The Goose From Untitled Goose Game Terrorizes The Game Awards

During The Game Awards 2019, a Muppets-themed segment announcing the Games For Impact winner also featured a special appearance by everyone’s favorite goose. The goose from the smash-hit Untitled Goose Game was onstage as a puppet, complete with plenty of honking and on-brand Muppets-style comedy.

The segment included a clip called The Untitled Beaker Game, which is what it sounds like: Muppets in the Goose Game universe. It was a bit of a bizarre segment, however, in that it was mainly to announce the winner of the Games for Impact award, which was Gris.

There have been plenty of real games announced during this year’s Game Awards, too, including a sequel to the acclaimed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 was shown on the Xbox Series X, which was also announced during The Game Awards. Check out our exclusive interview and first look for more details.

Ruined King Is A Story-Based League Of Legends Game

During The Game Awards, comic artist-turned-game developer Joe Madureira announced that his game studio Airship Syndicate is working with Riot Games to develop the first single-player campaign for the popular MOBA League of Legends. Titled Ruined King, the single-player story will focus on a set of League champions facing off against monsters and other bosses in turn-based combat.

The storyline for the Ruined King takes place after the Burning Tides event, which introduced a whole suite of changes to LoL. Currently, the game is in development for consoles and PC. According to Madureira at the show, the game will feature a “new take on turn-based combat that’s really cool.”

Earlier this year, Riot Games revealed an ambitious expansion to the League of Legends franchise. In addition to this new single-player game, League of Legends will also have a brand new fighting game with the set of League champions. Known as Project L, this fighting game spin-off is developed by Radiant Entertainment, which was created by the co-founder of the EVO fighting game tournament.

The Forest Sequel Sons Of The Forest Announced At The Game Awards

Frightening survival game The Forest is getting a sequel, and it looks altogether weirder and more disturbing than its predecessor. The game was announced with a new trailer at The Game Awards that showed strange creatures awaiting you when you’re trapped in the woods once again.

The trailer, playing from a first-person perspective, started with a group of soldiers on a helicopter, with the player character revealing a wrist tattoo that read, “Fight demons.” That ominous start led to a helicopter crash, stranding the soldiers in the ominous titular forest. You can check out the trailer here.

As in the first game, it seems you’ll encounter some frightening semi-human creatures, including a blind cave dweller. But the other inhabitants of the woods seem to be a little more complex and spooky than in the first game; the trailer also showed a woman-like creature dancing through the woods, with altogether too many legs.

In the end, the trailer left more questions than answers, with no release date or platforms listed when it concluded. But like the first game, the trailer suggested cooperative gameplay and surviving with whatever you can find on-hand.

The Game Awards has promised a ton of new game reveals in addition to the awards. We’ll be keeping track of the big ones, including the winners, so stay tuned.

Apex Legends Is Getting A Mirage-Themed, Christmas Event Called Holo-Day Bash

During The Game Awards 2019, Respawn announced its next seasonal event for Apex Legends. Called Holo-Day Bash, the limited-time event is winter holiday-themed and focuses on the holographic trickster, Mirage.

The Holo-Day Bash adds several new winter and Christmas-themed skins and voice lines. With their new skins, Mirage transforms into a nutcracker, Octane becomes a wide-eyed reindeer, sadistic Caustic adopts the jolly demeanor of Santa Claus, Crypto appropriates the look of Jack Frost, both Pathfinder and Wattson throw on Christmas-themed attire, Bangalore dresses up as a demonic snowman, and Gibraltar is a polarbear. Sadly, Wraith and Lifeline are left out in the cold.

Like previous events, Holo-Day Bash adds a new limited-time mode as well. Called Winter Express, the new mode is a king-of-the-hill take on the battle royale, with World’s Edge moving train the point on the map that teams need to hold in order to score points. Score enough points and you win the round. Win three rounds and your team is crowned champion squad. Similar to Fight or Fright’s Shadowfall, you can respawn multiple times in Winter Express. It seems like Kings Canyon’s dropship makes an appearance too alongside the train, offering another way for you to secure high-tier loot.

The train itself is tied to the Holo-Day Bash’s town takeover. Back in Kings Canyon, Octane and Wraith had town takeovers in the Iron Crown and Voidwalker events, respectively, which transformed portions of the map to reflect the characters’ personalities and backstory. For the Holo-Day Bash, Mirage’s town takeover transforms the train into his train. He’ll be the conductor, and some of his announcements as the train moves around World’s Edge will reveal backstory on the holographic trickster.

New Dungeons & Dragons Game, Dark Alliance, Debuts At The Game Awards

A new Dungeons & Dragons game, Dark Alliance, has been unveiled during the 2019 Game Awards. It’s a third-person hack-and-slash action RPG, and it’s coming to PC and unspecified consoles in the second half of 2020. The game is being developed by Tuque Games, a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast that previously developed top-down shooter Livelock.

Dark Alliance will feature several monsters and characters familiar to Dungeons & Dragons fans, including Drizzt Do’Urden and his companions Catti-Brie, Bruenor, and Wulfgar, characters first created by fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore. Drizzt previously appeared in Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, and this game will function as a spiritual successor to it and its sequel. A first-look trailer was seen during The Game Awards–you can watch it below.

In a statement sent out alongside the announcement, Jeff Hattem, vice president of digital development at Tuque Games, said that his team have been wanting to make this game for a while. “From the moment I founded Tuque, our team has known that we wanted to bring our passion for D&D and creativity to the Dark Alliance series,” he says.

“We’re taking players on an epic journey through the harsh and violent Icewind Dale, where they’re going to need to use their wits, their weapons and their party members to help them survive the iconic monsters we’re going to send their way.”

Dark Alliance will feature dungeon crawling and plenty of looting, as well as an RPG-style progression system. It will feature both couch and online co-op for four players, and more details will be made available on the game’s official site.

Fortnite Announces Star Wars Crossover Gear At The Game Awards

Fortnite players will have their first chance to watch a scene from the upcoming Star Wars film, The Rise of Skywalker, this weekend, and those who attend the special preview will take home a reward. During The Game Awards, developer Epic revealed that all players who attend this weekend’s in-game Star Wars screening will receive a Tie Whisper Glider for free.

The Star Wars preview takes place this Saturday, December 14, at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET from the in-game location Risky Reels. You’ll need to log into the game before then in order to watch the clip and receive the Tie Whisper Glider. Epic says Risky Reels opens its doors at 10:30 AM PT / 1:30 PM ET, so players can head in early to get a good seat. Ahead of the screening, new Star Wars skins, emotes, and other cosmetics have been added to the game.

Prior to The Game Awards, Epic had been teasing that it had a “special announcement” related to Fortnite at the show. there was speculation that the announcement could be an annual pass, after data referring to one was discovered in the game following the recent v11.30 update. Epic responded to the leak by saying it has “no plans” to offer such a pass, although it did apparently consider one.

“We’ve seen discussions around a 2020 Annual Pass as a result of data mining the v11.30 build. Occasionally prototype features make it into our build that end up not being released,” Epic told Eurogamer. “While the 2020 Annual Pass was considered, we have no plans to release it… unlike the Bao Bros [skin].”

Fortnite is currently in the midst of its first season of Chapter 2. The season was originally slated to end this month, but Epic recently announced it is extending the season into February. That means there are still a few weeks left to finish up any outstanding challenges you may have from this season. You can find maps and guides to help you complete all the trickier tasks in our Fortnite Chapter 2 challenges roundup.

The Game Awards brought a ton of other exciting announcements and reveals. You can catch up on all the biggest news from this year’s awards show below.

Xbox Series X: Everything We Just Learned About Microsoft’s Next-Gen Console

Microsoft’s next-gen gaming console, formerly known as Project Scarlett, has been revealed as the Xbox Series X. The official announcement came out of The Game Awards 2019, but here at GameSpot, we have the exclusive scoop on many more details about the upcoming console. We spoke with Xbox boss Phil Spencer and partner director of program management Jason Ronald to get insight on just how powerful it’ll be, the idea behind the name and design, how it’ll fit into the wider Xbox ecosystem, and so much more.

We’ve compiled all our stories into this hub to summarize everything we know about the Xbox Series X. We’ll have even more coverage soon, so be sure to check back for more information. You can catch even more in our exclusive interview and feature article on the Xbox Series X.

Why The Name Xbox Series X And Vertical Design

You probably have questions about the name itself: Xbox Series X. It’s not the flashiest or boldest name, but it’s indicative of where Microsoft is going with its Xbox ecosystem. Phil Spencer explained the naming convention and philosophy in more detail.

You may also be wondering why the Xbox Series X deviates quite a bit from the Xbox One in terms of physical design. To be clear, it can be laid down horizontally and function properly even though it’s presented as a PC tower-style design.

The Xbox Series X and the new controller.

What We Know About Performance And Specs

Considering how powerful the Xbox One X was (and still is), the Series X would have to go the extra mile to truly set itself apart. And by all accounts, the new console sounds like it’ll be powerful enough to do that. According to Spencer, the GPU will be eight times faster than the base Xbox One and twice as fast as the Xbox One X. The CPU is said to be about four times more capable than previous consoles; however, it’s unclear which model that comparison is being made with.

We also have a few details about the cooling system that’ll keep these powerful components running. The Series X will operate on a single fan with additional heatsinks, and Spencer touts that it’ll be as quiet as the Xbox One X.

But What Will Games Actually Look Like?

Alongside the Series X reveal was the first look at a brand-new game from Ninja Theory. It’s a sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice called Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, and it’ll be the first game from the studio since the Xbox Game Studios acquisition.

Judging from the teaser we saw, we’re convinced that Series X will make the generational jump quite clear from a graphical standpoint. Halo: Infinite is still set to be a launch title, though we still haven’t seen the game running explicitly on the Series X.

Our first look at Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, an Xbox Series X exclusive.

The New Controller

The Xbox One controller is arguably one of the best gamepads available. However, the Series X controller will feature some slight changes and additions. It’s a bit smaller overall and slightly reshaped (though not by much). It’ll feature a share button and a modular hybrid d-pad, and will still have like rumble triggers and haptic feedback. Additionally, the Series X controller can be used on the Xbox One, and Xbox One controllers can be used on the Series X.

How Cloud Gaming Fits In

Phil Spencer has made it very clear the Project xCloud isn’t here to replace local hardware and consoles. Rather, xCloud is built to be complementary to the Xbox ecosystem. The focus has been to make Xbox games accessible across different devices, and Microsoft has given its developer access to the multiple platforms to make sure all games run properly.

Pre-Orders And Release Date

Even if you’re already sold on the Xbox Series X, you’ll still have to wait to pre-order. Phil Spencer said that Microsoft would rather wait for folks to see all of what they’d be getting into before making a decision. Though we didn’t get any new information on a specific release date, this is your reminder that the Xbox Series X will launch in Holiday 2020.
