Important Out-Of-Print 80s Video Game Book Is Being Resurrected On Kickstarter

Video game book publisher Boss Fight Books is currently hosting a small Kickstarter campaign to resurrect an out-of-print book about the 1976 Atari arcade game Breakout. The book, Pilgrim in the Microworld, has long been considered an important, formative text in games criticism and scholarship, and it is well regarded by critics and scholars. But it has not been available to purchase, outside of the second-hand market, for a long time–until now.

Pilgrim in the Microworld was written by David Sudnow, who worked as a pianist and piano teacher throughout his life, eventually passing away in 2007. The book will be re-released as part of the Boss Fight Games imprint, and will be the 22nd book in the series. At the time it was written, the idea of a game like Breakout being taken seriously enough for longform criticism was unusual. As the Kickstarter page describes it, “the book’s modern readers remain fascinated by an obsessive, brilliant, and often hilarious quest to learn to play Breakout just as one would learn the piano.” He is also the author of Ways of the Hand: The Organization of Improvised Conduct.

The Kickstarter campaign asked for $1000, and has already been successful–as of right now it has made $3928 with 15 days to go. You can nab a digital copy of the book for a $5 pledge, and physical copies can be purchased for $15 (plus shipping–$5 within the USA, $15 for the rest of the world).

Stretch goals have been announced, and since the campaign has hit $2500, every backer who gives $15 or more will also get a digital copy of ‘Nintendo 64 Video Games You Will Never Play’. If it hits $5000, backers will also get a digital copy of ‘Continue? The Boss Fight Books Anthology’, and at $7500, digital copies of ‘PlayStation Video Games You Will Never Play’ will be included.

The book will contain a new foreword from series editor Gabe Durham, and a fresh copy edit. Digital copies will be made available in December 2019, while physical copies will be sent out in January 2020. All work on the book has already been completed, and the Kickstarter is just to cover final printing and production costs.

Nintendo Switch Lite Price Slashed To $169 In Black Friday Sale

Nintendo Switch Lite deals have been conspicuously absent from Black Friday sales so far this year. Aside from a quickly sold-out deal at Google Shopping, which had the console for $175 earlier today, we’ve seen no other straight-up discounts on Nintendo’s smaller, handheld-only iteration of the Switch. But if you’ve been holding out to see if the Switch Lite will drop on Black Friday, you’re in luck, as we’ve just spotted the handheld at its lowest price yet.

Using promo code THANKS20, which slashes 20% off the price, you can currently get the Switch Lite for just $169 (plus any sales tax) at digital marketplace Rakuten via seller SNG Trading. All three colors–yellow, gray, and turquoise–are available for the discount. Just add the Switch Lite to your cart and apply the promo code at checkout.

The Best Black Friday 2019 Deals On Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Xbox One Bundles

Star Wars fans are having a good year. There is the ongoing series, The Mandalorian on Disney Plus, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker releasing in December. The past month also brought Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, a new action game from Titanfall and Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment. Given how recently it came out–it hit PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 15–Black Friday deals aren’t exactly abundant unless you’re looking to purchase a console bundle. That said, we may see more discounts on Black Friday and Cyber Monday themselves, so if a bundle isn’t tempting and you’re strapped for cash, it might be best to hold off for now. We’ve seen unadvertised deals on recent games pop up in past years.

Luckily, at least for the time being, a deal has popped up on the PC version–Jedi Fallen Order can be had for $50 over at Amazon right now. The console versions remain full price at the time of this writing. We’ll report back if any other deals emerge on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is one of our top 2019 holiday gift recommendations; it also earned an 8/10 in our Jedi Fallen Order review. “Fallen Order becomes perhaps the strongest conception of what playing as a Jedi Knight ought to really be like,” wrote Phil Hornshaw. “It’s true that Fallen Order borrows liberally from other action games, but those elements work together with Respawn’s combat and environment design, and a story that finds humanity in the Force and in its characters, to hone in on what makes the world of Star Wars worthy of revisiting again and again. Even with some rough edges, Fallen Order represents one of the most compelling game additions to the Star Wars franchise in years.”

Read on for the best Black Friday deals on Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order announced so far.

Black Friday deals: Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

So far, the best deal on Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order for PS4 or Xbox One was available around launch over at Ebay, where you could get a brand-new copy of the game with free shipping for $50 ($10 off). Unfortunately, that deal is sold out.

Starting this Sunday, November 24, Target will include a free Second Sister Inquisitor Funko Pop figure (which normally goes for $9) with any order of Jedi Fallen Order, and that includes any of the console bundles that come with the game (which you can find below, by the way). The deal ends on November 27.

GameStop has a similar deal going on right now, but theirs includes a $15 Fandango credit instead, which you can use to go see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when it hits theaters December 20.

Project Cars Dev Sold To Codemasters, Working On “Hollywood Blockbuster Title”

Project Cars developer Slightly Mad Studios has been brought into the Codemasters fold following a buyout, adding to a portfolio of racing franchises that includes Dirt, Grid, and the F1 series. The studio maintains the rights to their Project Cars series, which means that future entries will be published under Codemasters. According to the announcement, Codemasters will publish not only the Project Cars series, but also an “unannounced Hollywood blockbuster title.” The specifics of this game were not announced, but as Eurogamer reported, it’s been rumored that Slightly Mad Studios is working on a Fast & Furious game since 2017. Gamesindustry.biz reports that this was a $30 million deal.

In a statement alongside this announcement, Codemasters CEO Frank Sagnier said that they are “delighted to bring such an incredible racing game developer to the Codemasters family, and this unequivocally establishes us as a global powerhouse in the development of racing titles.” The publisher is looking to the future, with the growth of streaming platforms like Google Stadia and the impending release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett in 2020. “This is the perfect time for Codemasters to take its next step.” The studio is also working on Project Cars Go, a mobile spin-off title.

Slightly Mad Studios previously worked with EA on two Need for Speed titles, Need for Speed: Shift and Shift 2: Unleashed (which curiously dropped the Need for Speed branding from its name), before moving on to the Project Cars brand. Not mentioned in the announcement is the Mad Box, the console that the studio was reportedly working on. Earlier this year we saw multiple potential designs for it, and CEO Ian Bell promised free games for life to whoever could come up with the best slogan for the console.

The most recent game in the Project Cars series, Project Cars 2, released in 2017. GameSpot gave it a 7/10 in our review, and reviewer Richard Wakeling said that it was a much stronger game if played with a wheel. “It’s ambitious in scope and depth, and the sheer breadth of available motorsports almost guarantees there’s something for everyone to sink their teeth into. It’s a shame, then, that there’s always this nagging feeling in the back of your mind that a bug or moment of AI madness will disrupt the whole thing–and more often than not, it will.”

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Adds First Raid, Described As The “Toughest” Challenge

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint has received a big new update, and its main new feature is the franchise’s first-ever raid. Called Project Titan, the raid is free for everyone on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s also coming to the Stadia version of Breakpoint, but not until an unspecified point later in the year.

Project Titan is a four-player raid that challenges players to work together to take on what Ubisoft is calling Breakpoint’s “toughest end-game challenge.” Specifically, players will be battling against a series of enemies, including the “most advanced” drones called The Titans.

The raid is set on the island of Golem, which is a brand-new area outside of the main Auroa location. The terrain is treacherous, featuring sulfur in the air and ash everywhere from the nearby active volcano. Players will also face off against the Red Wolves, an enemy faction that has taken control of the island and is using it to test prototype killing drones.

Players will need to take down four bosses–Baal, Quantum Computer, Gargoyle, and Cerberus–to complete the raid. Each boss has their own special set of skills, so players will need to tactically coordinate.

The Project Titan raid requires four players, each of whom must have a gear level of 150 or more. Those who successfully complete the raid will be rewarded with “some of the best loot and gear in the game.” You can get a glimpse at the Project Titan raid in the video above.

Project Titan will reset each week with new objectives and enemy locations, and rewards to earn. At the start, only Normal difficulty will be available, but Easy and Heroic options will be added in early 2020. Head to the Ghost Recon website to see a full rundown of the Project Titan raid.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint is among the Ubisoft titles that are discounted on the Ubisoft Store for Black Friday. Check out GameSpot’s Black Friday roundup here to get all the details.

Fortnite: Play A Full Game Made Entirely Within Creative Mode

Fortnite is best known for its battle royale mode, which recently rebranded as Fortnite: Chapter 2. But there are other modes within the game, including the Save the World PvE mode the game launched with and a “Creative” mode for people who want to build things without being killed. Now, a team of Creative users have become the first to use this mode to make a full single-player game.

The game, The Fourth Dimension, was created by YouTuber Mustard Plays (who is, Kotaku points out, the brother of Fortnite’s creative director Donald Mustard), along with the four person team TeamCre8. The announcement video below shows off the map, the code for which is 1500-2565-8566. Mustard Plays promises that the game is can be a 6-10 hour experience for players.

The game is set on May 12, 3254, after the icecaps melted. There’s a full plot about a refractory network that was built to save the planet, but it also seems that people have mostly disappeared from the world. Based on the trailer, it looks like the game is about exploring the six worlds the team built, solving puzzles, platforming, and some light shooting. Clues that you’ll need to finish the game are hidden within the announcement video, too. Alternatively, Mustard Plays has created a full walkthrough video for anyone who gets stuck.

Fortnite continues to go strong, and just brought back daily challenges and patch notes in its latest update, patch 11.20.

Madden 20 Has A New Fastest-Ever QB, And The Gameplay Videos Are Impressive

Madden NFL 20 has a new quarterback speed champion. Due to his solid on-field performance this year, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens has seen his speed rating increased to 96, which is the highest-ever for a quarterback in the popular professional football series. The previous record-holder was Michael Vick, who had a speed rating of 94.

In a statement on Instagram, Vick congratulated Jackson on beating his ratings record. He said: “Lamar’s the modern day new era quarterback and well deserving of it. Changing of the guard; it’s all good, man. All records are made to be broken. The next generation are supposed to be better than us. Gotta give credit where credit is due.”

Responding to his new speed rating, Jackson said at a press conference that it’s still too low.

Players have taken to Twitter and other sources to showcase Jackson’s new speed in Madden 20, and it looks dramatic. He also has a 94 acceleration rating and 95 agility rating, which makes him very elusive. You can see one of these videos down below.

Vick was regarded as one of the best, most dynamic, and slippery quarterbacks in Madden 2004 with his 94 speed rating. Some considered him to be overpowered, and it’s likely people will say the same about Jackson with his new high speed rating. Earlier Madden titles locked their playing ratings on disc, but these days they are updated regularly based on how players perform on the field.

Jackson has 24 touchdowns and 2,427 yards of passing this year leading the Ravens to a 9-2 record that is currently good for first place in the AFC North.

Madden NFL 20 is among the numerous games that are marked down for Black Friday 2019. Check out GameSpot’s Black Friday breakdown to see all the best deals.

Microsoft also recently announced that the Xbox All Access program is back for another holiday season. Anyone who doesn’t want to pay the full price for a console upfront can instead opt for a monthly payment plan. The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition goes for $20/month, the Xbox One S for $23/month, and the powerful Xbox One X for $31/month. Each option runs for 24 months and comes with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for the full duration of the plan.

The best part of this round of All Access is that you’ll have the option to upgrade to Project Scarlett, the new Xbox console that is scheduled to arrive next holiday. Xbox One X All Access members will be eligible to upgrade after 12 months, but Xbox One S members will have to wait 18 months. All-Digital Edition members will also have to pay a $20 upgrade fee.

All upgrades must go through the retailer you purchased your original 24-month plan from, and you’ll have to re-up to a new 24-month plan (with new terms and pricing). In the US, Amazon is currently the only retailer offering All Access–in the UK, customers can subscribe starting November 5 at Smyths and GAME.
