Holiday 2020.

The company also announced Halo: Infinite will be a Scarlett launch title, which marks the first time a Halo game has been a launch Xbox game since the original Halo: Combat Evolved for the first Xbox.

Microsoft kept many of its Scarlett cards close to its chest, electing instead to mostly talk about its internal hardware. The console, which is yet to receive a final name, will be “four times” more powerful than the Xbox One X, Microsoft says. The company went on to say Scarlett contains a custom-engineered AMD processor and will be capable of both 8K resolution, 120 frames per second framerates, and variable refresh rates. It also supports ray-tracing and the system is equipped with a solid-state drive (SSD), something Sony has touted about PS5. Microsoft noted that the SSDS will be used as virtual RAM. The console has a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU, Radeon RDNA architecture, and GDDR6 RAM.

Scarlett was touted as a “bigger leap than any generation we’ve done before.” Xbox boss Phil Spencer also described it as the “most powerful and highest performance console we’ve ever designed.” Microsoft also very deliberately made it clear the system is designed explicitly for gaming, a notable difference from how the Xbox One was originally unveiled.

For more on the new device, read our exhaustive look at Scarlett’s hardware specs or our comprehensive article from before E3 on everything we know about Xbox Scarlett–including the rumored budget alternative. Our previous understanding of the next-gen Xbox scene was that Microsoft has more than one system coming–similar to how we have the Xbox One S and more powerful Xbox One X. Scarlett was reported to be the more powerful of the next-gen systems, and it’s the only one that was discussed during the conference.

E3 2019: Forza Horizon 4: LEGO Speed Champions DLC Announced

We’ve know for a while that there would be two big pieces of expansion content coming for Forza Horizon 4, Playground Games’ open-world racing game set in Britain. The first, Fortune Island, released late last year, and now the next chapter has been announced at the Xbox E3 2019 press conference. If you thought the Forza Horizon 3: Hot Wheels expansion was wild–well, buckle up.

Titled Lego Speed Champions, the expansion will turn Forza’s vehicles, maps, and landscapes into, well, Lego. The debut trailer showed Lego cars and Lego racers smashing through buildings and each other in explosions of bricks and color, and tracks adorned with Lego metropolises, pirate ships, Lego forests, and cute little Lego houses. It’s all set to the tune of “Everything Is Awesome”, the infectious song featured in The Lego Movie. Take a look:

Forza fans certainly won’t have to wait very long to play this one, as Playground Games announced that Lego Speed Champions would be available very soon on June 13, 2019.

In the leadup to E3, Microsoft said it was “going big” at the show, using its big presentation to cover 14 first-party Xbox One titles and several third-party games. Microsoft was also keen to push Xbox Game Pass either, revealing several new games for its subscription service. The company also officially revealed their plans for the next Xbox console, codenamed Scarlett.

E3 2019: Borderlands 2 Free DLC Serves As Bridge For Borderlands 3

Confirming rumors and leaks, Gearbox announced a new expansion for Borderlands 2 that will help lay the groundwork for the upcoming Borderlands 3 during Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference. “Commander Lilith & The Fight for Sanctuary” will be a free expansion for the first 30 days to anyone who already owns Borderlands 2 or The Handsome Collection–which also just so happens to be one of this month’s PlayStation Plus games, and available today through Xbox Game Pass.

In Commander Lilith, the Vault Map has been stolen and Sanctuary is under attack. You can play as Maya, Salvador, Axton, Zer0, Gaige, or Krieg from Borderlands 2 and its previous DLC expansions. The expansion adds a new original story including some returning cast members and new characters, but as always the real star is the loot. A new “Effervescent” tier has been added, which boasts high stats along with rainbow textures.

It also introduces new super rare equipment, new enemies and bosses including “Infected” enemies, a new Raid boss, new areas to explore, and an additional head and skin customization option for each character. The level cap is also being raised from 72 to 80. Those devoted to a challenge can try their mettle against two Overpowered Levels.

The DLC will be free to download until July 9, at which point it will cost $20. Gearbox doesn’t recommend starting the content until you’re level 30, but you can actually create a brand-new level 30 character in the Select Character screen to jump right into the Commander Lilith content.

Borderlands 3 is due in September, and was recently announced as a launch title for Google Stadia. Check out everything we know about Borderlands 3, and follow along with all of the press conferences.
