Mortal Kombat 11 Will Be Free To Play This Weekend (PS4, Xbox One)

One of 2019’s biggest games will soon be open to everyone, but only for a short time. Starting this Friday, October 11, you can jump into Mortal Kombat 11 on PS4 or Xbox One and play for free. The free trial period will run all weekend, ending Monday, October 14. Of course, you’ll need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold for online play, but if you’re not subscribed to either, you can still download the trial and access offline content.

The free trial includes enough content to keep you busy this weekend. You’ll be able to play two chapters of Mortal Kombat 11’s story mode as well as local and online 1v1 matches with the base roster. You’ll also have access to The Krypt, Fatality training, and the Towers of Time mode, the latter of which you’ll be able to play as Terminator, Nightwolf, and Shang Tsung.

If you like the game, you can grab it for 40% off at the PlayStation and Xbox Stores this weekend, dropping the price of the standard edition to $36 from $60. The Premium edition, which normally sells for $90, will be discounted to $54 and includes the Kombat Pack, adding new playable characters, character skins, and exclusive gear sets. And as usual with these free trial periods, any progress you make will be rolled over into the full game if you purchase it.

In GameSpot’s Mortal Kombat 11 review, critic Edmond Tran had excellent things to say about the game’s deep, yet accessible fighting system, diverse roster of classic characters and interesting new additions, and more. Mortal Kombat 11 earned a 9/10.

“MK11 isn’t just a sequel for series fans and NetherRealm devotees, it’s a gateway into the realm of fighting games for anyone who has a passing interest in watching ruthless warriors beat each other silly,” he wrote. “Streamlined mechanics keep the act of fighting furiously exciting no matter what your skill level, and comprehensive tutorials encourage you to dig into the nitty-gritty. There’s a diverse roster of interesting characters and playstyles, and the story mode is an entertaining romp. The randomization of Krypt rewards and the odd issue with the game’s always-online nature can occasionally chip away at your patience, but Mortal Kombat 11 absolutely hits where it matters.”

Apex Legends Vaults Are Now Open; Here’s What’s Inside And How To Unlock Them

One of the big features of Apex Legends Season 3 is the introduction of the new map World’s Edge, which includes three locked vaults containing purple and gold loot inside. At the start of the season, there wasn’t a way to open them since vault keys were not available–the vault doors also had a countdown timer that aligned to Wednesday, October 9 at 10AM PT / 1PM ET / 6PM BST. However, vault keys are attainable right now.

The first thing you’ll need to do is find a floating cargo bot, of which there are several roaming around the map; these can contain vault keys. In our experience, we got a vault key by shooting the bot down when it was flashing blue and among the loot was a vault key (we are not privy to the chances of getting one and if the tier-color affects this). The three vault locations then get marked on your map, all of which are within tunnels.

When you make it to one, it’ll take three seconds to get the door open and you’ll be rewarded with several purple-tier and gold-tier items. The gear you can pick up includes purple and gold backpacks, knockdown shields, body shields, helmets, and a few weapon attachments (we got a barrel stabilizer and shotgun bolt). There doesn’t appear to be weapons or ammo within these vaults, however. You can check out screenshots from our experience below:

We have Apex Legends Season 3 covered from several different angles. If you haven’t jumped into the game yet or are a lapsed player, read about why now is a good time to jump into Apex Legends. We also have a rundown of everything new that comes with this new season of Apex Legends and a breakdown of the new map World’s Edge (including a spicy guide on where to drop).

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. You play as Cal Kestis, a young Jedi Padawan who managed to escape Order 66 and is now on the run from the Empire. However, you’re accidentally discovered and forced to go on the run with a former Jedi Knight and a bad-tempered pilot–both of whom are working together to bring back the Jedi Order. All the while, you’re hunted by one of Darth Vader’s Imperial Inquisitors, the Second Sister, and the Jedi-killing Purge Troopers.

Developed by Respawn, Fallen Order has similar features similar to the Soulsborne games–like losing currency upon death and meditating at idols to level up–and utilizes a parry-focused combat system that’s reminiscent of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Exploration, on the other hand, is inspired by Metroid Primeencouraging you to return to old locations once you’ve acquired certain powers to reach previously unreachable areas.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order Drops RAM Requirement Significantly

EA’s big new Star Wars game, Jedi Fallen Order, is coming out in November. The publisher has now clarified a key detail about the PC version. EA’s Ben Walke confirmed on Twitter that the recommended specs for Jedi Fallen Order now call for 16 GB of RAM instead of 32 GB.

The recommended specs listing for Jedi Fallen Order previously displayed the 32 GB requirement. It’s unclear why the RAM requirement is being cut in half. When the 32 GB requirement was originally announced, some fans balked at the big number.

For comparison, some of 2019’s biggest and beefiest games, including Gears 5, The Division 2, and Borderlands 3, all call for 16 GB of RAM, so the 32 GB requirement for Jedi Fallen Order took some by surprise.

Jedi Fallen Order launches on November 15 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. You can see the minimum and recommended specs below, as posted by PC Gamer.

PS5 Vs. Xbox Scarlett: Specs, Games, Backwards Compatibility, And More

Now that Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 and confirmed more of the next-gen console’s specs, we can begin diving into the differences and similarities between the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation. Granted, we don’t have enough to give a just comparison between Project Scarlett and the PS5, but we can at least start with what Microsoft and Sony have already given us.

In the following article, we dive into the differences and similarities between Microsoft and Sony’s respective next-gen consoles. Though both companies have been keeping details close to the chest, they have revealed certain specifications for their respective consoles, as well as what those nitty-gritty numbers translate into in a performance sense. In response to the growing market of players who are buying games digitally, both companies have laid out how storage will work on their next-gen consoles too. We go into all that, and more, below.

Names

Sony is the only one of the two to announce the name of its next-gen console. And–surprising literally no one–it’s PlayStation 5, or PS5 for short.

Microsoft refers to its next-gen console as Project Scarlett. For the sake of convenience, we’re going to refer to the console as Xbox Scarlett, or Scarlett for short.

Release Date

Both consoles are currently scheduled to release within the same window, the holiday season in 2020. Much like the Xbox One and PS4 before them, Scarlett and PS5 will be going head to head during the biggest shopping window within the same year. If you’re planning on buying both, you may want to begin saving now.

Specifications

There’s a lot about the exact specifications of each console that we don’t know yet, like how much each one is going to cost. We do have enough to at least begin comparing Scarlett and the PS5 though. Both use different CPUs, for example. As you’ll see below, it’s not all different though. Both next-gen consoles will support ray-tracing, for instance, which will allow them to better simulate light in games.

Performance

Regardless of which console you go for, you’re getting an upgrade. Scarlett’s specs suggest a much stronger console than the Xbox One X, while the PS5 sees a similar improvement over the PS4 Pro.

Storage

Both Scarlett and the PS5 are using solid-state drives, or SSDs, this time around. PlayStation 5 users should see a noticeable improvement in the time it takes for a game to load on the next-gen console in comparison to the PS4 as a result. The same is true for Xbox Scarlett in comparison to Xbox One, which Microsoft already confirmed at E3 2019; but by how much has yet to be announced. That said, results will vary by game.

For more:

Online Service

Neither Microsoft nor Sony have announced how online multiplayer will work on their next-gen consoles, but it would not be surprising to see both Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus make their return. Given its success, it’s also probable that Xbox Game Pass will return on Scarlett.

The key difference this time around will be cloud-streaming, which has picked up in recent months–with Google entering the fray in November 2019 with Stadia. Microsoft has Project xCloud, which will likely make its way onto Scarlett in some form. Sony already has a game-based cloud-streaming service, PlayStation Now, which presumably would be supported on PS5 to some capacity.

Backwards Compatibility

Both Scarlett and PS5 will have backwards compatibility support. Scarlett will support backwards compatibility with original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games. What will and won’t be playable on PS5 is a little trickier, largely because of PSVR. Sony hasn’t announced whether their next-gen console will support the current-gen headset–which is mandatory for playing certain PS4 console exclusives, like Beat Saber.

For more:

Playable Games At Launch

Sony has yet to announce any launch titles for PS5, but we do know Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the Uncharted and Shadow of the Colossus remasters, is working on “a big one.” Microsoft has revealed only one for Scarlett: Halo Infinite.

Destiny 2 Shadowkeep Weekly Reset Guide, October 8: Nightfall: The Ordeal, Nightmare Hunts

Once you’re through the story campaign of Destiny 2‘s new expansion, Shadowkeep, you’re likely going to start working to increase your character’s Power level so you can take on the game’s greatest challenges, like the Garden of Salvation raid. To do that, you need gear that’s designated “Powerful,” which will advance your overall Power level beyond the soft cap of 900. A variety of weekly activities provide Powerful drops–but while some are straightforward, like completing Nightfall Strikes, others are less clear.

Here’s a quick guide to everything new in the first weekly reset for Shadowkeep, including a rundown of the new Nightfall Hunts and where to get what you need to complete Eris Morn’s memory.

Nightfall: The Ordeal

The Ordeal is Shadowkeep’s new version of the traditional Nightfall Strike. You can turn up its difficulty as high as Power level 980, and the tougher you make it, the more likely the mode is to drop Exotic gear as a reward. It seems that each week gets one Strike in particular for The Ordeal. This week, that Strike is Shadowkeep’s new one, The Scarlet Keep. Completing five Adept-level Nightfall runs will earn you a Powerful gear drop. Ordeal runs at a higher difficulty count more toward your progress for the Powerful.

Crucible

The Crucible also has some rotating elements each week. You can always play Control, Survival, and Rumble no matter when you log in, but the weekly rotation also offers new modes. Here’s what’s on offer this week:

  • Team Scorched: 6v6 using Scorch cannons (Valor)
  • Countdown: 4v4. Attacking team tries to set a charge in the other team’s territory, while the defending team tries to defuse it (Valor)

Nightmare Hunts

Each week brings access to three new Nightmare hunts on the moon, and with each one comes a particular Nightmare Essence. Those essences can be used to make Dreambane armor and weapons on the moon. You can also earn a Powerful gear drop for completing three hunts each week, at any difficulty level.

Essence Of Fear — Phogoth

You’ll head into the Summoning Pits in the Hellmouth for this Nightmare Hunt. Killing Phogoth at the end earns you an Essence of Isolation, which can be transformed into Dreambane chest armor at the Lectern of Enchantment. You’ll get this one during the course of the Shadowkeep main campaign.

Essence Of Isolation — Taniks, The Scarred

Taniks is another Nightmare you’ll encounter during the Shadowkeep story campaign; you’ll need to bring him down to earn the Essence of Isolation. The Lectern of Enchantment can forge Dreambane gauntlets from it, allowing you to re-roll your armor.

Essence Of Rage — Dominus Ghaul

The only Nightmare who can help you get a weapon this week is Ghaul. You’ll find him near the Circle of Bones; defeat him, and you’ll get the Essence of Rage. That can be converted into the One Small Step shotgun by the Lectern of Enchantment, provided you find the Fangs of Shun’Gath in the World’s Grave.

Eris’s Memory: Vall Tarlowe

No Caption Provided

Each week, you can help Eris Morn dispel the phantoms of her dead fireteam by completing a short quest. This week, it’s Vell Tarlowe, a powerful Titan who was overwhelmed by Thralls and killed in the Hellmouth, during the team’s ill-fated attempt to destroy Crota. To get rid of the phantom, you’ll need to find Vell Tarlowe’s Titan mark.

To start the mission, talk to Eris. She’ll give you the Memory of Vell Tarlowe mission, which first requires you to replay a mission from the Shadowkeep story campaign. You can access that mission from the Director, and you don’t have to do anything special to complete the step–just finish the mission as normal.

Next, you’ll need to venture into Nightmare Hunts in order to gather the pieces of Vell’s mark. In order to find the pieces, you need to defeat enemies on the Hunts with melee strikes. Any enemies will do, and it doesn’t seem as though your melee ability has to be fully charged to make pieces of the mark drop from enemies. It also appears that roaming, melee-focused Super abilities, such as Hunters’ Arc Staff, can count as melee strikes.

You’ll need 25 pieces of Vell’s mark, but they won’t drop from every melee kill you execute. The good news is, they drop in batches of three, so you really only need to get nine drops to finish the mission. We managed to complete this step in two Nightmare Hunts, so it really does go quickly.

When you’re done, head to the Sanctuary on the moon and go through the portal to find Eris. Give her the mark to dispel Vell’s phantom and earn your Powerful drop from the nearby chest. You can also hang around and talk to Eris twice more to get a little more backstory about Vell Tarlowe and his role on Eris’s fireteam.

Destiny 2’s Tower Is Quietly Expanding

Things in Destiny 2 are looking a little different, and not just because we have entered the second week of Shadowkeep content. The looter-shooter’s social area is now undergoing some sort of mysterious construction.

The construction can be seen directly behind Ikora to the west of the Tower. It seems reminiscent of the construction work that happened in the hangar, with scaffolding and railing and several NPCs hard at work, but it’s all brand-new. This construction scene was not there prior to Destiny 2’s reset earlier today.

No Caption Provided

Ikora serves as the game’s main NPC for the new Vex Offensive activity. The Vex Offensive activity will have a big conclusion on November 19.

Bungie has not spoken publicly about Destiny 2’s Tower construction, but the developer has confirmed that Shadowkeep is the start of a new approach to Destiny 2 that focuses on making the game feel like a living world. As a result, some content will come and go each season to give the impression that the world is evolving overtime.

In other Destiny 2 news, players are deciphering a puzzle that is not part of the actual game. Owners of the Destiny 2 Collector’s Edition receive a Cryptoglyph that serves as both a decorative piece and a combination lock. Cracking the code reveals a slip of paper with a URL, which then sends you on a series of clues. It has yet to be fully solved.

In our Destiny 2: Shadowkeep review, we said, “Shadowkeep represents a shift in the fundamentals of Destiny 2, and that has only improved the game. Returning to the moon is full of spooky fun, and while Shadowkeep might not be as huge as Forsaken, it still provides some impressive additions to the world that will take time to fully explore. More meaningful choices in Shadowkeep are pushing me to think beyond just packing my most powerful guns and shooting everything in my path. These are improvements that represent a giant leap forward for Destiny 2.”

Pokemon Go Bringing Mewtwo Back For Raid Hour Event Tonight Only

Pokemon Go players are still able to encounter Mewtwo in EX Raids, but the Legendary Psychic Pokemon is making a brief return to standard Raid Battles as well. Niantic is bringing Mewtwo back for a Legendary Raid Hour event tonight only, October 8, giving you another chance to catch one that knows the rare Psychic-type attack Psystrike.

What Time Is Mewtwo Raid Hour?

The makeup Mewtwo Raid Hour takes place around the world from 6-7 PM local time. During that brief window of time, Mewtwo Raids will take place at most local Gyms. Unlike the aforementioned EX Raids, which require an invitation, you only need to have a Raid Pass to participate in a standard Raid Battle. You can get one of these for free when you spin the Photo Disc at a Gym, but you can only hold one free one at a time.

What Makes This Mewtwo Special?

The Mewtwo you can currently encounter in EX Raids knows the Ghost-type attack Shadow Ball, but the one appearing at Gyms tonight knows Psystrike, a powerful Psychic-type attack first introduced in Pokemon Black and White.

On top of that, you’ll also have a chance of encountering a Shiny Mewtwo during tonight’s event. Your odds of coming across one are slim, however, so if you’re hoping to add a Shiny Mewtwo to your collection, you’ll need to participate in as many Raids as possible.

Mewtwo Battle Tips

Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-type, which makes it weak to Dark, Ghost, and Bug Pokemon. Your best bet for battling it will be to bring along monsters like Tyranitar, Scizor, or Pokemon Go’s current Legendary, Giratina. Gengar will also be effective against Mewtwo, but its part Poison typing means it’ll take super-effective damage in return, so it likely won’t last too long. If you’ve caught a Mewtwo that knows Shadow Ball, it’ll also be a big help, since it’ll dish out super-effective damage and resist the Psystrike attack.

Once tonight’s Raid Hour event ends, Mewtwo will leave standard Raids again, and Altered Forme Giratina will return. You’ll have until October 17 to catch that Pokemon, after which point it’ll be replaced by an as-yet unannounced Legendary. For tips on how to catch one, be sure to check out our Giratina Raid guide.

Apex Legends Season 3: Hottest Drop Spots On New Map, World’s Edge

Apex Legends got a huge content drop for Season 3: Meltdown, which changed Respawn’s battle royale game in several different ways–including making it easier to jump into for newcomers. Among the changes was the (very temporary) removal of Kings Canyon, which has been replaced with a brand-new map, World’s Edge. Despite its larger size, there are a few places on the map where players seem to congregate, making for ideal drop locations if you want to begin your matches with a fight.

In the following article, we’ve highlighted some of the more interesting places to drop on World’s Edge, a guide that could completely change once the golden vaults open. For now, World’s Edge doesn’t have specific locations of concentrated high-tier loot. There are, however, places on the map where you can find both decent loot and a means for quickly relocating without having to run across a wide-open area. It’s in these places where you’ll typically have to fight off other squads right at the start of a match. We may update this article as more hot drop locations develop.

The Train

Don’t be fooled by Thermal Station, Lava City, and The Dome; the moving train on World’s Edge is the hottest drop spot on the entire map. There is no other place on World’s Edge that consistently attracts as many squads as that train. Train tracks snake through the entire map, so the starting point for the train is usually different between matches. However, there are a few consistencies with the train: it almost always has three Phoenix Kits on it, typically three or more squads go for it at the start of every match, and there are never enough guns on board for everyone.

This means the first few starting moments on the train are usually a full-on fistfight between several different squads, many of which are trying to melee enemies off the moving train to make looting easier. There’s no exact science to how loot on the train works, but I’ve typically seen the guns spread out pretty evenly among its connected cars. So if you see someone else loot a gun from the back of the train, you’re probably not going to find another there. Either punch that sucker straight in the face and hope to end them before they get a shot off or run further up into the train in search of another gun.

No Caption Provided

As a side note, if you’re struggling with winning at the train, try dropping at the station it’s scheduled to stop at first. The train almost always spawns right before one of its stops, giving you about half a minute to loot in the safety of a building before storming out and boarding the train before it leaves. The Thermal Station stop (circled in the image above) is perhaps the best opportunity for this strategy as it will almost always have good enough loot to at least overwhelm those who land on the train–who are probably still fighting each other and thus have all the good loot split among three or more squads. Obviously you can also just land here if you’re looking for a place to loot, but without the temptation of the train, you’re unlikely to run into other squads to fight.

The Sniper’s Cliff

This cliff (circled in the picture below) isn’t marked as a landmark on the map. Technically, this small location is tied to the larger nearby landmark, Skyhook–which almost always attracts a squad or two. Unfortunately, Skyhook is so big and contains so many multilevel buildings, it’s difficult to find enemy squads right at the start. Having a sniper rifle and vantage where you have a lookout over almost all of Skyhook provides a huge advantage in hunting down the squads that landed in the location with you. The sniper’s cliff provides both.

No Caption Provided

My friends and I call this spot the sniper’s cliff because in almost every match, the loot containers on this mountain provide sniper rifles and at least one sniper scope. The Triple-Take and new Charge Rifle seem to be the more popular drops, but the Longbow DMR and G7 Scout regularly show up too. At the top of the cliff, you have the perfect sniping perch for raining death on those who land in Skyhook. The bottom provides a nice getaway, giving you an entire mountain to mask your approach towards Skyhook or Drill Site. About halfway down the cliff is a zipline that takes you straight into Skyhook for a riskier, albeit faster approach.

As more and more squads have learned of this location, the spot has also increasingly become a hot drop. It’s not really there yet, but you can expect to land on the cliff alongside one other squad on occasion. Then it becomes a frantic duel with sniper rifles, which is a whole different type of exhilarating panic than the close quarters firefights on the train.

The Construction Site

Like sniper’s cliff, this spot is simply a part of a larger landmark–in this case, Capitol City. Located in the southwest portion of the city (circled in the picture below), the construction site is an unfinished building that’s similarly structured like Construction Site on Call of Duty: Black Ops IV’s original Blackout map. This provides several different levels of loot for squads to parse through, which typically encourages half a dozen teams to make this spot their drop site.

No Caption Provided

There are actually two different unfinished buildings here, both connected by a long zipline. Between the two it seems like the one with the respawn beacon on the top of it is more popular, but regardless of which you go to, you’re probably only getting a few seconds before someone starts attacking at you. Sometimes it may be someone throwing up grenades from a lower floor and other times it could be someone shooting down on you from an upper floor. Make sure someone on your team finds a good long-range weapon because there’s almost always another team sniping you from the other unfinished building.

There’s no real strategy for winning the construction site other than ensuring you’re wearing a good pair of headphones. With so many levels, it can be confusing to tell where people are by sight alone. You’ll usually hear someone on another level long before you see them. Maybe bring Crypto along if you decide to land here. His drone provides the safest way of scouting other floors. Bloodhound works too, but I’ve found Crypto to be the better of the two choices.

Fuel Depot

Fuel Depot (circled in the picture below) is one of the smallest landmarks on World’s Edge but it’s also perfectly situated, making it an ideal place to hold up in. Of course, because it’s so good, it usually attracts at least one or two squads at the start of every match. Because of the loot scarcity, it’s one of the harder landmarks to win, but doing so ensures you’ll be well situated for wherever you need to go next.

No Caption Provided

To understand why squads love dropping at Fuel Depot, you only need to see where it is on the map. Fuel Depot is the closest World’s Edge has to a middle, so landing there gives you the highest probability of being within the safe zone at the start, or at least close enough to it that you won’t have to travel far. It’s also perfectly situated between a lot of other drop spots. On the off chance that no other squad lands in Fuel Depot, there’s a high probability that at least one will wander through Fuel Depot at some point in the game and bring the fight to you.

To the north of Fuel Depot is a watchtower that allows you to snipe anyone trying to escape Capitol City. To the east lies a tunnel leading to Sorting Factory, providing you cover if you want to venture that way as well as blindspots for setting up ambushes for approaching squads. On the west side is a zipline that leads to half a dozen houses full of more loot, giving your squad a place to easily escape to if Fuel Depot gets too hot. To the south is a massive gorge, forcing enemy squads to either climb up to the aforementioned collection of buildings and zipline over to you or drop into the gorge and climb up to you–which gives you the high ground.

The Town Of Overlook

Like Fuel Depot, Overlook is one of the smaller landmarks on World’s Edge. Just outside Overlook is a small collection of buildings (circled in the picture below). For whatever reason, these buildings are more of a hot drop than Overlook. If I had to hazard a guess as to why, I’d assume it’s because the buildings are slightly spread apart, presenting more opportunities to fight out in the open. Meanwhile, Overlook is a lot more enclosed, presenting a great place to bunker down and defend.

No Caption Provided

It might seem like there isn’t very good loot here, and that’s partially true. However, just outside of the town is a long hole that descends into an underground tunnel where there are train tracks. On either side of the track are loot containers, which usually have decent armor and weapons in them. Just dive into the hole, grab what you need, and zipline back up. The town that overlooks Overlook won’t know what hit them.

Just remember to be careful. Even if Overlook itself isn’t a hot drop, it doesn’t change that the location is somewhat of a popular spot. Whoever wins the landmark is most likely coming for you once they’ve healed up.
