Persona 5 Royal Pre-Orders Available: Launch Edition, Special Editions, Steelbook, And More

The official western release date for Persona 5 Royal was just announced, previously teased through a Twitter countdown from Atlus and unveiled through a new trailer. P5R is a reimagining of the original RPG that adds a plethora of new features and mechanics as well as a reworked storyline with all-new characters and cutscenes. Persona 5 Royal Western Release Date Announced In New Trailer

After developer Atlus drummed up hype for an announcement though a countdown on Twitter, it has officially revealed Persona 5 Royal‘s release date for North America and Europe. While the game has been out in Japan since October 31 this year, the localized version of Persona 5 Royal will launch in the West on March 31, 2020 exclusively for PlayStation 4.

A trailer also accompanied the announcement, which showed off some of the game’s new features and additions. For those unaware, P5R is a revamped version of the original Persona 5, but it’s more than just a re-release with extra content. It incorporates a new core character named Kasumi Yoshizawa who joins the Phantom Thieves and plays a major role in the mysteries and events that unfold throughout the story, in turn recontextualizing the original narrative.

On top of that, P5R brings about new activities and places to visit, and it introduces several changes and additions to the combat system and Palace exploration. You’ll get new social scenes, dialogue, perspectives, and story events as well as an extra semester that is sure to change late-game scenarios–there will also be a new palace and alternate endings. And if you want more of Persona 5’s banging jazz-fusion soundtrack, you’ll be happy to know that P5R includes 20 new songs.

Persona 5 Royal is open to pre-orders with several editions that have different bonuses packed in. The Phantom Thieves edition ($90 USD) gets you the official Joker mask with a stand, a collector’s box, the P5R artbook, the soundtrack, a limited steelbook case, and a code for a dynamic PS4 theme. The Launch edition ($60) comes with the steelbook case and the PS4 theme code. The Ultimate edition ($100) is digital-only and gets you the game along with all DLC bundles and six extra costume packs, while the Deluxe edition ($70) comes with a Kasumi costume bundle (which is a $15 DLC pack). All of Persona 5’s original DLC will also be included in P5R for free.

We’ve covered P5R leading up to its release in Japan, and you can get a deeper look at the game with our Persona 5 Royal reveal trailer breakdown or our analysis on a number of the new features in the game.

Resident Evil 3 Remake, RE Resistance Art Leak

Following on the success of the Resident Evil 2 Remake on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, fans have expected that the classic Resident Evil 3 was bound to get a similar treatment. That appears to be the case, as cover art for the game has appeared on the PlayStation Network.

The three pieces of cover art show the game as Biohazard 3 (the Japanese name for Resident Evil), Resident Evil 3, and a Biohazard “Z Version.” Each prominently features Nemesis, the unstoppable monster who plays a central role in RE3. This suggests Capcom is preparing to announce the remake, possibly opening preorders through PSN at the same time.

Another cover art leak that appeared alongside RE3 was for “Resident Evil Resistance,” which appears to be the finalized name for Project Resistance. That co-op survival game pits a band of survivors against a “Mastermind” who controls the output of monsters to defeat them. It hosted a closed beta last month.

“Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it’s also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series’ finest entries,” Alessandro Fillari wrote in GameSpot’s review. “But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story’s conclusion. Though Resident Evil 2 has its roots firmly in the past, it reworks the familiar horrors into something that feels brand new and all its own.”

The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel 3 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch

Nihon Falcom’s JRPG series The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel has found a passionate audience in both Japan and western markets. Focusing on a band of military school cadets, the squad faces off against ever-growing threats across a wartorn land, while slowly building up their skills in combat and forming greater bonds of friendship. While Trails of Cold Steel 3 dropped for PlayStation 4 in the west last October, NIS America has revealed to GameSpot that the series will be making its debut on the Nintendo Switch next year.

Coming sometime in Spring 2020, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 will launch on the Nintendo Switch in the U.S. and Europe ahead of the Japan release–which is something of a first for the franchise. Earlier this year, Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo stated that he hoped to get more games on the Nintendo’s portable console following the Switch release of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. Published by NIS America, a Switch demo for Trails of Cold Steel 3 will also be available shortly around the time of the game’s launch.

We recently spent some time with the Switch port and saw how the third game had made the transition to the new platform. In comparison to its PlayStation 4 counterpart; The Switch version runs at a locked 720p resolution and 30 frames-per-second in both docked and undocked modes. Just like the PS4 release, the Switch version of Trails of Cold Steel 3 will also launch with special editions of the game. With the Extracurricular Edition, you’ll get the base game, a 20-page art book, and a reversible cover. Whereas with the Thors Academy Edition, it comes with everything in the previous collection, along with a box set including a steelbook, game soundtrack, postcards, and a Mishy plushie. All versions of the game, including the standard release, will also have all Trails of Cold Steel 3 DLC items packed in as well.

Though the west just got the third entry in the series, the final entry–Trails of Cold Steel 4–has been out in Japan for over a year. As of this time, the developers at Falcom are already looking ahead with the Legends of Heroes franchise, teasing a new storyline focusing on another group of characters. Just before the western PS4 release of Trails of Cold Steel 3, GameSpot spoke with Kondo about the JRPG series, and why it takes so long to release the games in the west.

“As creators, we would love for everybody to be able to play the game as soon as possible but the reality is, because these [games] are so story focused, we’re actually still fiddling with the text up until the very end, and we won’t let localization partners work on it until it’s complete,” said Kondo. “These games are known for their very luminous stories, and it takes a long time to translate. This one, for example, has 2.4 million Japanese characters, and it just takes time.”

Starship Troopers – Terran Command, An RTS Due In 2020, Announced–Here’s The First Trailer

A new Starship Troopers game is on the way, and it’s an RTS that will pit your human army against the bug-like aliens that franchise fans are so familiar with. A first look gameplay trailer for Starship Troopers – Terran Command has been released, with the game due at some point in 2020. It shows off a short snippet of alpha gameplay, as the human forces are overrun by Arachnid.

There’s also an announcement trailer to enjoy, which captures the pulpy feel of the game. It comes from the creators of the Order of Battle series, and has only been announced for PC.

The game is set in the universe of the Starship Troopers films, which started with Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 satirical sci-fi action movie that spawned multiple sequels. In the game, you’ll fight over different planetary campaigns, and the story and missions you take on will change depending on your choices. Since the Arachnid enemies greatly outnumber you, you’ll need to account for this in your tactics, and use the numerous different units and abilities at your disposal to fight them.

The game is available to wishlist on Steam, where some additional key features are listed:

  • Dynamically generated campaigns for virtually limitless replayability.
  • Dozens of unique unit types, each with their own special abilities.
  • Terrain elevation, True Line of Sight & True Line of Fire provide deep tactical gameplay.
  • An extensive technology tree to develop and customize your forces.
  • Persistent leaders can be attached to units and upgraded throughout the campaign.
  • Heroics, explosions, gore, and Bugs. Lots of Bugs.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare — See Footage Of The New Crash Map

One of the most iconic maps from 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Crash, is being remade for the new Modern Warfare. Crash is coming to the new game in the Season One update on December 3, and now new gameplay footage from it has emerged online.

YouTuber Attach posted a video of the new map–and it looks pretty much exactly like it did back in 2007 except with better-looking graphics and one relatively small change to the map itself. There is a new back alley section of the map, but that appears to be the only notable addition.

Curiously, Attach said he was informed by Infinity Ward developers that he wasn’t allowed to use the attack chopper killstreak because it could cause the map to glitch. Here’s to hoping that has been sorted out for the public release this week.

Crash is just one of the maps coming to Modern Warfare in the Season One update. Some of the others include Vacant and Shipment, which were also fan-favorites in the original game. The Season One update also includes new modes, weapon blueprints, and more.

In addition to the Season One update, December 3 marks the start of Modern Warfare’s first Battle Pass. Just like with Fortnite, players will progress through tiers–of which there are 100–earning new cosmetic items and more on the way. Check out a breakdown of the Modern Warfare Battle Pass to learn more.

Reggie Fils-Aime Was Inspired By Satoru Iwata To Ensure His Legacy At Nintendo

Reggie Fils-Aime retired as the president of Nintendo America earlier this year, and was replaced in the role by Doug Bowser. Fils-Aime has been busy since, starting his own Twitter account and taking up the position of Leader in Residence at Cornell Dyson. Now, in a new interview with GameDaily.biz, Fils-Aime has opened up further about his retirement, and how the passing of a dear friend and coworker led to him thinking about what it would mean to step away from Nintendo.

In the article, Fils-Aime reflects on his friendship with former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who tragically passed away in 2015. He says that he began thinking about retirement not long after Iwata passed: not out of sadness, but because Iwata’s legacy had him thinking about his own. “It just reinforces how fleeting our existence is,” he says. “It also reinforced for me the legacy that he had built, and he had created for the company…I would say that event certainly crystallized for me the importance and motivated me to be clear and intentional in what I wanted to do. “

Fils-Aime stepped away from the company as it is doing well, with Switch sales going strong and Nintendo games reviewing well. Fils-Aime says that it was important to go out on top, so as to ensure that the company was in a good position for whoever took over, and his legacy would be a good one. “The business needed to be healthy and set for positive performance and the organization needed to be ready, and those two came together earlier this year.”

Speaking further on the professional relationship he had with Iwata, Fils-Aime provides an emotional account of how close the two men were. “We would talk all the time. He was gracious in sharing his perspective. He was tremendously accommodating in hearing a unique point of view from me, a person who had no history in the video game business other than as a player. But [he valued] my perspective because I brought a consumer sensibility. I brought a Western business sensibility. And the relationship that he and I had for almost 11 years, it was truly special and just, his openness with me and the things that we were able to do truly together, were just magical.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Fils-Aime said that, despite receiving some offers, he has no interest in running another company. Citing a “10 plus billion dollar business” that invited him to come and run a part of it, he says that he’d rather not. “It’s firmly reinforced for me that I want to be in the advisory and consulting role versus running another business. If I wanted to continue running a business, I would have done that.”
