E3 2019: Square Enix Press Conference Liveblog

Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference takes place today, June 10. We’ll have a livestream of the entire event, so you can watch it alongside us. If you prefer quick text updates or can’t watch the video stream we’re liveblogging the whole thing right here.

The Tokyo-based company’s event kicks off on June 10 at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET (5 AM BST / 2 PM AET on June 11), the same time slot that Sony’s press conference would typically occupy. With no Sony at E3 this year, Square Enix has swooped in to take that coveted opportunity to showcase its own games, some of which are among the most anticipated at E3. So be sure to come back to this page to see our reactions in real-time as we cover the conference. Once it ends, we’ll put together a full roundup of the hottest news out of the event.

We don’t know the full slate of what Square Enix will highlight, but there are two games in particular that would make it a big event. We’re likely to see more from Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the publisher has confirmed the official reveal of its mysterious Marvel’s Avengers game, which recently had some details leak. The company did also tease that this year’s presentation promises “another exciting lineup of titles.”

E3 2019: Ubisoft Press Conference Liveblog

Ubisoft’s E3 2019 press conference will be livestreamed for all to see, but if for whatever reason you can’t watch the video feed, or want a little bit of GameSpot-flavored color commentary alongside the announcement, we’ll be liveblogging the whole thing right here.

Proceedings begin on June 10 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET / 9 PM BST (6 AM AET on June 11), so be sure to come back to this page to see it all unfold. Following the event’s conclusion, we’ll have a full breakdown of the hottest news.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft’s ambitious pirate-action game, Skull & Bones, is skipping E3 this year as it has been delayed to April 2020. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is also a no-show this year, sadly.

However, there are plenty of other titles to look forward to from the prolific game developer and publisher. We should see a more in-depth look at Ghost Recon Breakpoint, scheduled to launch on October 4. Both Roller Champions and Watch Dogs Legion leaked prior to the conference, and it’s possible these are two of three unannounced triple-A games launching early next year. Another leak, something called Ubisoft Pass, could be detailed during the conference as well.

While Bethesda won’t be talking about The Elder Scrolls 6 or Starfield, the company has its hands full with other ongoing projects out in the wild right now. We’ll probably see something new for the recently-released Rage 2, but there’s also Doom Eternal and Wolfenstein: Youngblood to be shown. There may be more announcements for Fallout 76 as well.

E3 2019: See The Giant Posters Outside The Convention Center

E3 2019 is about to begin. The annual gaming expo officially kicks off in only a few days, and just as every year, publishers are hanging massive posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center and other buildings throughout downtown LA to hype up the event.

GameSpot is now on the ground in LA, and we’ve taken some pictures of the giant video game posters we’ve seen decorating the city. Many of this year’s biggest releases are featured prominently around town; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the upcoming reboot of the massive shooter franchise, has the honor of adorning the entrance of the LACC’s Wes Hall this year, greeting attendees as they make their way into the show, but it certainly isn’t the only game represented; Bethesda’s Doom Eternal is gracing the Hotel Figueroa, and we’ve also spotted a poster of CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077.

You can take a look at some of the E3 posters we’ve seen in the gallery below. We’ll continue to add more photos as the week progresses. We’ll also have photos of the show floor once it opens, so be sure to check back on GameSpot for our full coverage of E3 2019.

No Caption Provided

E3 officially begins on Tuesday, June 11, when the show floor opens to the press and public. However, many of the industry’s biggest publishers will be holding press conferences and other events in the days leading up to then, including Microsoft, Bethesda, Square Enix, and Nintendo. The one notable exception is Sony; for the first time since it entered the industry, the PS4 maker has decided not to attend E3.

We’ve already gotten a wealth of news before E3 has even begun. On June 5, Nintendo aired a special Pokemon Direct, which revealed a ton of new details about Pokemon Sword and Shield. The next day, Google streamed its first Stadia Connect presentation, sharing new information about its upcoming game streaming platform. And that’s nothing to say of the numerous leaks and rumors to crop up before the show. You can find all the biggest news and announcements on our E3 hub.

Ahead Of E3 2019, PUBG Launches Erangel Map Remake On PC Test Servers

A development video for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has teased some of the new content scheduled to come to the battle royale game. In the video (which is embedded below), PUBG executive producer and head of development TS Jang said that the game will continue to evolve going forward, including a remake of the original map, Erangel. New movement mechanics are also being added and future seasons will each follow a predetermined theme.

Looking towards the future, Jang said PUBG would use themed seasons going forward. “Under the banner of one overall theme,” he continued, “fans can expect each season to debut new content, features, and a Survivor Pass.” The upcoming Season 4 will focus on updating Erangel, remaking PUBG’s original map with enhanced graphics and assets. The new map is releasing on PUBG’s PC Test Server this weekend continuing into E3 week. The test is already live and will continue through June 11 at 8 PM PT / 11 PM ET (June 12 at 4 AM BT / 1 PM AET).

“We’ll continue to develop this balance between survival and combat strategies so that players will be able to experience more varied gameplay,” Jang said. “Examples of this are the upcoming ledge grab that helps expand movement, the BRDM, which is a new armored vehicle, and lastly, continued weapon balancing.”

In the accompanying gameplay footage, the ledge grab seems to expand a player’s ability to move about the map both vertically and horizontally, allowing them to jump up and climb atop structures or grab rooftops after leaping from a nearby building. The video goes on to show the ledge grab makes previously unreachable areas accessible. The BRDM, meanwhile, is an amphibious vehicle. A first for PUBG, the armored tank-like truck protects its inhabitants whether driving down the road or across a river.

“While Weapon Mastery focuses on combat, we plan to expand progression elements further and focus on survival elements,” Jang continued. “PUBG strikes a harmonious balance between combat and survival. As such, in addition to emphasizing gunplay, we want to focus on survival elements, so our players can keep track of stats and receive rewards for those accomplishments as well.”

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and mobile devices. For what it did for the battle royale subgenre, PUBG is one of our most influential games of the 21st century.

Pre-E3 2019: This Week’s Schedule And Biggest News

Officially speaking, E3 2019 is a three-day event that begins on June 11. The show floor is open through Thursday, with dozens of companies showcasing their wares to media, retailers, fellow developers, and, in recent years, the public. But as far as fans are concerned, E3 is a much longer event: press conferences are scheduled for the days preceding the expo, but those–and other reveal events–have come earlier and earlier. This week before E3 has been especially busy.

Today, June 7, is looking to be fairly light in terms of officially announced events. That said, it’s not like we’ll be going without any news: THQ Nordic’s third of three game announcements was slated for today, and it’s turned out to be a Destroy All Humans remake.

Wednesday was home to a Pokemon-centric Nintendo Direct, which revealed new details about Nintendo Switch’s Sword and Shield. Thursday followed with two back-to-back events: Google Stadia Connect and a Destiny 2 livestream. Google confirmed Stadia’s price, release date, and confirmed games, alongside sharing many other details and unveiling some brand-new games–including the rumored Baldur’s Gate III from Larian Studios, the developer of Divinity: Original Sin. Destiny 2 was also showcased during the event before Bungie held its own stream to outline the game’s future, which includes cross-save support across all platforms (including the new Stadia version) and the Shadowkeep expansion.

Before all this, there were other major announcements made recently; we got Death Stranding’s release date and trailer and learned about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Beyond that, there are also the rumors and leaks that continue to sprout up. Ubisoft had a roller derby game leak recently, and then this week brought word that Watch Dogs Legion is in development. This third Watch Dogs game has now been confirmed for a reveal during Ubisoft’s press conference on Monday. And it looks as if Ninja Theory’s new game has also been revealed through a leaked video before it shows up during Microsoft’s E3 press conference on Sunday.

The wide swath of officially announced events coming this week is getting so large you may have trouble keeping track. So for your convenience, we’ve compiled a schedule of everything going on this week. Be sure to check out our full press conference schedule for what you can watch and when.

Apple WWDC Event – Monday, June 3

This isn’t a first, as Apple often targets its WWDC event for early June, and its proximity to E3 has been noted as Apple ventured further into gaming offerings on the App Store. But in the overall sequence of E3-adjacent events, it seems to be the first out of the gate. This year’s WWDC announced support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers for iOS and Apple TV.

Pokemon Sword & Shield Nintendo Direct – Wednesday, June 5

Nintendo doubtless has loads to show at E3, but it’s giving more details on one of its biggest franchises its own time slot. Pokemon Sword & Shield, the next main installment in the hit franchise for Nintendo Switch, will have a dedicated presentation on Wednesday morning. It will be about 15 minutes long, but as Nintendo showed in its recent Super Mario Maker 2 presentation, it can pack a lot of details into that amount of time. Check out when and how to watch the Pokemon Direct for more details.

Update: The Pokemon Nintendo Direct is over, and it reveals a ton of new details about what’s coming in Sword and Shield. We got a release date (November 15) and a look at many of the new gameplay systems in place, such as the open-world Wild Areas where you’ll encounter raid battles that can be played alongside players. Check out all of coverage through the links below, and then see how we did on our predictions.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Space Monkey Report – Wednesday, June 5

Ubisoft has outlined some of its plans for E3 2019, but has also stated flatly that Beyond Good & Evil 2 won’t be among them. Still, the pre-E3 period won’t be entirely without BG&E news, as the game is planning the next of its Space Monkey Report streams for the Wednesday prior. These have been semi-regular events updating fans on the progress of the game. Ubisoft’s decision to hold back from E3 suggests it won’t be chock full of big reveals, but if you’ve been looking forward to more Beyond Good & Evil, it should provide some interesting tidbits.

Update: The stream has concluded, and it didn’t reveal much in the way of meaningful details. Ubisoft shared that more than 600,000 people are now in the Space Monkey program, and that they’ll be the first to get to play the game. We also got a look at some concept art and other peeks at what to expect, but not much else.

Google Stadia Connect – Thursday, June 6 (9 AM PT)

Google will make good on its promise to reveal price and launch details for its Stadia streaming service this week, with the first of its “Stadia Connect” presentations ready to debut on Thursday. The company has confirmed that the presentation will outline launch plans, including game announcements and a price reveal. Check out when and how to watch the Stadia presentation for more details.

Update: Google finally confirmed the details we’ve been waiting to hear. We heard about how much Stadia costs and when it’s coming. Google continued to outline its vision for the platform, as detailed in our news coverage linked below.

Destiny 2 Next Chapter – Thursday, June 6 (10 AM PT)

Just after the Google Stadia announcement, Bungie will be explaining its plans for Destiny 2. The current season of content is coming to a close, and with Bungie now split with publisher Activision fans have wondered what will happen now. The “Next Chapter” announcement will explain these next steps, and given that it’s targeting the announcement right next to E3, it probably isn’t just going into maintenance mode.

Update: Bungie has shown us what the future of Destiny 2 looks like, and it involves more ways for new players to dive in, with a la carte pricing for standalone pieces of content, and cross-save support that allows players to move between platforms. That even includes PS4, which was rumored before the event to not offer this feature.

EA Play – Saturday, June 8 (9:30 AM PT)

Electronic Arts is once again forgoing E3 proper, instead holding a fan-focused event at a nearby location. This year, though, it’s not having a formal press conference at EA Play. It will hold a series of livestreams covering several of its upcoming games, beginning with Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. Others on tap include Apex Legends and its Season 2 Battle Pass, Battlefield V, FIFA 20, Madden NFL 20, and The Sims 4. Check out how and when to watch EA Play for more details.

EA Play Livestream Start Time

  • 9:30 AM PT
  • 12:30 PM ET
  • 5:30 PM BST
  • 2:30 AM AET (June 9)

Nintendo Invitational Tournaments – Saturday, June 8 (11 AM PT)

Between its Pokemon-focused Nintendo Direct on Wednesday and its E3 Nintendo Direct the following Tuesday morning, Nintendo has one more event during the weekend. It will be hosting a series of tournaments throughout the day on Saturday. The Super Mario Maker 2 tournament promises a lengthy look at the game to be released later in June, while the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament could drop some hints regarding upcoming DLC characters. A Splatoon 2 tournament is also planned to ink up the place.

  • 11 AM PT
  • 2 PM ET
  • 7 PM BST

E3 2019: Baldur’s Gate 3 Release Date Might Not Be This Year

Despite being leaked ahead of the event, one of the biggest surprises to come out of Google’s pre-E3 Stadia Connect presentation was the reveal of Baldur’s Gate III, a new installment in the beloved RPG series by Divinity: Original Sin II developer Larian. The studio has already confirmed the game is coming to PC and Stadia, the latter of which launches in November. But while some might have assumed it would be a debut title for Stadia, we don’t yet know Baldur’s Gate 3’s release date. From the sound of it, however, there’s a chance it won’t be in 2019.

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Larian Studios founder and director Swen Vincke about the upcoming RPG. We asked Vincke what he felt his studio would be able to contribute to the Baldur’s Gate franchise, and his response indicated that the game may not release this year:

“We’re … in 2019 now–so it’s not going to necessarily launch this year–but in 2019, the world has moved on tremendously. With Divinity: Original Sin, we’ve demonstrated that we can make what people call classic RPG values, that we can make modern. You will see a modern version of Baldur’s Gate, but it’s going to be true to the core of Dungeons & Dragons more than anything.”

We asked Vincke more directly about when we could expect Baldur’s Gate III to launch, but he vaguely replied “when it’s ready.” As he explained, “We’re going to take all the time we need to make this one really, really good. I think people have been waiting for 20 years, so they can afford to wait a little bit longer.”

While Vincke wouldn’t commit to a release window, that doesn’t necessarily mean players won’t be able to play Baldur’s Gate III this year. Both Divinity: Original Sin II and its predecessor initially released in early access before they formally launched, so there is a possibility that Larian will take a similar approach with Baldur’s Gate III.

Larian did shed a bit more light on the game during a recent Community Update video. While largely a comedic skit, the video does touch more on ceremorphosis, the gruesome process by which a humanoid creature becomes a Mindflayer–as seen in Baldur Gate III’s reveal trailer. Larian also reaffirms that Baldur’s Gate III will be a “big grand adventure” that’s “true to D&D lore” and has a choice-driven narrative.

We may not know when Baldur’s Gate III will release, but we do know that Google Stadia will launch this November as part of the Founder’s Edition, which will cost $130 / £120. The Founder’s Edition will be the only way to play Stadia at launch, but Google will also offer a Stadia Pro subscription that gives players access to a library of games, as well as a free version called Stadia Base coming next year.
