How Long Is Half-Life: Alyx?

There are plenty of questions surrounding Half-Life: Alyx. Where in the Half-Life universe does it take place? What platforms will it be on? While answers to such questions continue to pop up, we’ve learned another detail about Valve’s latest Half-Life entry: it’s “about the same length as Half-Life 2.”

Robin Walker, one of Alyx’s programmers, sat down with IGN to talk about the new game. In the interview, Walker revealed an approximation of Alyx’s length. “It’s a full-scale campaign,” Walker said. “Repeated playtest results indicate it’s about the same length as Half-Life 2.”

But just how long is that? According to HowLongToBeat, Half-Life 2 takes 13 hours to finish the main campaign. You can add another six and a half hours if you’re a completionist. For comparison, the original Half-Life takes 12 hours to complete, or 15 hours if you want to experience everything the game has.

The Game Awards show host Geoff Keighley said that he has “seen [Alyx] in multiple stages of development” and his playthrough took him “over 15 hours” to go through the “full-blown Half-Life experience.”

Half-Life: Alyx was revealed earlier today with a gameplay announcement trailer, which can be viewed above. Though a release date has yet to be confirmed, the SteamVR-compatible title has a sweet little discount as part of a pre-purchase promotion. In the interim, we’ve compiled a list of everything we know about the game.

Half-Life: Alyx Details: A “Full-Length” Game Set Before Half-Life 2

As promised, Valve has divulged further details on Half-Life: Alyx, a new VR entry in its beloved Half-Life franchise. Set for launch on Steam in March 2020, the game will be playable on “all PC-based VR headsets” and is set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

“Alyx Vance and her father Eli secretly mount the resistance to the brutal occupation of Earth by a mysterious alien race known as The Combine,” reads Valve’s official description. “As Alyx, players take the fight to the Combine to save the future of humanity.” You can check out the first screenshots of Half-Life: Alyx below, along with the first trailer, which showcases some gameplay and numerous signature elements of Half-Life, including headcrabs and the G-Man.

Half-Life: Alyx is described as a “full-length” experience that has been designed from the ground up for VR headsets. It features “all of the hallmarks of a classic Half-Life game: world exploration, puzzle-solving, visceral combat, and an intricately woven story that connects it all with the characters iconic to the Half-Life universe.”

In a statement, Valve founder Gabe Newell said, “Everyone at Valve is excited to be returning to the world of Half-Life. VR has energized us. We’ve invested a lot of ourselves in the technology. But we’re also game developers at heart, and to be devoting ourselves to a VR game this ambitious is just as exciting.”

He added that Half-Life arriving on VR is “the culmination of a lot [of] things we care a lot about: truly great games, cutting edge technology, and open platforms. We can’t wait for people to experience this.”

Half-Life: Alyx is now available to pre-order for $60 (US). Those who own Valve’s Index VR headset will receive the game for free. Beyond March 2020, it does not have a more specific release date.

The last Half-Life game to be released was 2007’s Half-Life 2: Episode 2, which ended on a cliffhanger. Rumors of a third episode–sometimes also thought to be Half-Life 3–have popped up numerous times over the years. As of yet, however, a continuation of the Half-Life story hasn’t happened.

Valve’s Index, meanwhile, was released in June 2019. Among it’s more noteworthy features are individual finger tracking, pressure-sensitive gripping, and enhanced display technology. As part of our hands-on with the Valve Index, GameSpot’s Michael Higham said “it’s easy to see how Index can push VR gaming forward. However, like all enthusiastic-level platforms, it comes at a significant cost.”

Nintendo Switch Black Friday 2019 Deals: Discounts On Consoles And Accessories

Hot off some strong first-party releases and a new hardware iteration, Black Friday 2019 looks to be another major sales time for the Nintendo Switch. The portable/console hybrid has seen some pretty great games this year, including Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Astral Chain, Luigi’s Mansion 3, and Pokemon Sword and Shield, and the new Switch Lite has re-ignited sales of the console (tempting even current owners to pick up a second one). Whether you’re looking for a deal on a Switch console or just hunting around for some Switch accessory deals, we’ve got you covered. We’ve rounded out the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals right here, with more info to come as stores announce all of their deals for the season.

Let’s break the disappointing news right out of the gate. Judging by the Black Friday ads we’ve seen so far, the Nintendo Switch won’t be getting a nice discount or even a particularly amazing bundle this holiday season. Instead, Nintendo has provided retailers with the same Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Switch bundle from last Black Friday. And yes, it still includes the launch model Switch, not the updated Switch with better battery life that hit stores a few months back. While the Switch Lite is prominently featured in ads, so far it’s just that: an ad for the $200 handheld-only Switch, with no discount to speak of.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be great deals on Switch accessories, though. In fact, we’ve already seen countless accessories featured in the various Black Friday ads that Best Buy, Target, and Walmart have dropped, you can expect even more accessory deals as retailers like Amazon and GameStop release their Black Friday ads.

Best Black Friday Nintendo Switch console deals

Nintendo Switch with free digital copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and screen protector | $300

This Switch bundle was offered in 2018, and on the surface, it’s a pretty good deal. You get the Switch and an awesome game that regularly goes for around $50 these days. However, please note this isn’t the updated Switch with better battery life; it’s the launch model. If you love Mario Kart and aren’t concerned about the longer battery life, this is a solid offer; otherwise, you may be better off just buying the newer model for the same price and waiting for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to go on sale. We’re highlighting Best Buy’s bundle here because the retailer is throwing in a screen protector, but expect this bundle to be available at most major retailers as it’s an official Nintendo offer. Perhaps one smart retailer will throw in more than just a screen protector.

Nintendo Switch (new model) with carrying case and charging dock with $90 Kohl’s Cash | $320 ($345)

If you’re not eager to grab Nintendo’s official bundle, we know Kohl’s will have its own bundle that does, in fact, feature the updated Switch with better battery life. For $320, you’ll get the Switch, a carrying case ($20 value), and the popular PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock ($25 value). The real draw here is that you’ll get $90 Kohl’s Cash to spend in the weeks following Black Friday.

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R) Neon Red/Blue or Gray | $53.60 ($80)

An extra pair of Joy-Con controllers normally sets you back $80, and even though you get “two” controllers, that’s still pricey. Thankfully, Switch Joy-Cons will be on sale for $53.60 at Amazon, besting Best Buy and Target’s $60 price during Black Friday. It seems you’ll be able to choose between neon red/blue or gray.

No Caption Provided

PowerA wired controllers | $15 ($25)

Like Joy-Cons, Switch Pro controllers are expensive, but there are some reasonable third-party options like PowerA’s lineup of wired controllers. Using the same layout as the Pro controller but with a slightly smaller form factor, PowerA’s wired controllers are pretty darn good and come in three awesome designs: Zelda, Mario, and a Pikachu-yellow Pokemon theme. All three will be discounted to $15 during Best Buy’s Black Friday sale.

No Caption Provided

PowerA Enhanced Wireless Nintendo Switch controllers | $29 ($45)

These PowerA Enhanced wireless Nintendo Switch controllers are good alternatives to Nintendo’s official Pro Controller. They don’t support features like HD Rumble or NFC Amiibo scanning, but they do have two buttons on the back that can be mapped to a face button. This lets you keep your thumbs on the sticks while you’re in the middle of the action.

No Caption Provided

Poke Ball Plus | $20 ($50)

While the Poke Ball Plus initially launched as an alternative controller for Pokemon: Let’s Go, it will also be compatible with Pokemon Sword and Shield, allowing you to “hold” one of your Pokemon and take it with you on the go (presumably to rack up experience points or earn extra items). However, it won’t function as a controller for Pokemon Sword and Shield the same way it did for Pokemon: Let’s Go. The Poke Ball Plus also comes with Mew, a mythical Pokemon that can be transferred into Pokemon: Let’s Go. The accessory is normally $50, but most major retailers will have it for $20 during Black Friday.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo Switch Elite Edition Starter Kit | $15 ($25)

If you’re buying a Nintendo Switch this holiday season, you should be in the market for a case, too. This starter kit comes with a carrying case, USB-C cable, silicone Joy-Con covers, and a microfiber cleaning cloth. It’ll be discounted to $15 at Best Buy.

No Caption Provided

Insignia Power Pack for Switch/Switch Lite | $12.50 ($25)

For those who like traveling with their Switch (and who doesn’t?), a car charger is a great accessory to have. This Insignia pack comes with a car charger, a USB-C cable, and an extra AC adapter. Having a second AC adapter is handy, as you won’t have to unplug your AC adapter from your dock every time you want to take your Switch on a trip.

Cyber Monday 2019: Deals, Dates, And More

The Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2019 weekend will once again be the biggest shopping period of the year, which means stores will be competing for the best deals to get you in their stores or websites. If you’ve got your eye on a new PS4, Turtle Beach headset, or other cool piece of tech, this will likely be your best chance of getting it for cheap for a good while. Even if you’re planning to wait until Cyber Monday to do your shopping, it’s still important to have a plan and know what to expect. While you may not see the other shoppers grabbing things off shelves and tossing them in their carts, know that the best deals will still sell out quickly online. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for Cyber Monday 2019.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is basically an extension of Black Friday, except you’re sitting at a desk pretending to work while browsing deals instead of physically shoving your way through crowded stores (although many Black Friday deals are, thankfully, available online as well). The online shopping holiday is relatively new, dating back only to 2005, and it was created to encourage people to shop online and to compete with brick-and-mortar stores’ sales on Black Friday.

The online-only deals may not be as good as the doorbuster sales on Black Friday, but since those brick-and-mortar deals tend to have low stock and long lines, you really can’t beat the ease and convenience of shopping on Cyber Monday (and online shopping in general).

When is Cyber Monday 2019?

Cyber Monday is always the Monday after Thanksgiving, and this year, that falls on December 2. Because of Black Friday, many sales will run that entire weekend and even into the following week, but certain deals will become available only on that Monday.

Best Cyber Monday 2019 deals to expect

Many retailers have released their Black Friday 2019 ads, giving us an overview of the best deals that’ll be available Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, those ads tend to focus on the weeks leading up to and during Black Friday rather than Cyber Monday. In our experience, we won’t learn about the best Cyber Monday deals until days before it happens.

Cyber Monday deals will be similar to what we see during Black Friday, and you can check out our full Black Friday 2019 guide for more information on those deals. That said, we don’t recommend waiting until Cyber Monday if you see a good deal on Black Friday; it’s highly unlikely any Cyber Monday deals will top those we see on that Friday. It’s more likely that some of the best Black Friday deals will be restocked for Cyber Monday.

Some of Cyber Monday’s best deals will include the PS4 Slim holiday bundle with God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition, and The Last of Us Remastered for $200. We expect this bundle will sell out fast, but it may see a restock on Cyber Monday. Nintendo’s officially holiday bundle, the Nintendo Switch (old model) with a digital copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for $300, kicks off on November 28 and will likely be available until Cyber Monday. Otherwise, it’s hard to say exactly which deals may continue into Cyber Monday. The new wave of deals for Cyber Week will probably be announced right after Black Friday, and we’ll be ready to update this story with all the best deals when they’re available.

How to get the best Cyber Monday deals

The same way you get the best Black Friday deals: by paying attention to what retailers announce the weekend before Cyber Monday and having a plan for what products you want. You can also use CamelCamelCamel to check the price history on products at Amazon and browser extension Honey to find coupons from across the web. Browser add-on PriceBlink will also let you know if a specific product is cheaper elsewhere.

Of course, you’ll want to stay tuned to GameSpot, as we’ll be covering all the best deals for Cyber Monday 2019 once they’re announced. And remember: If you spot a good deal, hop on it fast, as the hottest products will sell out in the blink of an eye. For the most up-to-date information, be sure to follow GameSpot Deals on Twitter–we’ll keep you posted on the best deals in gaming and entertainment as we spot them. Plus, see our sister sites for more Cyber Monday tech deals, Cyber Monday kitchen deals, and Cyber Monday fashion and beauty deals.

Grab This Free PC Game For A Limited Time

The latest freebie from Epic Games is the real-time strategy title Bad North. The Raw Fury-published tactics game is free to download on the Epic Games Store until November 29.

Bad North is an RTS that combines action and rogue-lite elements wrapped in a Viking setting. The game’s goal is to defend against a Viking army while helping the islanders evacuate. The Jotunn Edition, which is being offered for free by the Epic Games Store, adds a bevy of new content, including four new items, selectable hero traits, rebalanced abilities, and more.

While Bad North has just been added to the Epic Games Store’s free games vault, the game made its way to Xbox Game Pass this September, alongside Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Dirt Rally 2.0, and others.

November saw a smorgasbord of indie games offered through the Epic Games Store. At the start of the month, the company put Nuclear Throne and Ruiner up for grabs until November 14. Following that, the Metroid-inspired The Messenger was available to download until November 21. Bad North is the company’s latest free game, which will be replaced by Rayman Legends come the end of the month.

Pokemon Sword And Shield Had A Record-Breaking Opening Weekend

We recently saw Pokemon Sword and Shield had a striking debut in Japan, but now Nintendo has released worldwide numbers, and they’re big. Fat Pikachu big. In fact, the latest from Game Freak has broken a franchise record, and very likely rocketed to a spot among the top-selling Switch games.

According to Nintendo, the game has sold 6 million units worldwide during the launch weekend alone. Nintendo notes this figure is reported sell-through to consumers. Sword and Shield also sold 2 million copies in the first two days in the United States, which makes it the highest-grossing Pokemon launch.

Given the current figures on the Nintendo Switch sales charts, that debut of 6 million already makes Pokemon Sword and Shield the #8 spot in all-time sales. That presumes the others below it–New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening–remain in their current positions. But given that this is just first-weekend sales for Pokemon we can expect its numbers to grow throughout the holiday season as well. The next Nintendo earnings report will refresh the sales charts early next year, factoring in software sales through the end of the year.

It’s not surprising to see Pokemon rise quickly through the charts, however. The all-time 3DS sales charts show Pokemon games composing three of the top five spots. Those are occupied by Pokemon X/Y, Sun/Moon, and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, respectively.

“In collecting, battling, and exploring, Sword and Shield cut out the bloat and focus on what makes these pillars of the Pokemon games so captivating in the first place,” Kallie Plagge wrote in GameSpot’s review. “You’re not held back by overly complicated back-end systems or hoops to jump through; from the outset, you can start wandering the Galar region, seeing its new Pokemon, and trying out its new battle strategies with very little in your way. This leaves you free to enjoy what Pokemon is all about, and that makes for an incredibly strong showing for the series’ proper debut on Switch.”

The Best Gaming Laptops (We’ve Tried So Far)

Not everyone can commit their entire desk area to a dedicated gaming PC setup, but for those who still want to drink deep at the well of PC games, it no longer feels like a dramatic compromise to go the route of the gaming laptop. For a long time, mobile GPUs struggled to keep up, and laptop heat would melt a desk if someone played a high-powered game for too long (at least, that’s what it felt like). Now, the balance is all upside with minimal compromise for most models in the market.

One common victory is that the “best fit” resolutions for a good laptop experience very much suit the current state of graphics processing power. While large desktop monitors are reaching for 4K resolutions and beyond for lovers of the cutting edge, most laptops don’t push past 1920×1080 (or 1080p) as a resolution, as the gains diminish pretty quickly on sub-20-inch screens. GPUs that fit inside a laptop have caught up to this pixel scale nicely and, in most cases, do a comfortable job of delivering 50+ frames per second at very high settings in all but the most demanding games. A number of laptop models also add the ability to boost GPU power using external devices so you’re not locked into what’s inside the case and can future-proof yourself to some extent.

However, there are some areas where the compromises remain: Speakers can struggle to give an impressive sound, and fans can make a lot of noise as they keep the air moving through the limited space inside a laptop chassis. If you’re gaming with a headset, both of these issues can be ignored pretty comfortably, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Gaming laptops have also gotten a lot thinner in the past three years. Some are still pretty chunky, especially the big 17-inch units, but compared to even just a few years ago, most of our picks have real potential to be nice, daily-use laptops that can also deliver a great gaming experience.

We’ve played around with a lot of different models from a variety of manufacturers, and in this guide, you’ll find our personal recommendations for the best gaming laptops currently available. We focussed on the pros and cons of form factor, any unique traits, and used the benchmarking tool found in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey to help us compare the graphical performance of the models we tested–these benchmark numbers give us a rough indication of the average frames-per-second performance on the unit.

Quick look: Best Gaming Laptops 2019

Best gaming laptop for portability

Razer Blade Stealth

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3

The GoodThe Bad
As thin and light as any nice ‘daily grind’ laptop out thereNot a dazzling game performer when away from an eGPU
Build quality feels rock solidVery limited storage options

The Razer Blade Stealth is a sleek, well-built hunk of black aluminum that feels like Apple said “yes” to making an ultra-slim laptop for gamers. But even though the logo on the back and those green-trimmed USB ports send out the signal that this is very much from the house of Razer, it’s still a nice, minimalist piece of hardware that doesn’t scream “gaming laptop” like a lot of others.

The Stealth is a pleasure to type on and use as an everyday piece of working hardware, if a little cramped for larger hands. Its size means that one of its major shortcomings is the deeply limited 256GB storage that can only be upgraded to 512GB by ordering the absolute top-of-the-line model. With today’s comparatively large game install sizes, expect to only ever have a few games installed at a time on here.

With its portable-friendly design, it’s not surprising that this machine delivers the worst gaming performance of all units tested. The entry-level Stealth only gets built-in graphics and a 1080p screen, while a maxed-out version can have a 4K touchscreen and a GTX 1650 Max-Q GPU. We found it could only run demanding games on low settings and was happiest by reducing resolution down to 720p.

That being said, if convenience is your biggest priority and you can handle playing games at lower settings while on the go, then the Stealth is a fine choice.

Where the Stealth is at its best, however, is when it’s attached to an external GPU when you get back to your desk at home. And what’s this? Razer has an ideal companion for it in the Razer Core X Chroma–although its $399 USD / $649 AUD RRP price tag, as well as the cost of a desktop graphics card on top of that, is a hefty investment in itself. However, most Thunderbolt 3 eGPU hubs will provide the same functionality, let you combine the Stealth with a desktop-sized graphics card, external monitor, and other peripherals in order to let the Stealth act as a much more powerful desktop while at home.

In our testing, the gaming performance while on the Core X Choma wasn’t as good as we would have hoped. There’s some bottleneck in the system that means a desktop RTX 2080 Ti card still performed worse than some of the other laptops here. Core X forums suggest there are ways to really dive in and tinker with settings to improve eGPU performance, but don’t expect to get the best from a top of the line card right out of the box.

Still, there’s something really pleasing about a sleek, 13-inch ultra-portable laptop that also happens to deliver plenty of value if you want to play games. And if you decide to invest in an eGPU unit for home, you can very easily get the best of both worlds.

Best designed gaming laptop

Alienware m15

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5

The GoodThe Bad
The chassis and keyboard tray feel really nice under the handsTrackpad feels small for general purpose usage
Tobii eye tracking built in

Premium build means premium price

The latest design on Alienware’s m15 feels truly first class. Honeycomb patterns are a big feature, and along with looking great, they allegedly offer improved chassis strength and airflow capacity. The black-white styling is also a striking look and the finish of the body feels great under the hands. The overall m15 package is something that feels incredibly well-constructed for use as both a general-purpose laptop and a gaming rig.

A significant inclusion it boasts is Tobii eye-tracking tech. At its most basic functionality, it can dim the screen when you look away and brighten when you return, saving precious battery when you’re using it away from power. But, it’s also got great potential for gaming, allowing eye movements to be used as an input option in games for things like camera movement. Tobii eye-tracking supports games like Elite Dangerous, ARMA III, The Division 2, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, and most importantly, Euro Truck Simulator 2.

In practice, setting up Tobii seemed a bit fussy, failing in a number of attempts to get it setup during our testing time. It worked out of the box for screen dimming and wake up features, and even then it sometimes dimmed during a benchmark test even though we were sitting right there in front of the screen. But the promise of Tobii seems solid for those who have the time to tinker and get it working.

For future proofing purposes, Alienware also includes the dedicated connector port for its proprietary eGPU unit so you can give the machine a boost while at a desk should that end up feeling necessary.

In our testing, this system performed very nicely, with its 240Hz screen delivering silky smooth gaming performance that didn’t suffer tearing or jitter. Along with the Asus Strix (below), these 240Hz screens really showed themselves to sometimes be a better feature than getting a laptop with a better graphics card and a 60Hz screen.

It’s hard to fault what Alienware is delivering here. There’s no real problems to note, though the touchpad feels a little too small for regular use in day-to-day tasks. However, the speakers sound great, the keyboard feels really nice to use, and if the already nice screen isn’t enough as it is, you can now opt for an out-of-this world OLED model too. The only caveat–you just need to set your wallet to be stunned, too.

Most powerful gaming laptop

Alienware Area51m

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3

The GoodThe Bad
Its performance is overwhelmingThe dual power cable design is really annoying
Nice, subtle design despite gigantic form factor60Hz screen reduces system overall quality
Large, heavy, and cumbersome–don’t expect to carry this far on a regular basis

The Area51m is the biggest, beastiest machine on the list. It almost feels like a lie to use the phrase ‘laptop’ to refer to it. Measuring 16×12.5 inches and weighing 8.5 pounds, it feels like more of a desktop you can pack up when required compared to the other options on the list–toss this in a giant shoulder bag and you’re likely to throw your back out carrying it around town.

One annoying surprise is the inclusion of a double power supply. On first unpack, it seemed like there had been a mistake when I saw the 180W brick (the m15 has a 240W) until I realised that it uses two of them to operate. That means two power ports, two power cables, and two power bricks. It’s a mess of cables before you even add an external mouse or headset. For all that fuss though, this is a crazily powerful gaming rig, and it ran everything we threw at it smoothly and without any issues.

The 17-inch monolith isn’t trying to be slim or svelte, but does have a few curves that seemingly are to assist airflow, while also giving it a touch of style. The lighting design is subtle, but pops in the places its been added, including a striking multi-zone light ring around the rear air vents.

Gameplay raw performance is the best we’ve seen in any laptop tested, with a beefy CPU and GPU delivering the goods. It also has a very bright screen doing a better job than many of revealing detail in darker areas, but the screen does get more screen tear during fast rotations. We tested the 60Hz model, so we’d really want to buy it with the 144Hz upgrade option.

Its size can be somewhat uncomfortable at times, however–your hand positioning can feel a little awkward as the thick chassis forces you to raise your wrist. But if you’re after overwhelming power and your circumstances don’t allow you to invest in a desktop PC, the Area51m is exactly what you’d be hoping for.

240Hz / 3ms screen is gorgeous

Performance is solid, but one simple feature that makes it really stand out is the dedicated strip of control buttons, instead of having shared function keys. Controls for volume and microphone muting are here. as well as a launch button for the ROG controller software. Plus, there’s toggle for instantly shifting the processor configuration between silent, performance and turbo modes instead of relying on a software solution.

Details like the spacebar having a wider left side speak to gamers having been at the heart of the thinking behind the design. This keyboard gives the most comfortable WASD hand positioning for reaching important keys nearby like Shift and Space.

The USB ‘Keystone’ is this laptop’s most unique feature, however–it’s an NFC device that adds a physical security component to the laptop, as well as giving you a built-in memory device for quickly sharing data. When removed from the laptop, a defined section of the main system storage is locked down and disappears from view. It’s great for the security-minded, but it’s easy to see where things can go wrong here.

Strangely, there is no webcam built in–something that seems standard in just about every laptop out there–but if you’re somebody that takes their security very seriously, this omission on top of the Keystone feature is definitely a plus.

Gameplay performance felt first-rate, with another 240Hz screen proving itself to be a big win for smooth images on screen even in fast-paced moments. Having used one of these now, I don’t want to have to go back to a gaming laptop that has a slower screen.

Best gaming laptop for comfortability

Lenovo Y740

The GoodThe Bad
Great keyboard for extensive typingTrackpad feels ancient
Powerful speakers

Lenovo’s Legion brand keeps pushing forward to catch up to its gaming laptop rivals, and this 17.3-inch system hits an interesting balance between Lenovo’s traditional business prowess and being a great gaming-focused machine.

Lenovo has always been one of the best keyboard designers for business laptop users, with large keycaps that curve nicely under the finger. You get that same style here and it’s a pleasure to use, though I can imagine some people might not take to the bigger keys if you’re too accustomed to other setups.

The flip side, however, is a lackluster trackpad experience, with two physical buttons where most modern designs extend the trackpad surface all the way to the bottom edge. That said, the power of the speakers here really stood out amongst the rest of our favorites. Not that they sounded the sweetest, but they definitely had serious punch when you wanted to turn things up.

Game performance was not far behind the Area51m in terms of raw power, but combined with a 144Hz display with G-Sync built-in, the screen delivered jitter-free renders and fast movement. It did feel a little ‘muddy’ at times, though, not always as sharp as we’d like.

The laptop’s design feels bland, which might turn you off if being flashy is what matters. But it’s great if you just want a great gaming laptop that’s comfortable to use while also not trying to make a big deal about its gaming credentials.

Best gaming laptop for value / full keyboard

Acer Helios 300

No Caption ProvidedGallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4Gallery image 5Gallery image 6

The GoodThe Bad
Keyboard design fits numpadAwkward power cable positioning
Efficient management softwareSounds like a jet engine
Build quality feels a bit lacking

The Helios 300 is a prime example of what Acer is doing right with its Predator range. It feels a little less tricked out than the likes of the Asus Strix. The keyboard feels a bit rubbery–whether that’s the keycaps or the actuators, there’s something a little soft about the experience under the fingers.

The biggest feature is the Helios’ inclusion of a number pad built in on a 15” laptop. This is a matter of taste, of course–it’s a big space and positioning trade-off just to have everything, and most models neglect the numpad to deliver a core tenkeyless design. But, if you like numpads, the Helios feels like it has gotten the scale just right–its inclusion never feels like a compromise in practice.

There are also a few dedicated gaming keys squeezed around the keyboard, including one to launch the PredatorSense management software–and this software is kept quite simple so it’s easy to quickly do exactly what you want–lighting customisation, overlocking, etc–with minimal fuss.

The trackpad is probably the worst of the range. It’s a full pad–no separate buttons–but the travel on the button press at the bottom of the pad feels way too deep and very inaccurate. But with a gaming mouse involved, are you going to use it that often anyway?

Pure performance was really impressive too, with great test numbers and a good feeling overall. There is some muddiness in dark areas of games, however, and some tearing in fast-moving renders and screen rotations.

There are few complaints here at all if you want great performance on a tight budget. If you hit the dedicated ‘Turbo’ button, get ready to hear the fans do a fantastic impersonation of a jet engine, but for the most part, the system does a good job of keeping itself performing well without needing to spin up the fans all the way.

The power cable’s strange positioning in the middle of the side seems standard for Predator laptops, presumably as part of its airflow design, but it’s a little awkward and seems like it could fit so much better elsewhere. But if that’s the only tradeoff for this impressive system to do what it does well, then it’s not quite a dealbreaker.

Forza And Toyota–The Iconic Manufacturer Is Returning To Xbox’s Racing Giant

Forza Horizon 4 has an enormous car list, but one major manufacturer is underrepresented on it. Toyota, the world’s largest car manufacturer, has limited licensing agreements on most of its models. Toyota has been unclear on why this is the case, beyond previously intimating in a since-deleted tweet that games like Need for Speed promote illegal street racing. While Toyota is prevalent in Gran Turismo Sport, they were scarce in Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 4. Toyota has three vehicles in Horizon 4 as of right now, none of them street racers–at present the game contains two models of Land Cruiser Arctic Trucks, the AT37 and AT38, and the #1 T100 Baja Truck.

But now, it seems, something has changed, and as of December 12 Forza will feature a proper Toyota street racing car. The 1998 Toyota Supra RZ is coming as part of the Series 17 update, which is exciting for car enthusiasts. There’s no mention of how much the car will cost in-game, or whether it will be released as paid DLC. Hopefully other models will follow.

This is, according to a recent Forza Horizon 4 developer livestream (viewed and described by Full Throttle Media), part of a new agreement with Toyota that will bring the manufacturer’s cars to the series “for years to come.” This includes the return of Lexus model cars to the series as well, as Toyota is the brand’s parent company.

2019 marks the first year without a new Forza game since 2010, unless you count the spin-off free-to-play title Forza Street. Forza Horizon 4 continues to be supported with updates and seasonal content over a year after its release.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Features A Very Sweet Tribute To A Dev’s Late Father

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is out now, and Star Wars fans have plenty of reason to be excited about it. The new game has earned strong reviews, and is being regarded as the best Star Wars game in a long time. Now, as players dig into the game, it’s worth being on the lookout for Easter eggs–although you’d be hard pressed to find one sweeter than this.

Level designer Nicholas G. Cameron worked on the game at Respawn, and was responsible for designing a certain “iconic snowy planet.” Now, in a series of tweets, he has shared some details about one of the planet’s echoes, and what it really means. Echoes are little pieces of scattered lore that you can find throughout the game, which give you some insight into what has happened previously in the areas you’re exploring.

The echo in question pays tribute to Master Mar Ti Kam’Ron, and reads, “A memorial placed at a meditation site used by the venerable Jedi Master Mar Ti “Bucky” Kam’Ron. He returned here many times over the course of his life to reflect on his adventures and achievements.” As Cameron explains in the tweets below, this is a tribute to his late father, Martin Cameron, who passed away in early 2018. Martin worked on Star Wars games himself, with his name appearing in the credits for X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, which he served as an artist on.

The official Twitter account for Respawn Entertainment issued a touching reply as well.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is “canon” within the wider world of Star Wars, which technically makes Mar Ti Kam’Ron a character that officially exists within that world.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you’re not far in yet, be sure to check out our beginner’s tips, and if you haven’t picked the game up for yourself yet, look out for Black Friday deals that will net you a cheaper copy.
