Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, More EA Games Coming To Steam

Since EA launched its Origin service, it has been the only place that players have been able to purchase the publisher’s games on PC, but that will change very soon. EA has announced it is bringing a variety of its titles to Steam, beginning with next month’s highly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Ahead of its release on November 15, Respawn’s upcoming Star Wars game is now available to pre-order on Valve’s storefront, marking the first new EA game to hit Steam in six years. The publisher says it will be followed by The Sims 4, Unravel Two, and “other major titles” in the next few months. Apex Legends, FIFA 20, and Battlefield V will arrive next year, and those will support cross-play between Steam and Origin.

All of this is leading up to the Steam launch of EA Access, EA’s premium subscription service. EA touts that this is the “first and only” game subscription service to be available on Valve’s storefront. No release date has been announced yet, but EA Access is slated to launch on Steam sometime next spring, and subscriptions will cost the same as on consoles: $5 a month or $30 a year.

The Steam version of EA Access will give subscribers similar perks as on other platforms. Along with access to the Vault–a library of titles that users can play for free–subscribers will be able to take advantage of exclusive discounts and more. “We anticipate that the core benefits of the subscription service as it exists on Origin or Xbox or PlayStation will be the same as those which you would get on Steam,” EA senior VP Mike Blank told GamesIndustry.biz. “And when I say the core benefits, I’m talking about things like early access, the 10% discount, or that catalog of games that you might see on EA Access today on Xbox or on PlayStation 4.”

The arrival of EA Access on Steam seems to open up the chance that the service could launch on other PC storefronts as well, such as the Epic Games Store. It appears EA has no such plans as of now, but Blank hasn’t dismissed the possibility: “What I’ll say today is we are open to new partnerships. While I don’t have anything to announce today, we are always open to new partnerships that make sense for our players. So we’ll see what the future holds.”

Sony Looking To Sell PlayStation Vue

Sony is reportedly considering selling its streaming service, PlayStation Vue. The service was pitched as a low-cost replacement for cable subscriptions, offering bundles of TV networks at various tiered prices.

The Information reports that Sony is looking for a buyer for both the streaming technology and subscriber list, composed of roughly half a million households. The company has reportedly enlisted Merrill Lynch to help facilitate the sale, and has already approached the sports streaming platform FuboTV–though that company declined to purchase.

Sony has a number of hurdles to overcome that could be preventing a sale, however. Its content packages may not align with the interests of potential buyers, so any sale could require the purchaser to renegotiate the lineup. Sony also doesn’t host any original content on its platform.

PlayStation Vue plans start at $50 per month, with an Ultra plan that goes as high as $85 per month with premium channels HBO and Showtime. Despite bearing the PlayStation name, the service isn’t tied only to PlayStation devices.

The move comes as streaming giants like Netflix and Hulu are facing increased competition from upcoming services like Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus.

On the movies side of things, Black Panther, The Lion King (2019), Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and John Wick: Chapter 3 are just a handful of the Blu-rays up for grabs. Hellblade Dev Announces New Project To Help Fight Mental Illness

Ninja Theory’s 2017 game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a harrowing tale that focuses on mental health struggles and overcoming them. The UK studio has now announced its next project–and it continues down that path but in a new and innovative way.

The Insight Project, as it’s called, is a new initiative that Ninja Theory is undertaking with neuroscientist Paul Fletcher, who worked with the game developer on Hellblade. As part of the project, Ninja Theory and Fletcher are designing new therapy methods to help people with mental health struggles by using body sensors and more.

“If you can see what’s happening inside your mind, then you can remove yourself from the symptoms and view it in a new light,” Ninja Theory’s Tameem Antoniades told CNET.

It’s very early days for The Insight Project, but Antoniades explained that his long-term goal is to create a polished, high-end game that can appeal to the mainstream and help people better understand the realities of how mental health affects people. According to the announcement, the company expects it to take shape over the course of several years. The game experiences aim to help people recognize, respond to, and control their anxiety and fear. The company also says it will be subjecting itself to “rigorous scientific principles” of ethics and data-keeping to keep the experiment valid.

Go to CNET to get the full story on The Insight Project and more.

Ninja Theory’s next game is Bleeding Edge, which is a multiplayer combat game. It is believed to be the final game developed by Ninja Theory before Microsoft acquired the company.

Greedfall’s Strong Sales Pushed Focus Interactive To $41.2 Million In Revenue This Quarter

Greedfall has achieved sales beyond what its publisher Focus Home Interactive expected, helping them turn a record profit.

As reported by Gamasutra, Focus Home Interactive has recorded revenue of €37.2 million (about $41.2 million) in its second quarter report for the 2019-2020 financial year, up 135 percent from their revenue in the same quarter last year. €22.5 million of that revenue came from new releases.

The first half of the financial year broke records for the company, as they recorded €79.8 million (about $88.4 million) in revenue for the period, which ended on September 30. 84% of their sales were digital, up from 65% in the first half of the previous financial year, while sales of the company’s back-catalog titles were also up 50%.

During this period Focus Home Interactive has published Greedfall, A Plague Tale: Innocence, The Surge 2 and World War Z, among others. The company will today release Vampyr on Switch.

Greedfall has done well for the company despite a few less-than-glowing reviews, including our own review from Khee Hoon Chan. “Because Greedfall is so cavalier about its colonialist themes,” our reviewer wrote, “and because it plays it safe by sticking so closely to the template of open-world RPGs, it doesn’t really feel revelatory in any way”.

Steam Now Asks If You Want To Revise Your Reviews When You’re Further Into A Game

It looks like Steam is changing how user reviews work, and is now asking long-term players if their opinions have shifted over time.

It’s been a big year for Steam. In the face of increased competition from the Epic Games Store, Steam has started beta testing a visual overhaul for the service, and is looking to improve its curation services by recommending games that customers are less likely to already be familiar with.

Now it seems that Steam is trying to improve user reviews by recommending that players revisit their words once they’re deeper into games. Over on Steam’s Reddit page, user PunnyCasual has posted a screenshot of a Steam notification they received for Destiny 2. It reads: “You’ve played an additional 93 hours. Would you like to revise the review?”

This option will potentially encourage users to change reviews that were based on only the game’s initial hours, or which were critical of the launch state of a game that has since improved. Steam also recently added the option to filter user reviews by playtime, making easier to see the reactions from players who have spent a lot of time with the game you’re looking at.

Hopefully this will lead to an improved slate of user reviews on the service. Right now on Steam, several great horror games are discounted as part of the store’s Halloween sale. You can save on the Resident Evil 2 remake, Soma, Alan Wake, and more.

Death Stranding Launch Trailer Coming Soon, Here’s When

Death Stranding is nearing its release, and now it’s been confirmed that the launch trailer for the much-anticipated PlayStation 4 and PC game is coming very soon soon.

Hideo Kojima announced on Twitter that the launch trailer will be published sometime this week as part of the Paris Games Week event. He also confirmed that he personally edited the trailer. A still from the trailer shows dead whales, while another picture of the editing timeline suggests this may be a lengthy trailer. For comparison, the launch trailer for Kojima’s last game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, was 5 minutes in length.

A tweet from PlayStation France says Kojima will deliver some kind of “surprise” at Paris Games Week. The event runs October 30-November 3 in Paris.

In other news about Death Stranding, a PC version has been announced. It will be published by 505 Games, the Italian company behind games like Control, Payday 2, and the physical version of No Man’s Sky for Xbox One. Fans will have to wait a while, however, as Death Stranding for PC won’t launch until summer 2020.

The Death Stranding review embargo lifts on November 1, so that is when more detailed thoughts on Kojima’s latest game will start to appear online.

The game features a number of celebrity and developer cameos, the latest to be revealed being comedian and talk show host Conan O’Brien. Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski says he passed on the opportunity.

Blacksad: Under the Skin — Watch 25 Minutes Of Gameplay Before Its November 5 Release

Microids has released an extended gameplay video of Blacksad: Under the Skin ahead of its release next week.

The game is a spin-off from Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido’s beloved ongoing French comic, and will cast players as the titular John Blacksad. It’s an adventure game, but it will not feature an inventory or a point-and-click interface. Instead, Blacksad: Under the Skin will give you direct control over the character and focus on observation and conversational choices, as well as your success or failure in quick time events.

The trailer below is an extended gameplay sequence, although it’s not clear whether this is from the final version of the game, due to release digitally on November 5 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One–there’s a distinct lack of sound effects throughout the footage.

John Blacksad will be able to use his heightened senses to hunt down clues in the game, which will be integral to forming conclusions and working through the game’s mysteries.

The story is set between the second and third books in the series, and will see John Blacksad investigating the death of a boxing club owner who died under mysterious circumstances. And, yes, the entire cast is made up of anthropomorphic animals.

In his preview of the game earlier this year, Jordan Ramée said that the game will have a heavy focus on morality, and examining the reasoning behind your own choices.

Pokemon Producer Admits The Series’ Timeline Doesn’t Make Sense

okemon Sword and Shield will invite players into the new Galar region next month. The location is packed with both brand new and returning Pokemon (albeit not all of them). It marks the beginning of the eighth generation of Pokemon games, and some fans might be wondering where these new games fit within the nebulous Pokemon timeline.

It’s never been properly clarified how much overlap there is between the various games in the series. While Gold/Silver are a direct sequel to Red/Blue, the timeline gets more confusing the longer you think about it. But according to the team at Game Freak, you shouldn’t look too deeply into how they all fit together.

In an interview with Game Informer, producer Junichi Masuda admitted that there’s no definite timeline for the Pokemon series, and that it’s best not to get too caught up trying to untangle it. “It starts to get a little complicated if you pay too much attention to timelines,” he said. “Like, there might be a professor that appears and it wouldn’t make sense at all if we applied that kind of timeline logic. So we try not to apply it too rigorously.”

Masuda says that the world of Pokemon has grown, even if a strict linear narrative across the series is hard to land on. “The approach that Pokemon takes is expanding the world, like what the regions are, and making it richer as we go. Rather than a timeline, it’s more of a physical space thing.”

In that same interview, Masuda and director Shigeru Ohmori spoke about the game being of comparable length to past entries in the series. Meanwhile, in our own hands-on report, Kallie Plagge found that picking a starter Pokemon in Sword and Shield is a surprisingly emotional experience.

Pokemon Sword and Shield launch for Nintendo Switch on November 15. Check out our preorder guide to ensure that you get your hands on the version you want on day one.
