Red Dead 2 PC Crashes: How To Possibly Fix The Issue

Red Dead Redemption 2 just launched on PC today, but many players are facing issues of getting it to run properly, or even at all. The game has been subject to crashes, sending players back to desktop–myself included. In my experience, I would either get the “exited unexpectedly” message from the Rockstar Launcher or a critical error message from Windows when either loading into the story mode or a few seconds into gameplay.

However, I was able to get the game running stably after a few tweaks. If you get a crash, the Rockstar Launcher will ask if you want to run the game in Safe Mode; you can do this then tweak your graphics settings back to what you wanted. Granted, you’ll have to restart the game again to apply certain graphics options. One option you’ll want to have set is for the game to use the DirectX 12 renderer–by default, Red Dead 2 runs on the Vulkan API.

A third step isn’t so much a solution as it is just good practice: update your video card’s drivers. Nvidia users should download and install GeForce driver version 441.12 since it’s specifically tuned for RDR2 and the most recent software for Nvidia GPUs. AMD users will want to do the same and install the latest graphics drivers, Radeon software version 19.11.1. Rockstar has acknowledged the situation and offer driver updates as a solution, too. Additionally, it’s suggested to make sure Windows launches the game with “Run this Program as Administrator” and “Disable Fullscreen Optimization” set.

It’s hard to say which one of these are the definitive solution, but if you’re encountering crashes in the same manner, we suggest you follow these steps. Your mileage may vary as every PC is different and it’s not yet clear what exactly is causing the crashes. I’m currently running a PC with the following specs: Intel Core i7-7700K, Nvidia RTX 2080, 16GB RAM, and a 2TB m.2 NVMe SSD. I cannot speak to whether or not there are other issues that might be specific to AMD setups.

For more information on the situation, you can read our story the Red Dead 2 PC crashes people have been encountering. If you’re up and running the game stably, be sure to check out our previous coverage below.

New Mass Effect Javelin Skins Added To Anthem In Celebration Of N7 Day

In celebration of N7 Day–an annual Mass Effect holiday celebrating the beloved RPG franchise every November 7–BioWare has released new javelin skins in Anthem that are themed after characters from the original trilogy of Mass Effect games. A new emote and wrap have been added to the game as well.

Honestly, the four new javelin skins might be the coolest additions ever implemented into Anthem. The Ranger now has a Turian skin that reshapes the javelin to look like Garrus from Mass Effect 3. The new Storm skin is Asari-themed, making the javelin look like Liara in her default Mass Effect 3 appearance. Neither of the other two skins are based on specific characters, with the new Colossus skin themed after a Krogan and the new Interceptor after a Quarian. All four new skins are pictured below.

Each skin goes for 61,000 Coins or 850 Shards, which roughly translates to $8 USD. There’s a new Mass Effect-themed emote in Anthem’s in-game store too: the Shepard Shuffle. Unlocking the emote allows your javelin to perform the awkward dance of the Mass Effect trilogy’s main character, a long-running joke in the franchise. There’s also a new Mass Effect: Andromeda-themed wrap available for purchase to adjust the Mass Effect skins to look like the armor worn by the Turians, Krogans, Turians, and Asari in the Andromeda Initiative.

BioWare typically does or announces something Mass Effect-related every N7 Day, and it’s looking like these new Anthem cosmetics may be what the developer planned for this year. We’ll have to wait for November 7 to see whether there’s anything else. The javelin skins, emote, and wrap will remain in Anthem’s in-game store until November 12.

During N7 Day 2018, BioWare posted a short video on Twitter where studio boss Casey Hudson teased a new Mass Effect game by knowingly staring at the camera after saying, “It means coming into the studio every day, dreaming about what the next great Mass Effect game will be.” In February 2019, Anthem and Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah said that BioWare is “definitely not done with Mass Effect.”

In EA’s latest quarterly earnings call, COO Blake Jorgensen said that the company wants to “deliver some exciting remasters of fan favorites, including the Command and Conquer game we’ve already disclosed.” However, he did not confirm whether those “exciting remasters” might include the Mass Effect trilogy.

Red Dead 2 PC Crashes On Startup, According To Some Players

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out on PC, but startup errors are giving some players trouble. One error in particular, according to Reddit, states, “Red Dead Redemption 2 exited unexpectedly. Please click Retry below to enter the game again, or click Safe Mode to launch the game with reduced graphics settings. If you continue to have problems playing the game, please contact Rockstar Games Customer Service at https://support.rockstargames.com,” followed by options to exit out, retry, and re-launch with safe mode enabled. Some users have even reported issues with the Rockstar Games Launcher.

The Red Dead community on Reddit is currently compiling a list of PC launch issues with some community-sourced troubleshooting tips, including disabling your antivirus. GameSpot has not verified the effectiveness of the methods suggested on Reddit as of yet, and would recommend players also consult the official Rockstar Games support site, especially the page setup for the “exited unexpectedly” error. Rockstar recommends players having issues with Red Dead 2 on PC try running the game as an administrator or updating their graphics drivers.

Other launch issues players have reported on Reddit include audio problems, issues with the Rockstar Games Launcher, and FPS drops. For the FPS drops, the Red Dead community on Reddit suggests switching graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX12 for Nvidia users, but many in the comments warn that this doesn’t work. GameSpot recommends proceeding with caution and waiting for Rockstar’s official support line to address the issue.

PSA: Destiny 2’s Iron Banner Is Back, But Don’t Redeem Pinnacle Rewards Yet

With daylight savings time ending this week in the United States, Bungie’s weekly and daily resets in Destiny 2 will now occur an hour earlier than usual, happening at 9 AM PT. With the November 5 reset, Iron Banner has returned to Crucible, although there’s a key detail to be aware of before cashing in the Pinnacle rewards from it or any other activity.

Bungie is making changes to Pinnacle rewards, which are those that allow you to increase your Power level from 950 to the current cap of 960. This process was meant to be slow but is a true slog due to the way it’s worked since the launch of Shadowkeep. But that’s now changing in a welcome direction.

As detailed during the most recent This Week At Bungie blog, Pinnacle rewards will now drop at +2 Power instead of +1. As a result, you’ll only need these drops in four slots (rather than all of them) to increase your Power level. That should make it less frustrating when you end up with a Pinnacle reward in a slot where you don’t see any Power level increase.

This is the important part: The change won’t go live until this Thursday, November 7. That means that any Pinnacle rewards you might earn between now and then will still drop at +1, including those from completing Iron Banner bounties. As such, to maximize your gains, you should wait until Bungie releases its hotfix on Thursday to earn any of your Pinnacle rewards.

Season 8’s Iron Banner armor

In the meantime, if you didn’t finish it during the first Iron Banner of the season, you can now continue working your way through the Scour the Rust quest. Doing so will entitle you to a full set of the quite nice-looking Season 8 “Iron Will” armor that is available for Hunters, Warlocks, and Titans.

Overwatch 2 Leaks Were “Demoralizing,” Blizzard Says

Blizzard Entertainment has commented on Overwatch 2‘s leak prior to the official BlizzCon 2019 reveal, calling it a “demoralizing” experience for the development team.

Game director Jeff Kaplan spoke to Kotaku Australia about the general feeling that washed over Team 4, Blizzard’s internal team responsible for Overwatch, following the sequel’s leak. “It’s extremely demoralizing,” Kaplan explained. “You feel totally deflated.”

Kaplan said he understands that leaks are bound to happen, but what bothers him and the Overwatch team the most is the lack of context. “When you’re trying so hard to deliver something for somebody and to have it be spoiled in a way that’s not coherent,” Kaplan said. “That’s the part that bothers us the most, where people are not given all the information and all of the context that they need to understand what we’re doing.”

“Our artists are heartbroken: They take such care to make the art look beautiful, and then we get some crappy version of what the art looks like … and then people are like, ‘I don’t know it doesn’t look that good’ and we’re like, no it does, it looks amazing! It’s just a crappy screenshot that someone took, so it can be a bit demoralizing,” Kaplan said. “But my interactions with everybody on the team today is everybody’s on cloud nine.”

Blizzard has discussed the myriad new features coming to Overwatch 2. Along with new Hero redesigns, Overwatch 2 will include new maps, an additional game mode called Push, PvE Story missions, and more. While Overwatch 2 is a full-fledged sequel, not an expansion, progression and skins from the first game will carry over. No official release date or window has been confirmed, but Overwatch 2 will launch on Nintendo Switch, PC (via Battle.net), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Mods Already Making Game Prettier, Goofier With Joker, Undead Nightmare Mods

Red Dead Redemption 2 has finally come to PC, and thanks to some advance work mods are already starting to make the game very different. The selections on Nexus Mods so far range from ghastly horses to new guns to movie references and more.

The Red Dead Modders group has uploaded several already. Some highlights include character models that make Arthur Morgan look like the Joker or a Terminator, horse and Arthur mods modeled after the classic RDR expansion Undead Nightmare, and a “photorealistic reshade” option for even prettier visual fidelity.

If you’re jumping into the old west for the first time now that RDR 2 is on PC, be sure to check out some essential tips and how to earn money. Plus you may want to refresh yourself on the story from the first Red Dead before you get started.

For the time being, Red Dead Redemption 2 is available through a variety of digital storefronts including Rockstar’s own game launcher, but not Steam. That version will follow in December. It’s also planned as a launch title on Google Stadia, which will be out later this month. GameSpot’s review for the console version last year awarded it a 9/10, praising its storytelling and world-building.

This Acclaimed RPG Is Free On iPhone And iPad For A Limited Time

With Apple Arcade delivering a steady stream of high-quality mobile games, there’s really never been a better time to game on iOS devices. You should take a break from filling up your iPhone’s storage space with Apple Arcade games to download Bastion, as Supergiant Games’ 2011 debut is currently free for a limited time.

The original iOS version published by Warner Bros. was delisted last week. An updated version published by Supergiant just popped up on the App Store, and the studio responsible for the whimsical action-RPG is graciously giving it away free of charge until the end of the year.

No Caption Provided

We tried searching for Bastion in the App Store, but it seems the new listing isn’t appearing in to search results just yet. After downloading, you need to unlock the full game. Bastion boots directly to the beginning of the game rather than a menu screen. After playing for about ten seconds, the settings wheel will appear in the upper right-hand corner. Click on the wrench/hammer icon, and you’ll see a button that reads “Unlock $0.00.” Bastion is now in your iOS game library forever!

In Bastion, you play as the Kid, a young adventurer on a fantastical journey narrated by an old man named Rucks. Throughout the story, you fight your way through enemy-infested levels comprised of floating environments that continuously appear as you walk. The end goal is to collect the cores that made the city of Caelondia tick before the world-altering event known as the Calamity. Earning an impressive 8.5/10 in GameSpot’s Bastion review, the game became a runaway hit.

Supergiant Games went on to create three more compelling indies: Transistor, Pyre, and Hades, which is currently in early access.
