Ghost Recon Breakpoint Is Deactivating Battle Rewards, But There’s An Upside

The developers of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint have released a December roadmap, and have made it clear that they recognize one element of the game that is fundamentally not working at the moment. The Battle Rewards system is being deactivated, with the beginning of Act 2 last week causing problems for many players. However, to make up for it, you’ll immediately get all the rewards from the first two Acts.

“In response to feedback, we are granting to all players every reward from Act 1 and Act 2 next week,” the post reads. “The Hill and Walker figures will not be mass-granted until we have resolved the issues with the items. We are also deactivating the Battle Rewards system until we have implemented solutions to prevent reported issues from reoccurring. Our team aims to have everything ready for the start of Act 3.”

Elsewhere in the roadmap, some details are provided about title update 1.1.0, which is due December 18. It will contain bug fixes and improvements, including better enemy AI, changes to the base jump mechanic, and the addition of night vision goggles. There’s also a Terminator Live Event being planned, which will see you facing off against the T-800–that’s coming between late December and mid-January.

Breakpoint recently added its first raid, as well as an update that introduced easier character customization, among other fixes. Ubisoft has promised that a “more radical and immersive” version of the game is being worked on.

The Game Awards 2019–Geoff Keighley Rejects “Conflict On Interest” Claims Over Death Stranding Cameo

In preparation for The Game Awards later this week, host Geoff Keighley has hosted a Reddit AMA about the show and what viewers can expect. While most questions were fairly straightforward, one prompted a longer response from Keighley: “do you feel that it’s a conflict of interest that you’re the producer of the event and in one of the games nominated for a good number of awards?”

This question is in reference to Death Stranding, the new game from Hideo Kojima’s studio, Kojima Productions. Keighley has discussed his friendship with Kojima on numerous occasions, and appears in Death Stranding as one of several celebrity cameos. In his response, Keighley promises that there is no conflict of interest to speak of, and gets into the specifics of the voting process.

“More than anything, the integrity of the show and the awards is the most important thing of all,” Keighley says. “I don’t vote on the nominees or winners–that’s done by a jury of 80 global media outlets that we list on the website. That process isn’t the result of me having a cameo in a game, but also because I work with developers on world premieres, announcements, sponsorships, and other aspects of the show. I want the jury to be ‘blind’ to all those other aspects.”

He notes that while he is friends with several people within the industry, there are others who also hold him personally responsible when their games don’t win. “If I’m being honest it can sometimes be pretty lonely trying to keep everyone happy,” he says. “But I just have to stay true to the rules and voting and hope that, if I want to build something that stands the test of time, I act as ethically and fairly as I can.”

Keighley notes that his appearance in Death Stranding was recorded in 2017, for a promotional piece that was not used, and Kojima later asked if the motion capture could be used in-game. He did not do the voice acting for his character–that was performed by Matt Mercer. “I certainly get the concern,” he concedes. “As producer of the show I’m inevitably going to have relationships with people in the industry. That’s what allows me to do the show in the first place. The producers of the Oscars, for instance, are often (or almost always) people who produce movies. I don’t make games, don’t invest in games or own game stock. All I can do is be transparent about those relationships and make sure the voting is separate.”

The Game Awards airs December 12 at 8:30 PM ET. You can still vote for your favorite games to win before the show.

Zelda Sequel Behind-The-Scenes Shots And Nintendo Concept Art Shown Off

Nintendo’s Japanese designer recruitment site has shared some interesting concept art and insight into how the trailer to the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel came together. The site, spotted by VGC, explains Nintendo’s expectations from designers and artists, showing off some of the work that has gone into their most popular recent games and characters. It’s not just valuable for potential designers, though, as the page also features some great concept art.

The page includes some concept art for Isabelle, the mayor’s assistant from Animal Crossing: New Leaf who proved so popular that she became a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It shows several iterations the character went through before her look was settled on. It says that they wanted a character who as many people as possible would grow attached to.

No Caption Provided

There are also various pieces of Splatoon 2 stage and character design throughout the page, showing off the different models and the colorful designs of the game’s levels. There’s no major revelations here, but it’s interesting how the stage art captures the general vibe of the game well.

Gallery image 1Gallery image 2Gallery image 3Gallery image 4

Much of the page is focused on the work that went into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, including the reveal of the game’s sequel. The first image below shows how a mix of motion capture and Maya software was used to map Link’s movements in the trailer, which is embedded above. It’s a small but welcome insight into the process involved. The other images from the original Breath of the Wild below are a mix of storyboards for the game’s iconic opening scene of Link running to the clifftop and environmental design examples.

The Breath of the Wild sequel is happening because Nintendo had too many ideas for DLC. A release date has not been announced, but it will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch.

The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Tactics–Release Date Announced In New Trailer

The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Tactics was first announced during Nintendo’s 2019 E3 Direct, and now it finally has a release date. The turn-based strategy spin-off from the recent Netflix TV series (itself a sequel to the 1982 film) will release for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 4, 2020.

This news comes via the game’s official Twitter account, which also debuted a new short trailer for the game. The trailer can also be watched on YouTube.

According to the game’s Steam page, it will feature over 50 battles and 15 playable characters, which will be a mix of characters from the original film and some from the more recent series. You’ll be able to equip your characters with gear and the game will feature changing, dynamic environments that can help or hinder your strategies.

The Netflix series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, received a 9/10 in our review. Reviewer Chris E. Hayner said that the show “should hook you in with its fantastical storytelling and incredible world.”

Twin Peaks VR Trailer–Escape The Black Lodge And Explore The Town Later This Month

Twin Peaks VR is due to release this month, but until now we hadn’t seen any footage from it. Now a trailer has emerged, showing off the Twin Peaks iconography and scenes from the series that fans will soon be able to explore in virtual reality. This is essentially an “escape room” game that will require you to puzzle your way through several situations from the show. The game appears to be heavily based on the enigmatic and wonderful 2017 third series rather than the first two seasons, and anyone who hasn’t watched it should be wary of spoilers in the trailer below.

The trailer begins in Glastonbury Grove, by the pool where Cooper enters the Red Room at the end of the second season, and gets weird from there. The trailer shows off the Red Room, complete with the chairs and statue, as well as Dougie Jones’ waiting body. We also see the white horse from the original series and the Evolution of the Arm, and it seems like you’ll be able to get uncomfortably close and personal with it.

It also looks like the game will take you to the Fireman’s theater room from episode 8 of the third season, as well as the sheriff’s department, the box room in New York, and the traincart where Laura Palmer was murdered. The trailer promises that you can find Easter eggs, including posters of Bob and Laura’s necklace in the woods,

There are several moments from the trailer that match up exactly with the new series, including Naido being flung off into inter-dimensional space in the third episode and the Bob ball from the penultimate episode. It seems likely that the game will not fit within the canon of the Twin Peaks universe, and will instead be a way for fans to explore particular moments from the series.

The game releases on Steam and the Oculus store this month, and according to Welcome to Twin Peaks, Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR versions will follow. Twin Peaks VR comes from Collider Games, in collaboration with Showtime and series director David Lynch.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends–Bethesda Is No Longer Developing New Content

The Elder Scrolls: Legends is winding down, with Bethesda announcing that the game will no longer receive new content. In a post on the game’s Reddit, Bethesda said that the additional content pack scheduled for 2019 will not release, and that development on all content going forward has ceased.

This is not the end for The Elder Scrolls: Legends–it’s still available to download and play, and the post promises continued support in the form of “monthly reward cards and regular in-game events.” Ongoing maintenance is promised too, but don’t expect new expansions. The most recent released expansion, Moons of Elsweyr, launched in June this year.

All players who log in from now will receive a free card pack, The Tamriel Collection, which features “an assortment of new, three-attribute cards.” The post also promises that the Asia-specific version of Legends currently in development is not affected by this news. There’s no word on whether the planned Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch versions will ever release now, but it seems unlikely.

We didn’t review The Elder Scrolls: Legends, but it was generally well received, and the PC version has a score of 80 on Metacritic. Curiously, Bethesda has recently committed to releasing more mobile games like Legends. Their other major mobile titles as of right now are Fallout Shelter and The Elder Scrolls: Blades.

New Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Footage Will Debut Inside Fortnite Very Soon

New footage from the much-anticipated Star Wars movie The Rise of Skywalker will premiere inside of the battle royale game Fortnite later this month. Epic Games has announced that director JJ Abrams will showcase new footage of the sci-fi blockbuster at the in-game outdoor theatre Risky Reels on December 12. The footage will debut at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET that day.

As for what to expect, Disney is promising an “exclusive scene” from Rise of Skywalker, but there are no further details available at this time. Epic added that Risky Reels opens its doors at 10:30 AM PT / 1:30 PM ET, so players can head in early to get a good seat.

No Caption Provided

This confirmation comes after players discovered posters for the Rise of Skywalker reveal in Fortnite at various locations across the map. The new Rise of Skywalker footage will undoubtedly get posted to YouTube very quickly, so you don’t necessarily need to play Fortnite to check out the new movie content.

This is not the first partnership between Fortnite and Star Wars. In November, a massive Imperial starship appeared in the sky, and a Stormtrooper skin also came to the game.

Abrams is working with Epic Games on a new video game called Spyjinx. Epic has said very little about the project, but the company says it is still in the works.

Abrams also recently signed a $250 million deal to make new video games, TV shows, and movies for Warner Bros.

Watch Loadout Episode 1: Why Is The Revolver So Iconic?

Whether it’s video games, movies, or TV shows, entertainment is filled with iconic tools of warfare, and much of the stories we love are defined by them; the Pulse Rifle is synonymous with the Aliens franchise; the Man With No Name’s mystique and effortless cool is heightened by the revolver he whips out in the squint of an eye; and the sound of a bullet from the Intervention hitting an enemy immediately conjures up Call of Duty-flavoured nostalgia.

These weapons are the focus of Loadout, a new show that will identify some of pop culture’s most influential armaments and explore them in-depth. Each week, host Dave Jewitt will tackle a different weapon, delve into its origins, examine how it has been used, and lay out the impact it has had on pop culture.

In Episode 1, Loadout takes hold of the revolver, a legendary weapon that has been present from the earliest days of cinema to the current era of video games. Why is it so popular? Watch Episode 1 of Loadout to find out. New episodes will air every Saturday and you can find them on GameSpot’s YouTube channel–make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode.

2019: The Year Of 2020

A whole lot happened in 2019. The year saw some major games finally come to fruition, like the long-awaited Death Stranding from Kojima Productions, as well as some forward motion in new services like Xbox Game Pass and Google Stadia. But looming over most of 2019 was something even larger: 2020. This year was full of forward-looking developments in gaming, setting up a year that has the potential to be littered with major moments and sweeping changes to the industry’s landscape.

Of course, there are major games on the horizon, like The Last Of Us Part II or Cyberpunk 2077. More than that, though, are the moves developers, publishers, and major tech companies are making that could recontextualize the entire industry. New hardware is set to bring another technical leap forward in the console games we play. Major players are getting in on streaming and subscription services. Long-dormant franchises could see resurgences. And more and more companies are looking at new business models for their games–and trying to save games they’ve already released from rocky starts.

We got our first look at what 2020 holds throughout 2019, and there’s a lot that could bring major changes to the gaming industry in the very near future. Here’s a rundown of everything that turned 2019 into the Year of 2020.

Next-Gen Consoles Are Coming

Nothing has quite an impact on the gaming landscape as new console hardware, and in 2019, we started getting details about what Sony and Microsoft have planned for the next console generation. Both the PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox, codenamed “Project Scarlett,” are slated for release in 2020 during the holiday season, which means the current console generation is quickly coming to an end. And that means we’ll soon start to see a crop of games that show off the capabilities of the new hardware.

Both consoles will feature solid-state drives for storage, as opposed to the current hard disk standard, although neither has a price point yet. The PS5 is confirmed to include a disc drive and to support 4K Blu-ray discs, while reports on Microsoft’s new Xbox suggest it has two versions, one of which may focus on streaming and forego a disc drive altogether, like the Xbox One S All-Digital. The PS5 is also confirmed to support backward compatibility with PS4 games and PlayStation VR. Scarlett looks slated for release during the 2020 holiday season, while the PS5 is confirmed to hit shelves in Holiday 2020.

We’re sure to get more information about the future of PS5 and Project Scarlett throughout 2020, as well as some of the games that’ll show up on them. The big question is what the new hardware will allow developers to do with their games that they couldn’t before–something we’re sure to see in the coming months.

The Year Of Streaming And Subscriptions

Apart from new Xbox hardware, Microsoft is making another big move in gaming in the form of its xCloud streaming technology. The service looks to make console-quality games playable on a variety of hardware, including on on PCs and Macs through their internet browsers and mobile devices, through online streaming. Given the robust library of Microsoft’s Game Pass offerings, which make all first-party games and a variety of other titles available to subscribers on Xbox One and PC for a monthly fee, xCloud could be a formidable entrant into the widening field of streaming services–especially since Microsoft is packaging it with Xbox Game Pass in 2020.

No Caption Provided

Google also recently launched its Stadia streaming service, which offers a lot of the same capabilities as what Microsoft is bringing with xCloud. While the service launched in 2019, Stadia saw something of a rocky launch, with a small library of games and a thin install base that made multiplayer games tough to enjoy. But while it might have struggled at launch, Google has invested in Stadia with a new studio headed up by Motive Studios and Ubisoft Toronto founder Jade Raymond. It seems likely we’ll see Google continue to push Stadia’s offerings and shore up its capabilities.

With Microsoft mounting a streaming service and a heavy hitter like Google now on the gaming stage, it seems likely we’ll see an uptick of emphasis on streaming from other players as well. Sony’s PS Now service has existed for quite a while, though the publisher doesn’t release first-party games on the service at launch. Sony recently dropped its price in a move that seems aimed to keep it competitive with Microsoft and Google’s offerings. Ubisoft also recently announced a PC subscription service for its game catalog, called Uplay Plus, and there’s Electronic Arts’ Access subscriptions–EA Access on console and Origin Access on PC. We’ve also got the newly launched Apple Arcade service, a subscription for mobile games that works on iPhones, Macs, and Apple TV, and services such as Nvidia’s GeForce Now, which lets you stream PC games you’ve purchased on various devices, including PCs, Macs, and Nvidia Shield.

Though the new consoles’ support for disc drives suggests we won’t see the elimination of physical media in the next generation, 2020 looks to be a year in which many of us will have the option to get our games primarily through subscriptions, rather than buying discs or even digital purchases.

At Long Last: More Half-Life

Possibly the least-expected announcement of 2019 came from Valve: 2020 will see a new entry in the beloved Half-Life franchise. It also wasn’t the game anyone expected. Valve isn’t bringing a traditional Half-Life game to PC, in which you play as series protagonist Gordon Freeman. Instead, the next title will be Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality game that puts you in the shoes of Half-Life 2 character Alyx Vance.

No Caption Provided

Valve’s also not advancing the story beyond where it left it with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 way back in 2007. Instead, Half-Life: Alyx takes place between the first two Half-Life games and looks like it’ll focus on Alyx’s relationship with her father, Eli Vance. Half-Life: Alyx will work with any VR platform that’s compatible with SteamVR–meaning HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Windows Mixed Media, and Valve’s VR setup, Valve Index.

There’s not a ton of other information about the game just yet apart from Valve’s announcement trailer. But if you’ve got VR equipment, we do know when you can play it: March 2020.

Blizzard’s Resurgence

BlizzCon 2019 was a huge one for the developer, full of announcements. Three of its franchises are seeing major continuations in the future (to say nothing of new content coming to Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm), and while we’re not sure if they’ll all come out in 2020, it’s very possible we’ll see some new Blizzard games in the coming year.

After seven years since the release of Diablo 3, Blizzard dropped the bomb of Diablo 4 at the convention, showing off not just a new trailer for the game but a playable slice of the game. It makes some big changes to the franchise, taking some influences from live games. Instead of just playing cooperatively with other players in your party, Diablo 4’s overworld is public, throwing you in with other players to meet, work with, or ignore, and adding elements like world bosses and public events to take part in as you explore.

No Caption Provided

Blizzard also announced a sequel to its multiplayer hero shooter, Overwatch. Up to now, Overwatch has largely been a competitive multiplayer experience, with its broader story relegated to supplementary material like trailers and videos. Overwatch 2 will feature a story campaign and single-player activities, as well as cooperative missions–expanding on the story side of Overwatch and giving you new options to play. But the competitive part is still a huge part of the game, and Blizzard intends to avoid fracturing the current Overwatch community by making Overwatch and Overwatch 2 competitive gameplay compatible with each other. All new characters and maps will also be available in both games, so even if you choose not to buy Overwatch 2, you’ll still be able to keep playing the game as you know it.

The third of the big announcements is a new expansion for World of Warcraft. Shadowlands expands on Blizzard’s 15-year-old MMO by taking players into Azeroth’s afterlife, opening up a whole new area to explore, as well as expanding on lore that Blizzard has never really explored before. The expansion is also putting a big emphasis on player choice, allowing you to choose from a variety of factions to join in the Shadowlands, and providing specific endgame story campaigns based on your choices.

We don’t know when exactly Blizzard will release any of those titles–and with Blizzard, it might be a while. A big showing at BlizzCon was welcome for the company, which was facing still-lingering controversy over its ruling against a Hearthstone player who expressed support for the Hong Kong protests. But BlizzCon 2019 set up the possibility for continuations of Blizzard’s major franchises in 2020, and even if those games aren’t actually playable next year, they’re sure to be on a lot of minds.

More Long-Awaited Releases

While we haven’t been waiting for them as long as we have for a new Half-Life game, there are a few other well-loved franchises finally getting their sequels (and remakes) in 2020. Square Enix is releasing the first episode of its Final Fantasy VII Remake in March, bringing the game back to the fore after 22 years. The first part of the remake covers the portion of Final Fantasy VII that takes place in Midgar, but we’re still not sure how many episodes the game will span, how long it’ll be in total, or when it’ll all be released.

The Last of Us Part II is finally poised for release in 2020 as well. The second part of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic action-adventure game returns to the story of Joel and Ellie, but this time, Ellie is the player character throughout the game. Ellie has become a capable warrior in the years since The Last of Us, and she embarks on a revenge quest after a vicious attack on her friend and love interest Dina. We know she’ll also work with other characters, including Joel, and that the game will be as bleak and story-focused as its predecessor.

We’re also about to see the wait for CD Projekt Red’s follow-up to The Witcher franchise, Cyberpunk 2077, come to an end. CD Projekt revealed a bunch of new details about the upcoming action-RPG in 2019, including the addition of actor Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, a major character in the franchise. Cyberpunk 2077 looks to be about as expansive and detailed as The Witcher games, as players have come to expect, with plenty of options that let you alter your path through the game based on your choices, how you build your character, how you interact with the people you meet in the game, and how you approach its various combat encounters.

Microsoft is set to continue the Halo franchise in 2020 as well, with Halo: Infinite, just in time for the launch of Project Scarlett. The game puts you back in the role of series protagonist Master Chief, though we don’t know much else. The game is set for release on Xbox One and PC in Holiday 2020, while also serving as a launch title for Project Scarlett, with a beta coming before its launch that’ll likely give a pretty strong look at the new Halo’s multiplayer offerings.

Pokemon Go December 2019 Community Day Guide: Featured Pokemon, Start Times, And More

2019 may be winding down, but Pokemon Go developer Niantic is closing out the year with one final Community Day event. Just like last year, this month’s Community Day will actually be spread across two days–December 14 and 15–and will give players another chance to catch rare Pokemon, learn exclusive moves, and earn some extra bonuses.

There’s a lot happening during this month’s big Pokemon Go event, so to help get you prepared, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about December 2019’s Community Day weekend below, from what Pokemon you’ll be able to find again to all the different bonuses and special moves that will be available.

What Is December’s Featured Pokemon?

While each Pokemon Go Community Day typically stars only one “featured” Pokemon, this month’s event brings back every previous featured Pokemon, giving you another chance to catch them. Eggs will also hatch at half the distance they normally require during that window of time.
